We address the challenge of realizing a Floquet-engineered Hofstadter Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in an ultracold atomic gas, as a general prototype for Floquet engineering. Motivated by evidence that such a BEC has been observed experimentally, we show, using Gross-Pitaevskii simulations, how it is dynamically realized. Our simulations support the existence of such a Hofstadter BEC through both momentum-space distributions as well as real-space phase correlations. From these simulations, we identify and characterize a multistage evolution, which includes a chaotic intermediate heating stage followed by a spontaneous reentrance to the Floquet-engineered BEC. The observed behavior is reminiscent of evolution in cosmological models, which involves a similar time progression including an intermediate turbulence en route to equilibration.

We theoretically show that the topology of a non-simply-connected annular atomic Bose-Einstein condensate enforces the inner surface waves to be always excited with outer surface excitations and that the inner surface modes are associated with induce d vortex dipoles unlike the surface waves of a simply-connected one with vortex monopoles. Consequently, under stirring to drive an inner surface wave, a peculiar population oscillation between the inner and outer surface is generated regardless of annulus thickness. Moreover, a new vortex nucleation process by stirring is observed that can merge the inner vortex dipoles and outer vortex into a single vortex inside the annulus. The energy spectrum for a rotating annular condensate with a vortex at the center also reveals the distinct connection of the Tkachenko modes of a vortex lattice to its inner surface excitations.
We present a method for the effective preparation of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) into the excited bands of an optical lattice via a standing-wave pulse sequence. With our method, the BEC can be prepared in either a single Bloch state in a excite d-band, or a coherent superposition of states in different bands. Our scheme is experimentally demonstrated by preparing a $^{87}$Rb BEC into the $d$-band and the superposition of $s$- and $d$-band states of a one-dimensional optical lattice, within a few tens of microseconds. We further measure the decay of the BEC in the $d$-band state, and carry an analytical calculation for the collisional decay of atoms in the excited-band states. Our theoretical and experimental results consist well.
Self-bound quantum droplets are a newly discovered phase in the context of ultracold atoms. In this work we report their experimental realization following the original proposal by Petrov [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 155302 (2015)], using an attractive bos onic mixture. In this system spherical droplets form due to the balance of competing attractive and repulsive forces, provided by the mean-field energy close to the collapse threshold and the first-order correction due to quantum fluctuations. Thanks to an optical levitating potential with negligible residual confinement we observe self-bound droplets in free space and we characterize the conditions for their formation as well as their equilibrium properties. This work sets the stage for future studies on quantum droplets, from the measurement of their peculiar excitation spectrum, to the exploration of their superfluid nature.

We study excitonic states of an atomic impurity in a Fermi gas, i.e., bound states consisting of the impurity and a hole. Previous studies considered bound states of the impurity with particles from the Fermi sea where the holes only formed part of t he particle-hole dressing. Within a two-channel model, we find that, for a wide range of parameters, excitonic states are not ground but metastable states. We further calculate the decay rates of the excitonic states to polaronic and dimeronic states and find they are long lived, scaling as $Gamma^{rm{Exc}}_ {rm{Pol}} propto ( Deltaomega)^{5.5}$ and $Gamma^{rm{Exc}}_ {rm{Dim}} propto (Deltaomega)^{4}$. We also find that a new continuum of exciton-particle states should be considered alongside the previously known dimeron-hole continuum in spectroscopic measurements. Excitons must therefore be considered as a new ingredient in the study of metastable physics currently being explored experimentally.
A space-time crystal has recently been observed in a superfluid Bose gas. Here we construct a variational model that allows us to describe from first principles the coupling between the radial breathing mode and the higher-order axial modes that unde rlies the observation of the space-time crystal. By comparing with numerical simulations we verify the validity of our variational Ansatz. From the model we determine the requirements for the observation of the space-time crystal and the Ising-like nature of the symmetry breaking involved. Also, we find the onset and growth rate of the space-time crystal, which can be compared to experiments.
