Collider experiments often exploit information about the quantum numbers of final state hadrons to maximize their sensitivity, with applications ranging from the use of tracking information (electric charge) for precision jet substructure measurements, to flavor tagging for nucleon structure studies. For such measurements perturbative calculations in terms of quarks and gluons are insufficient, and non-perturbative track functions describing the energy fraction of a quark or gluon converted into a subset of hadrons (e.g. charged hadrons), must be incorporated. Unlike fragmentation functions, track functions describe correlations between hadrons, and therefore satisfy complicated non-linear evolution equations whose structure has so far eluded calculation beyond the leading order. In this Letter we develop an understanding of track functions, and their interplay with energy flow observables, beyond the leading order, allowing them to be used in state-of-the-art perturbative calculations for the first time. We identify a shift symmetry in the evolution of their moments that fixes their structure, and we explicitly compute the evolution of the first three moments at next-to-leading order, allowing for the description of up to three-point energy correlations. We then calculate the two-point energy correlator on charged particles at $O(alpha_s^2)$, illustrating explicitly that infrared singularities in perturbation theory are absorbed by moments of the track functions, and also highlighting how these moments seamlessly interplay with modern techniques for perturbative calculations. Our results extend the boundaries of traditional perturbative QCD, enabling precision perturbative predictions for energy flow observables sensitive to the quantum numbers of hadronic states.

In e+e- event shapes studies at LEP, two different measurements were sometimes performed: a calorimetric measurement using both charged and neutral particles, and a track-based measurement using just charged particles. Whereas calorimetric measuremen ts are infrared and collinear safe and therefore calculable in perturbative QCD, track-based measurements necessarily depend on non-perturbative hadronization effects. On the other hand, track-based measurements typically have smaller experimental uncertainties. In this paper, we present the first calculation of the event shape track thrust and compare to measurements performed at ALEPH and DELPHI. This calculation is made possible through the recently developed formalism of track functions, which are non-perturbative objects describing how energetic partons fragment into charged hadrons. By incorporating track functions into soft-collinear effective theory, we calculate the distribution for track thrust with next-to-leading logarithmic resummation. Due to a partial cancellation between non-perturbative parameters, the distributions for calorimeter thrust and track thrust are remarkably similar, a feature also seen in LEP data.
The predictive power of perturbative QCD (pQCD) depends on two important issues: (1) how to eliminate the renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities at fixed order, and (2) how to reliably estimate the contributions of unknown higher-order terms us ing information from the known pQCD series. The Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) satisfies all of the principles of the renormalization group and eliminates the scheme-and-scale ambiguities by the recursive use of the renormalization group equation to determine the scale of the QCD running coupling $alpha_s$ at each order. Moreover, the resulting PMC predictions are independent of the choice of the renormalization scheme, satisfying the key principle of renormalization group invariance. In this letter, we show that by using the conformal series derived using the PMC single-scale procedure, in combination with the Pade Approximation Approach (PAA), one can achieve quantitatively useful estimates for the unknown higher-order terms from the known perturbative series. We illustrate this procedure for three hadronic observables $R_{e^+e^-}$, $R_{tau}$, and $Gamma(H to b bar{b})$ which are each known to 4 loops in pQCD. We show that if the PMC prediction for the conformal series for an observable (of leading order $alpha_s^p$) has been determined at order $alpha^n_s$, then the $[N/M]=[0/n-p]$ Pade series provides quantitatively useful predictions for the higher-order terms. We also show that the PMC + PAA predictions agree at all orders with the fundamental, scheme-independent Generalized Crewther relations which connect observables, such as deep inelastic neutrino-nucleon scattering, to hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation. Thus, by using the combination of the PMC series and the Pade method, the predictive power of pQCD theory can be greatly improved.
We apply perturbative QCD to investigate the near threshold heavy quarkonium photoproduction at large momentum transfer. From an explicit calculation, we show that the conventional power counting method will be modified and the three quark Fock state with nonzero orbital angular momentum dominates the near threshold production. It carries a power behavior of $1/(-t)^5$ for the differential cross section. We further comment on the impact of our results on the interpretation of the experiment measurement in terms of the gluonic gravitational form factors of the proton.

The inclusive production of hadrons through electroweak currents can be rigorously analysed with short-distance theoretical tools. The associated observables are insensitive to the involved infrared behaviour of the strong interaction, allowing for v ery precise tests of Quantum Chromodynamics. The theoretical predictions for $sigma(e^+e^-tomathrm{hadrons})$ and the hadronic decay widths of the $tau$ lepton and the $Z$, $W$ and Higgs bosons have reached an impressive accuracy of $mathcal{O}(alpha_s^4)$. Precise experimental measurements of the $Z$ and $tau$ hadronic widths have made possible the accurate determination of the strong coupling at two very different energy scales, providing a highly significant experimental verification of asymptotic freedom. A detailed discussion of the theoretical description of these processes and their current phenomenological status is presented. The most precise determinations of $alpha_s$ from other sources are also briefly reviewed and compared with the fully-inclusive results.
The lepton angular distributions of the Drell-Yan process in fixed-target experiments are investigated by NLO and NNLO perturbative QCD. We present the calculated angular parameters $lambda$, $mu$, $ u$ and the degree of violation of the Lam-Tung rel ation, $1-lambda-2 u$, for the NA10, E615 and E866 experiments. Predictions for the ongoing COMPASS and SeaQuest experiments are also presented. The transverse momentum ($q_T$) distributions of $lambda$ and $ u$ show a clear dependence on the dimuon mass ($Q$) while those of $mu$ have a strong rapidity ($x_F$) dependence. Furthermore, $lambda$ and $ u$ are found to scale with $q_T/Q$. These salient features could be qualitatively understood by a geometric approach where the lepton angular distribution parameters are expressed in terms of the polar and azimuthal angles of the natural axis in the dilepton rest frame.
