Optical conductivity of a moderately disordered superconducting NbN film was investigated by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in external magnetic field applied along the film plane. The film thickness of about 5 nm was comparable with the coherence length, so vortices should not form. This was confirmed by the fact that no marked difference between the spectra with terahertz electric field set perpendicular and parallel to the external magnetic field was observed. Simultaneous use of Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory and the model of optical conductivity by Herman and Hlubina proved to correctly reproduce the terahertz spectra obtained experimentally in a magnetic field of up to 7 T. This let us conclude that the magnetic field tends to suppress the superconductivity, resulting in an inhomogeneous state where superconducting domains are enclosed within a normal-state matrix. The scattering rate due to pair-breaking effects was found to linearly increase with magnetic field.

Occurrence of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition is investigated by superfluid density measurements for two-dimensional (2D) disordered NbN films with disorder level very close to a superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). Our dat a show a robust BKT transition even near this 2D disorder-tuned quantum critical point (QCP). This observation is in direct contrast with previous data on deeply underdoped quasi-2D cuprates near the SIT. As our NbN films approach the QCP, the vortex-core energy, an important energy scale in the BKT transition, scales with the superconducting gap, not with the superfluid density, as expected within the standard 2D-XY model description of BKT physics.
The effect of an electric field on the conductance of ultrathin films of metals deposited on substrates coated with a thin layer of amorphous Ge was investigated. A contribution to the conductance modulation symmetric with respect to the polarity of the applied electric field was found in regimes in which there was no sign of glassy behavior. For films with thicknesses that put them on the insulating side of the superconductor-insulator transition, the conductance increased with electric field, whereas for films that were becoming superconducting it decreased. Application of magnetic fields to the latter, which reduce the transition temperature and ultimately quench superconductivity, changed the sign of the reponse of the conductance to electric field back to that found for insulators. We propose that this symmetric response to capacitive charging is a consequence of changes in the conductance of the a-Ge layer, and is not a fundamental property of the physics of the superconductor-insulator transition as previously suggested.
We study theoretically orbital effects of a parallel magnetic field applied to a disordered superconducting film. We find that the field reduces the phase stiffness and leads to strong quantum phase fluctuations driving the system into an insulating behavior. This microscopic model shows that the critical field decreases with the sheet resistance, in agreement with recent experimental results. The predictions of this model can be used to discriminate spin and orbital effects. We find that experiments conducted by A. Johansson textit{et al.} are more consistent with the orbital mechanism.

We study a tunnel junction consisting of two thin-film s-wave superconductors separated by a thin, insulating barrier in the presence of misaligned in-plane exchange fields. We find an interesting interplay between the superconducting phase differenc e and the relative orientation of the exchange fields, manifested in the Josephson current across the junction. Specifically, this may be written $I_text{J}^text{C} = (I_0+I_m ~ cosphi) sinDeltatheta$, where I_0 and I_m are constants, and $phi$ is the relative orientation of the exchange fields while $Deltatheta$ is the superconducting phase difference. Similar results have recently been obtained in other S/I/S junctions coexisting with helimagnetic or ferromagnetic order. We calculate the superconducting order parameter self-consistently, and investigate quantitatively the effect which the misaligned exchange fields constitute on the Josephson current, to see if I_m may have an appreciable effect on the Josephson current. It is found that I_0 and I_m become comparable in magnitude at sufficiently low temperatures and fields close to the critical value, in agreement with previous work. From our analytical results, it then follows that the Josephson current in the present system may be controlled in a well-defined manner by a rotation of the exchange fields on both sides of the junction. We discuss a possible experimental realization of this proposition.
Superconductor insulator transition in transverse magnetic field is studied in the highly disordered MoC film with the product of the Fermi momentum and the mean free path $k_F*l$ close to unity. Surprisingly, the Zeeman paramagnetic effects dominate over orbital coupling on both sides of the transition. In superconducting state it is evidenced by a high upper critical magnetic field $B_{c2}$, by its square root dependence on temperature, as well as by the Zeeman splitting of the quasiparticle density of states (DOS) measured by scanning tunneling microscopy. At $B_{c2}$ a logarithmic anomaly in DOS is observed. This anomaly is further enhanced in increasing magnetic field, which is explained by the Zeeman splitting of the Altshuler-Aronov DOS driving the system into a more insulating or resistive state. Spin dependent Altshuler-Aronov correction is also needed to explain the transport behavior above $B_{c2}$.
