We introduce a new class of primitive building blocks for realizing quantum logic elements based on nanoscale magnetization textures called skyrmions. In a skyrmion qubit, information is stored in the quantum degree of helicity, and the logical states can be adjusted by electric and magnetic fields, offering a rich operation regime with high anharmonicity. By exploring a large parameter space, we propose two skyrmion qubit variants depending on their quantized state. We discuss appropriate microwave pulses required to generate single-qubit gates for quantum computing, and skyrmion multiqubit schemes for a scalable architecture with tailored couplings. Scalability, controllability by microwave fields, operation time scales, and readout by nonvolatile techniques converge to make the skyrmion qubit highly attractive as a logical element of a quantum processor.

Superconducting circuits are currently developed as a versatile platform for the exploration of many-body physics, both at the analog and digital levels. Their building blocks are often idealized as two-level qubits, drawing powerful analogies to qua ntum spin models. For a charge qubit that is capacitively coupled to a transmission line, this analogy leads to the celebrated spin-boson description of quantum dissipation. We put here into evidence a failure of the two-level paradigm for realistic superconducting devices, due to electrostatic constraints which limit the maximum strength of dissipation. These prevent the occurence of the spin-boson quantum phase transition for transmons, even up to relatively large non-linearities. A different picture for the many-body ground state describing strongly dissipative transmons is proposed, showing unusual zero point fluctuations.

A weakly bound electron in a semiconductor quantum wire is shown to become entangled with an itinerant electron via the coulomb interaction. The degree of entanglement and its variation with energy of the injected electron, may be tuned by choice of spin and initial momentum. Full entanglement is achieved close to energies where there are spin-dependent resonances. Possible realisations of related device structures are discussed.
We introduce a scheme for preparation, manipulation, and readout of Majorana zero modes in semiconducting wires with mesoscopic superconducting islands. Our approach synthesizes recent advances in materials growth with tools commonly used in quantum- dot experiments, including gate-control of tunnel barriers and Coulomb effects, charge sensing, and charge pumping. We outline a sequence of milestones interpolating between zero-mode detection and quantum computing that includes (1) detection of fusion rules for non-Abelian anyons using either proximal charge sensors or pumped current; (2) validation of a prototype topological qubit; and (3) demonstration of non-Abelian statistics by braiding in a branched geometry. The first two milestones require only a single wire with two islands, and additionally enable sensitive measurements of the systems excitation gap, quasiparticle poisoning rates, residual Majorana zero-mode splittings, and topological-qubit coherence times. These pre-braiding experiments can be adapted to other manipulation and readout schemes as well.
Quantum computation requires many qubits that can be coherently controlled and coupled to each other. Qubits that are defined using lithographic techniques are often argued to be promising platforms for scalability, since they can be implemented usin g semiconductor fabrication technology. However, leading solid-state approaches function only at temperatures below 100 mK, where cooling power is extremely limited, and this severely impacts the perspective for practical quantum computation. Recent works on spins in silicon have shown steps towards a platform that can be operated at higher temperatures by demonstrating long spin lifetimes, gate-based spin readout, and coherent single-spin control, but the crucial two-qubit logic gate has been missing. Here we demonstrate that silicon quantum dots can have sufficient thermal robustness to enable the execution of a universal gate set above one Kelvin. We obtain single-qubit control via electron-spin-resonance (ESR) and readout using Pauli spin blockade. We show individual coherent control of two qubits and measure single-qubit fidelities up to 99.3 %. We demonstrate tunability of the exchange interaction between the two spins from 0.5 up to 18 MHz and use this to execute coherent two-qubit controlled rotations (CROT). The demonstration of `hot and universal quantum logic in a semiconductor platform paves the way for quantum integrated circuits hosting the quantum hardware and their control circuitry all on the same chip, providing a scalable approach towards practical quantum information.
We consider the effect of electron-electron interactions on a voltage biased quantum point contact in the tunneling regime used as a detector of a nearby qubit. We model the leads of the quantum point contact as Luttinger liquids, incorporate the eff ects of finite temperature and analyze the detection-induced decoherence rate and the detector efficiency, $Q$. We find that interactions generically reduce the induced decoherence along with the detectors efficiency, and strongly affect the relative strength of the decoherence induced by tunneling and that induced by interactions with the local density. With increasing interaction strength, the regime of quantum-limited detection ($Q=1$) is shifted to increasingly lower temperatures or higher bias voltages respectively. For small to moderate interaction strengths, $Q$ is a monotonously decreasing function of temperature as in the non-interacting case. Surprisingly, for sufficiently strong interactions we identify an intermediate temperature regime where the efficiency of the detector increases with rising temperature.
