Rotationally induced mixing with subsequent dredge-up of nucleosynthesized material is discussed as a second parameter of the horizontal branch morphology in globular clusters. CNO abundances have been proposed as tracers of the dredge up of processed material. gc is a prominent example of a second parameter GC: Its HB morphology is too red for its metallicity. We present spectroscopic measurements of CN molecular band strengths S(3839) and CH band CH(4300) strengths for 12 giants in gc to test rotationally-driven mixing as a second parameter in this cluster. Our observations reveal (i) a scatter in star-to-star CN absorption strengths with the same amplitude as seen in other GCs of the same metallicity, but different HB morphologies; (ii) a possible continuous distribution of CN absorption strength with a preference for CN-enriched stars, and (iii) a possible weak radial gradient in the number ratio of CN-strong and CN-weak stars. We argue against the hypothesis that CN-variations are directly correlated with the second parameter effect of the HB morphology. However, the small sample of stars measured in gc prevents us from drawing firm conclusions. Finally, we identify one star of our sample as a foreground dwarf carbon star.

We use both new and archival ALMA data of three energy lines each of CN and HCN to explore intensity ratios in dense gas in NGC 3256, NGC 7469, and IRAS 13120-5453. The HCN (3-2)/HCN (1-0) intensity ratio varies in NGC 3256 and NGC 7469, with superli near trends of 1.53$pm$0.07 and 1.55$pm$0.05, respectively. We find an offset to higher HCN (3-2)/HCN (1-0) intensity ratios (~0.8) in IRAS 13120-5453 compared to NGC 3256 (~0.3-0.4) and NGC 7469 (~0.3-0.5). The HCN (4-3)/HCN (3-2) intensity ratio in NGC 7469 has a slope of 1.34$pm$0.05. We attribute the variation within NGC 3256 to excitation associated with the northern and southern nuclei. In NGC 7469, the variations are localized to the region surrounding the active galactic nucleus. At our resolution (~700 pc), IRAS 13120-5453 shows little variation in the HCN intensity ratios. Individual galaxies show nearly constant CN (2-1)/CN (1-0) intensity ratios. We find an offset to lower CN (2-1)/CN (1-0) intensity ratios (~0.5) in NGC 3256 compared to the other two galaxies (~0.8). For the CN (3-2)/CN (2-1) intensity ratio, NGC 7469 has a superlinear trend of 1.55$pm$0.04, with the peak localized toward the active galactic nucleus. We find high (~1.7) CN (1-0)/HCN (1-0) intensity ratios in IRAS 13120-5453 and in the northern nucleus of NGC 3256, compared to a more constant ratio (~1.1) in NGC 7469 and non-starbursting regions of NGC 3256.
The solar surface magnetic field is connected with and even controls most of the solar activity phenomena. Zeeman effect diagnostics allow for measuring only a small fraction of the fractal-like structured magnetic field. The remaining hidden magneti c fields can only be accessed with the Hanle effect. Molecular lines are very convenient for applying the Hanle effect diagnostics thanks to the broad range of magnetic sensitivities in a narrow spectral region. With the UV version of the Zurich Imaging Polarimeter ZIMPOL II installed at the 45 cm telescope of the Istituto Ricerche Solari Locarno (IRSOL), we simultaneously observed intensity and linear polarization center-to-limb variations in two spectral regions containing the (0,0) and (1,1) bandheads of the CN B 2 {Sigma} - X 2 {Sigma} system. Here we present an analysis of these observations. We have implemented coherent scattering in molecular lines into a NLTE radiative transfer code. A two-step approach was used. First, we separately solved the statistical equilibrium equations and compute opacities and intensity while neglecting polariza- tion. Then we used these quantities as input for calculating scattering polarization and the Hanle effect. We have found that it is impossible to fit the intensity and polarization simultaneously at different limb angles in the frame- work of standard 1D modeling. The atmosphere models that provide correct intensity center-to-limb variations fail to fit linear polar- ization center-to-limb variations due to lacking radiation field anisotropy. We had to increase the anisotropy by means of a specially introduced free parameter. This allows us to successfully interpret our observations. We discuss possible reasons for underestimating the anisotropy in the 1D modeling.
Abundance variations in moderately metal-rich globular clusters can give clues about the formation and chemical enrichment of globular clusters. CN, CH, Na, Mg and Al indices in spectra of 89 stars of the template metal-rich globular cluster M71 are measured and implications on internal mixing are discussed. Stars from the turn-off up to the Red Giant Branch (0.87 $<$ log g $<$ 4.65) observed with the GMOS multi-object spectrograph at the Gemini-North telescope are analyzed. Radial velocities, colours, effective temperatures, gravities and spectral indices are determined for the sample. Previous findings related to the CN bimodality and CN-CH anticorrelation in stars of M71 are confirmed. We also find a CN-Na correlation, and Al-Na, as well as an Mg$_2$-Al anticorrelation. A combination of convective mixing and a primordial pollution by AG or massive stars in the early stages of globular cluster formation is required to explain the observations.
We present a systematic study of the metallicity variations within the collisional ring galaxy NGC 922 based on long-slit optical spectroscopic observations. We find a metallicity difference between star-forming regions in the bulge and the ring, wit h metallicities ranging from almost solar to significantly sub-solar ($rm{[12+log(O/H)]sim 8.2}$). We detect $rm He,_I$ emission in the bulge and the ring star-forming regions indicating ionization from massive stars associated with recent ($<10$ Myr) star-formation, in agreement with the presence of very young star-clusters in all studied regions. We find an anti-correlation between the X-ray luminosity and metallicity of the sub-galactic regions of NGC 922. The different regions have similar stellar population ages leaving metallicity as the main driver of the anti-correlation. The dependence of the X-ray emission of the different regions in NGC 922 on metallicity is in agreement with similar studies of the integrated X-ray output of galaxies and predictions from X-ray binary population models.
The azimuthal variation of the HII region oxygen abundance in spiral galaxies is a key observable for understanding how quickly oxygen produced by massive stars can be dispersed within the surrounding interstellar medium. Observational constraints on the prevalence and magnitude of such azimuthal variations remain rare in the literature. Here, we report the discovery of pronounced azimuthal variations of HII region oxygen abundance in NGC 2997, a spiral galaxy at approximately 11.3 Mpc. Using 3D spectroscopic data from the TYPHOON Program, we study the HII region oxygen abundance at a physical resolution of 125 pc. Individual HII regions or complexes are identified in the 3D optical data and their strong emission line fluxes measured to constrain their oxygen abundances. We find 0.06 dex azimuthal variations in the oxygen abundance on top of a radial abundance gradient that is comparable to those seen in other star-forming disks. At a given radial distance, the oxygen abundances are highest in the spiral arms and lower in the inter-arm regions, similar to what has been reported in NGC 1365 using similar observations. We discuss whether the azimuthal variations could be recovered when the galaxy is observed at worse physical resolutions and lower signal-to-noise ratios.
