We report pressure-dependent reflection and transmission measurements on ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$, HgCr$_2$S$_4$, and CdCr$_2$O$_4$ single crystals at room temperature over a broad spectral range 200-24000 cm$^{-1}$. The pressure dependence of the phonon modes and the high-frequency electronic excitations indicates that all three compounds undergo a pressure-induced structural phase transition with the critical pressure 15 GPa, 12 GPa, and 10 GPa for CdCr$_2$O$_4$, HgCr$_2$S$_4$, and ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$, respectively. The eigenfrequencies of the electronic transitions are very close to the expected values for chromium crystal-field transitions. In the case of the chalcogenides pressure induces a red shift of the electronic excitation which indicates a strong hybridization of the Cr d-bands with the chalcogenide bands.

We report detailed dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements on the frustrated magnet ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$. At low temperatures, with increasing magnetic field, this spinel material goes through a series of s pin state transitions from the helix spin state to the spiral spin state and then to the fully polarized state. Our results indicate a direct quantum phase transition from the spiral spin state to the fully polarized state. As the system approaches the quantum criticality, we find strong quantum fluctuations of the spins with the behaviors such as an unconventional $T^2$-dependent specific heat and temperature independent mean free path for the thermal transport. We complete the full phase diagram of ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ under the external magnetic field and propose the possibility of frustrated quantum criticality with extended densities of critical modes to account for the unusual low-energy excitations in the vicinity of the criticality. Our results reveal that ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ is a rare example of 3D magnet exhibiting a field-driven quantum criticality with unconventional properties.
An emerging phase of matter among the class of topological materials is nodal line semimetal, possessing symmetry-protected one-dimensional gapless lines at the (or close to) the Fermi level in $k$-space. When the $k$-dispersion of the nodal line is weak, van Hove singularities generated by the almost flat nodal lines may be prone to instabilities introduced by additional perturbations such as spin-orbit coupling or magnetism. Here, we study Cr-based ferromagnetic chalcospinel compound CuCr$_2$Se$_4$ (CCS) via first-principles electronic structure methods and reveal the true origin of its dissipationless anomalous Hall conductivity, which was not well understood previously. We find that CCS hosts nodal lines protected by nonsymmorphic symmetries, located in the vicinity of Fermi level, and that such nodal lines are the origin of the previously observed distinct behavior of the anomalous Hall signature in the presence of electron doping. The splitting of nodal line via spin-orbit coupling produces a large Berry curvature, which leads to a significant response in anomalous Hall conductivity. Upon electron doping via chemical substitution or gating, or rotation of magnetization via external magnetic field, steep change of anomalous Hall behavior occurs, which makes CCS a promising compound for low energy spintronics applications.
The nanoscale distribution of magnetic anisotropies was measured in core@shell MnFe$_2$O$_4$@CoFe$_2$O$_4$ 7.0 nm particles using a combination of element selective magnetic spectroscopies with different probing depths. As this picture is not accessi ble by any other technique, emergent magnetic properties were revealed. The coercive field is not constant in a whole nanospinel. The very thin (0.5 nm) CoFe$_2$O$_4$ hard shell imposes a strong magnetic anisotropy to the otherwise very soft MnFe$_2$O$_4$ core: a large gradient in coercivity was measured inside the MnFe$_2$O$_4$ core with lower values close to the interface region, while the inner core presents a substantial coercive field (0.54 T) and a very high remnant magnetization (90% of the magnetization at saturation).
The intrinsic magnetic topological insulators MnBi$_2$X$_4$ (X = Se, Te) are promising candidates in realizing various novel topological states related to symmetry breaking by magnetic order. Although much progress had been made in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, th e study of MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ has been lacking due to the difficulty of material synthesis of the desired trigonal phase. Here, we report the synthesis of multilayer trigonal MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ with alternating-layer molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) identify a well-ordered multilayer van der Waals (vdW) crystal with septuple-layer base units in agreement with the trigonal structure. Systematic thickness-dependent magnetometry studies illustrate the layered antiferromagnetic ordering as predicted by theory. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals the gapless Dirac-like surface state of MnBi$_2$Se$_4$, which demonstrates that MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ is a topological insulator above the magnetic ordering temperature. These systematic studies show that MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ is a promising candidate for exploring the rich topological phases of layered antiferromagnetic topological insulators.
The high-pressure synthesized quasi-one-dimensional compounds NaMn$_2$O$_4$ and Li$_{0.92}$Mn$_2$O$_4$ are both antiferromagnetic insulators, and here their atomic and magnetic structures were investigated using neutron powder diffraction. The presen t crystal structural analyses of NaMn2O4 reveal that Mn3+/Mn4+ charge-ordering state exist even at low temperature (down to 1.5 K). It is evident from one of the Mn sites shows a strongly distorted Mn3+ octahedra due to the Jahn-Teller effect. Above TN = 39 K, a two-dimensional short-range correlation is observed, as indicated by an asymmetric diffuse scattering. Below TN, two antiferromagnetic transitions are observed (i) a commensurate long-range Mn3+ spin ordering below 39 K, and (ii) an incommensurate Mn4+ spin ordering below 10 K. The commensurate magnetic structure (kC = 0.5, -0.5, 0.5) follows the magnetic anisotropy of the local easy axes of Mn3+, while the incommensurate one shows a spin-density-wave order with kIC = (0,0,0.216). For Li$_{0.92}$Mn$_2$O$_4$, on the other hand, absence of a long-range spin ordered state down to 1.5 K is confirmed.
