Before having exhausted the helium in its tank on April 8, 1998, the Infrared Space Observatory had time to perform several complementary surveys at various depths and areas within selected regions of the sky. We present the results of some of the surveys done with the mid-infrared camera, ISOCAM, on-board ISO, and more specifically those surveys which were performed using the broad-band filter LW3 (12-18 microns). We show that mid-infrared allows to discriminate starburst and post-starburst galaxies among galaxies which present similar optical-UV morphological and colour signatures. Furthermore, the strong evolution found in the surveys indicates that more star formation is hidden in the infrared at higher redshifts.

We present a census of the population of deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Perseus molecular cloud complex based on a combination of Spitzer Space Telescope mid-IR data from the c2d legacy team and JCMT/SCUBA submillimeter maps from the COMPLETE team. The mid-IR sources detected at 24 micron and having [3.6]-[4.5] > 1 are located close to the center of the SCUBA cores, typically within 15 of their peaks. The narrowness of the spatial distribution of mid-IR sources around the peaks of the SCUBA cores suggests that no significant dispersal of the newly formed YSOs has occurred. This argues against the suggestion that motions of protostars regulate the time scales over which significant (Bondi-Hoyle) accretion can occur. The most deeply embedded YSOs are found in regions with high extinction, AV > 5, similar to the extinction threshold observed for the SCUBA cores. All the SCUBA cores with high concentrations have embedded YSOs, but not all cores with low concentrations are starless. An unbiased sample of 49 deeply embedded YSOs is constructed. Embedded YSOs are found in 40 of the 72 SCUBA cores with only three cores harboring multiple embedded YSOs within 15. The equal number of SCUBA cores with and without embedded YSOs suggests that the time scale for the evolution through the dense prestellar stages, where the cores are recognized in the submillimeter maps and have central densities of 5e4-1e5 cm^{-3}, is similar to the time scale for the embedded protostellar stages. The current star formation efficiency of cores is estimated to be approximately 10-15%. In contrast, the star formation efficiency averaged over the cloud life time and compared to the total cloud mass is only a few percent, reflecting also the efficiency in assembling cloud material into the dense cores forming stars.
We present the results of the five mid-IR 15 microns (12-18 microns LW3 band) ISOCAM Guaranteed Time Extragalactic Surveys performed in the regions of the Lockman Hole and Marano Field. The roughly 1000 sources detected, 600 of which have a flux abov e the 80 % completeness limit, guarantee a very high statistical significance for the integral and differential source counts from 0.1 mJy up to 5 mJy. By adding the ISOCAM surveys of the HDF-North and South (plus flanking fields) and the lensing cluster A2390 at low fluxes and IRAS at high fluxes, we cover four decades in flux from 50 microJy to 0.3 Jy. The slope of the differential counts is very steep (alpha =-3.0) in the flux range 0.4-4 mJy, hence much above the Euclidean expectation of alpha =-2.5. When compared with no-evolution models based on IRAS, our counts show a factor of 10 excess at 400 microJy, and a fast convergence, with alpha =-1.6 at lower fluxes.

With the goal of investigating the degree to which the mid-infrared emission traces the star formation rate (SFR), we analyze Spitzer 8 um and 24 um data of star-forming regions in a sample of 33 nearby galaxies with available HST/NICMOS images in th e Paschen-alpha (1.8756 um) emission line. The galaxies are drawn from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) sample, and cover a range of morphologies and a factor ~10 in oxygen abundance. Published data on local low-metallicity starburst galaxies and Luminous Infrared Galaxies are also included in the analysis. Both the stellar-continuum-subtracted 8 um emission and the 24 um emission correlate with the extinction-corrected Pa-alpha line emission, although neither relationship is linear. Simple models of stellar populations and dust extinction and emission are able to reproduce the observed non-linear trend of the 24 um emission versus number of ionizing photons, including the modest deficiency of 24 um emission in the low metallicity regions, which results from a combination of decreasing dust opacity and dust temperature at low luminosities. Conversely, the trend of the 8 um emission as a function of the number of ionizing photons is not well reproduced by the same models. The 8 um emission is contributed, in larger measure than the 24 um emission, by dust heated by non-ionizing stellar populations, in agreement with previous findings. Two SFR calibrations, one using the 24 um emission and the other using a combination of the 24 um and H-alpha luminosities (Kennicutt et al. 2007), are presented. No calibration is presented for the 8 um emission, because of its significant dependence on both metallicity and environment. The calibrations presented here should be directly applicable to systems dominated by on-going star formation.
We present a multi-wavelength study to analyse the star formation process associated with the mid-infrared bubble CN 148 (H II region G10.3-0.1), which harbors an O5V-O6V star. The arc-shaped distribution of molecular CO(2-1) emission, the cold dust emission, and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon features trace a photodissociation region (PDR) around the H II region. We have identified 371 young stellar objects (YSOs) in the selected region and, interestingly, their spatial distribution correlates well with the PDR. 41% of these YSOs are present in 13 clusters, each having visual extinction larger than 16 mag. The clusters at the edges of the bubble (both northeast and southwest) are found to be relatively younger than the clusters located further away from the bubble. We also find that four 6.7 GHz methanol masers, two Extended Green Objects, an ultra-compact H II region, and a massive protostar candidate (as previously reported) are spatially positioned at the edges of the bubble. The existence of an apparent age gradient in YSO clusters and different early evolutionary stages of massive star formation around the bubble suggest their origin to be influenced by an H II region expanding into the surrounding interstellar medium. The data sets are suggestive of triggered star formation.
The results of a deep mid-IR ISOCAM survey of the L1551 dark molecular cloud are presented. The aim of this survey is a search for new YSO (Young Stellar Object) candidates, using two broad-band filters centred at 6.7 and 14.3 micron. Although two re gions close to the centre of L1551 had to be avoided due to saturation problems, 96 sources were detected in total (76 sources at 6.7 micron and 44 sources at 14.3 micron). Using the 24 sources detected in both filters, 14 were found to have intrinsic mid-IR excess at 14.3 micron and were therefore classified as YSO candidates. Using additional observations in B, V, I, J, H and K obtained from the ground, most candidates detected at these wavelengths were confirmed to have mid-IR excess at 6.7 micron as well, and three additional YSO candidates were found. Prior to this survey only three YSOs were known in the observed region (avoiding L1551 IRS5/NE and HL/XZ Tau). This survey reveals 15 new YSO candidates, although several of these are uncertain due to their extended nature either in the mid-IR or in the optical/near-IR observations. Two of the sources with mid-IR excess are previously known YSOs, one is a brown dwarf MHO 5 and the other is the well known T Tauri star HH30, consisting of an outflow and an optically thick disk seen edge on.
