In this note we make progress toward a conjecture of Durham--Fanoni--Vlamis, showing that every infinite-type surface with finite-invariance index 1 and no nondisplaceable compact subsurfaces fails to have a good curve graph, that is, a connected graph where vertices represent homotopy classes of essential simple closed curves and where the natural mapping class group action has infinite diameter orbits. Our arguments use tools developed by Mann--Rafi in their study of the coarse geometry of big mapping class groups.

For some $g geq 3$, let $Gamma$ be a finite index subgroup of the mapping class group of a genus $g$ surface (possibly with boundary components and punctures). An old conjecture of Ivanov says that the abelianization of $Gamma$ should be finite. In t his note, we prove two theorems supporting this conjecture. For the first, let $T_x$ denote the Dehn twist about a simple closed curve $x$. For some $n geq 1$, we have $T_x^n in Gamma$. We prove that $T_x^n$ is torsion in the abelianization of $Gamma$. Our second result shows that the abelianization of $Gamma$ is finite if $Gamma$ contains a large chunk (in a certain technical sense) of the Johnson kernel, that is, the subgroup of the mapping class group generated by twists about separating curves. This generalizes work of Hain and Boggi.
The paper contains a new proof that a complete, non-compact hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ with finite volume contains an immersed, closed, quasi-Fuchsian surface.
Motivated by the construction of free quandles and Dehn quandles of orientable surfaces, we introduce Dehn quandles of groups with respect to their subsets. As a characterisation, we prove that Dehn quandles are precisely those quandles which embed n aturally into their enveloping groups. We prove that the enveloping group of the Dehn quandle of a given group with respect to its generating set is a central extension of that group, and that enveloping groups of Dehn quandles of Artin groups and link groups with respect to their standard generating sets are the groups themselves. We discuss orderability of Dehn quandles and prove that free involutory quandles are left orderable whereas certain generalised Alexander quandles are bi-orderable. Specialising to surfaces, we give generating sets for Dehn quandles of mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with punctures and compute their automorphism groups. As applications, we recover a result of Niebrzydowski and Przytycki proving that the knot quandle of the trefoil knot is isomorphic to the Dehn quandle of the torus and also extend a result of Yetter on epimorphisms of Dehn quandles of orientable surfaces onto certain involutory homological quandles. Finally, we show that involutory quotients of Dehn quandles of closed orientable surfaces of genus less than four are finite.
Given a hyperbolic surface, the set of all closed geodesics whose length is minimal form a graph on the surface, in fact a so-called fat graph, which we call the systolic graph. We study which fat graphs are systolic graphs for some surface (we call these admissible). There is a natural necessary condition on such graphs, which we call combinatorial admissibility. Our first main result is that this condition is also sufficient. It follows that a sub-graph of an admissible graph is admissible. Our second major result is that there are infinitely many minimal non-admissible fat graphs (in contrast, for instance, to the classical result that there are only two minimal non-planar graphs).
Kakimizu complex of a knot is a flag simplicial complex whose vertices correspond to minimal genus Seifert surfaces and edges to disjoint pairs of such surfaces. We discuss a general setting in which one can define a similar complex. We prove that th is complex is contractible, which was conjectured by Kakimizu. More generally, the fixed-point set (in the Kakimizu complex) for any subgroup of an appropriate mapping class group is contractible or empty. Moreover, we prove that this fixed-point set is non-empty for finite subgroups, which implies the existence of symmetric Seifert surfaces.
