We propose two optimal phase-estimation schemes that can be used for quantum-enhanced long-baseline interferometry. By using distributed entanglement, it is possible to eliminate the loss of stellar photons during transmission over the baselines. The first protocol is a sequence of gates using nonlinear optical elements, optimized over all possible measurement schemes to saturate the Cramer-Rao bound. The second approach builds on an existing protocol, which encodes the time of arrival of the stellar photon into a quantum memory. Our modified version reduces both the number of ancilla qubits and the number of gate operations by a factor of two.

Here we propose an experiment in Linear Optical Quantum Computing (LOQC) using the framework first developed by Knill, Laflamme, and Milburn. This experiment will test the ideas of the authors previous work on imperfect LOQC gates using number-resolv ing photon detectors. We suggest a relatively simple physical apparatus capable of producing CZ gates with controllable fidelity less than 1 and success rates higher than the current theoretical maximum (S=2/27) for perfect fidelity. These experimental setups are within the reach of many experimental groups and would provide an interesting experiment in photonic quantum computing.
Quantum simulation involves engineering devices to implement different Hamiltonians and measuring their quantized spectra to study quantum many-body systems. Recent developments in topological photonics have shown the possibility of studying novel qu antum phenomena by controlling the topological properties of such devices. Here, using coupled arrays of upto 16 high Q nano-cavities we experimentally realize quantum photonic baths which are analogs of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We investigate the effect of fabrication induced disorder on these baths by probing individual super-modes and demonstrate the design mitigation steps required to overcome the disorder effects on the quantum phenomena.
An open question in quantum optics is how to manipulate and control complex quantum states in an experimentally feasible way. Here we present concepts for transformations of high-dimensional multi-photonic quantum systems. The proposals rely on two n ew ideas: (I) a novel high-dimensional quantum non-demolition measurement, (II) the encoding and decoding of the entire quantum transformation in an ancillary state for sharing the necessary quantum information between the involved parties. Many solutions can readily be performed in laboratories around the world, and identify important pathways for experimental research in the near future. The concept has been found using the computer algorithm Melvin for designing computer-inspired quantum experiments. This demonstrates that computer algorithms can inspire new ideas in science, which is a widely unexplored potential.
It is believed that the optimal performance of a quantum lidar or radar in the absence of an idler and only using Gaussian resources cannot exceed the performance of a semiclassical setup based on coherent states and homodyne detection. Here we dispr ove this conjecture by showing that an idler-free squeezed-based setup can beat this benchmark. More generally, we show that probes whose displacement and squeezing are jointly optimized can strictly outperform coherent states with the same mean number of input photons for both the problems of quantum illumination and reading.
By means of optimal control techniques we model and optimize the manipulation of the external quantum state (center-of-mass motion) of atoms trapped in adjustable optical potentials. We consider in detail the cases of both non interacting and interac ting atoms moving between neighboring sites in a lattice of a double-well optical potentials. Such a lattice can perform interaction-mediated entanglement of atom pairs and can realize two-qubit quantum gates. The optimized control sequences for the optical potential allow transport faster and with significantly larger fidelity than is possible with processes based on adiabatic transport.
