This paper presents the use of element-based algebraic multigrid (AMGe) hierarchies, implemented in the ParELAG (Parallel Element Agglomeration Algebraic Multigrid Upscaling and Solvers) library, to produce multilevel preconditioners and solvers for H(curl) and H(div) formulations. ParELAG constructs hierarchies of compatible nested spaces, forming an exact de Rham sequence on each level. This allows the application of hybrid smoothers on all levels and AMS (Auxiliary-space Maxwell Solver) or ADS (Auxiliary-space Divergence Solver) on the coarsest levels, obtaining complete multigrid cycles. Numerical results are presented, showing the parallel performance of the proposed methods. As a part of the exposition, this paper demonstrates some of the capabilities of ParELAG and outlines some of the components and procedures within the library.

An algebraic multilevel iteration method for solving system of linear algebraic equations arising in $H(mathrm{curl})$ and $H(mathrm{div})$ spaces are presented. The algorithm is developed for the discrete problem obtained by using the space of lowes t order Nedelec and Raviart-Thomas-Nedelec elements. The theoretical analysis of the method is based only on some algebraic sequences and generalized eigenvalues of local (element-wise) problems. In the hierarchical basis framework, explicit recursion formulae are derived to compute the element matrices and the constant $gamma$ (which measures the quality of the space splitting) at any given level. It is proved that the proposed method is robust with respect to the problem parameters, and is of optimal order complexity. Supporting numerical results, including the case when the parameters have jumps, are also presented.
The parallel full approximation scheme in space and time (PFASST) introduced by Emmett and Minion in 2012 is an iterative strategy for the temporal parallelization of ODEs and discretized PDEs. As the name suggests, PFASST is similar in spirit to a s pace-time FAS multigrid method performed over multiple time-steps in parallel. However, since the original focus of PFASST has been on the performance of the method in terms of time parallelism, the solution of any spatial system arising from the use of implicit or semi-implicit temporal methods within PFASST have simply been assumed to be solved to some desired accuracy completely at each sub-step and each iteration by some unspecified procedure. It hence is natural to investigate how iterative solvers in the spatial dimensions can be interwoven with the PFASST iterations and whether this strategy leads to a more efficient overall approach. This paper presents an initial investigation on the relative performance of different strategies for coupling PFASST iterations with multigrid methods for the implicit treatment of diffusion terms in PDEs. In particular, we compare full accuracy multigrid solves at each sub-step with a small fixed number of multigrid V-cycles. This reduces the cost of each PFASST iteration at the possible expense of a corresponding increase in the number of PFASST iterations needed for convergence. Parallel efficiency of the resulting methods is explored through numerical examples.
We develop K$omega$, an open-source linear algebra library for the shifted Krylov subspace methods. The methods solve a set of shifted linear equations $(z_k I-H)x^{(k)}=b, (k=0,1,2,...)$ for a given matrix $H$ and a vector $b$, simultaneously. The l eading order of the operational cost is the same as that for a single equation. The shift invariance of the Krylov subspace is the mathematical foundation of the shifted Krylov subspace methods. Applications in materials science are presented to demonstrate the advantages of the algorithm over the standard Krylov subspace methods such as the Lanczos method. We introduce benchmark calculations of (i) an excited (optical) spectrum and (ii) intermediate eigenvalues by the contour integral on the complex plane. In combination with the quantum lattice solver $mathcal{H} Phi$, K$omega$ can realize parallel computation of excitation spectra and intermediate eigenvalues for various quantum lattice models.
We present a novel approach for the construction of basis functions to be employed in selective or adaptive h-refined finite element applications with arbitrary-level hanging node configurations. Our analysis is not restricted to $1$-irregular meshes , as it is usually done in the literature, allowing our results to be applicable to a broader class of local refinement strategies. The proposed method does not require the solution of any linear system to obtain the constraints necessary to enforce continuity of the basis functions and it can be easily implemented. A mathematical analysis is carried out to prove that the proposed basis functions are continuous and linearly independent. Finite element spaces are then defined as the spanning sets of such functions, and the implementation of a multigrid algorithm built on these spaces is discussed. A spectral analysis of the multigrid algorithm highlights superior convergence properties of the proposed method over existing strategies based on a local smoothing procedure. Finally, linear and nonlinear numerical examples are tested to show the robustness and versatility of the multigrid algorithm.
The linear equations that arise in interior methods for constrained optimization are sparse symmetric indefinite and become extremely ill-conditioned as the interior method converges. These linear systems present a challenge for existing solver frame works based on sparse LU or LDL^T decompositions. We benchmark five well known direct linear solver packages using matrices extracted from power grid optimization problems. The achieved solution accuracy varies greatly among the packages. None of the tested packages delivers significant GPU acceleration for our test cases.
