A characteristic feature of collective and particle-hole excitations in neutron-rich nuclei is that many of them couple to unbound neutron in continuum single-particle orbits. The continuum random phase approximation (cRPA) is a powerful many-body method that describes such excitations, and it provides a scheme to evaluate transition strengths from the ground state. In an attempt to apply cRPA to the radiative neutron capture reaction, we formulate in the present study an extended scheme of cRPA that describes gamma-transitions from the excited states under consideration, which decay to low-lying excited states as well as the ground state. This is achieved by introducing a non-local one-body operator which causes transitions to a low-lying excited state, and describing a density-matrix response against this operator. As a demonstration of this new scheme, we perform numerical calculation for dipole, quadrupole, and octupole excitations in $^{140}$Sn, and discuss E1 and E2 transitions decaying to low-lying $2^{+}_{1,2}$ and $3^{-}_{1}$ states. The results point to cases where the branching ratio to the low-lying states is larger than or comparable with that to the ground state. We discuss key roles of collectivity and continuum orbits in both initial and final states.

We analyze the isoscalar response related to breathing modes with particular attention being paid to low-lying excitations in neutron--rich nuclei. We use the subtracted second random--phase approximation (SSRPA) to describe microscopically the respo nse. By increasing the neutron excess, we study the evolution of the response in Ca isotopes going from $^{40}$Ca to $^{48}$Ca and to $^{60}$Ca as well as in $N=20$ isotones going from $^{40}$Ca to $^{36}$S and to $^{34}$Si. Finally, the case of $^{68}$Ni is investigated. We predict soft monopole modes in neutron--rich nuclei which are driven by neutron excitations. At variance with dipole pygmy modes, these neutron excitations are not only strongly dominant at the surface of the nucleus but over its entire volume. The effect of the mixing with two particle-two hole configurations induced by the SSRPA model is analyzed. The properties of such soft neutron modes are investigated in terms of their excitation energies, transition densities and wave--function components. Their collectivity is also discussed as a function of the isospin asymmetry and of the mass of the nucleus. The link between such low--energy compression modes and a compressibility modulus introduced for neutron--rich infinite matter is finally studied.

We report on the first in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy study of the very neutron-rich nucleus 46S. The N=30 isotones 46S and 48Ar were produced in a novel way in two steps that both necessarily involve nucleon exchange and neutron pickup reactions, 9B e(48Ca,48K)X followed by 9Be(48K,48Ar+gamma)X at 85.7 MeV/u mid-target energy and 9Be(48Ca,46Cl)X followed by 9Be(46Cl,46S+gamma)X at 87.0 MeV/u mid-target energy, respectively. The results are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations in the sdpf shell using the SDPF-NR effective interaction and Z-dependent modifications.

By coupling a doorway state to a see of random background states, we develop the theory of doorway states in the framework of the random-phase approximation (RPA). Because of the symmetry of the RPA equations, that theory is radically different from the standard description of doorway states in the shell model. We derive the Pastur equation in the limit of large matrix dimension and show that the results agree with those of matrix diagonalization in large spaces. The complexity of the Pastur equation does not allow for an analytical approach that would approximately describe the doorway state. Our numerical results display unexpected features: The coupling of the doorway state with states of opposite energy leads to strong mutual attraction.
Interference effect of neutron capture cross section between the compound and direct processes is investigated. The compound process is calculated by resonance parameters and the direct process by the potential mode. The interference effect is tested for neutron-rich $^{82}$Ge and $^{134}$Sn nuclei relevant to $r$-process and light nucleus $^{13}$C which is neutron poison in the $s$-process and produces long-lived radioactive nucleus $^{14}$C ($T_{1/2}=5700$ y). The interference effects in those nuclei are significant around resonances, and low energy region if $s$-wave neutron direct capture is possible. Maxwellian averaged cross sections at $kT=30$ and $300$ keV are also calculated, and the interference effect changes the Maxwellian averaged capture cross section largely depending on resonance position.

The structure of the nucleus 25F was investigated through in-beam {gamma}-ray spectroscopy of the fragmentation of 26Ne and 27,28Na ion beams. Based on the particle-{gamma} and particle-{gamma}{gamma} coincidence data, a level scheme was constructed and compared with shell model and coupled-cluster calculations. Some of the observed states were interpreted as quasi single-particle states built on top of the closed-shell nucleus 24O, while the others were described as states arising from coupling of a single proton to the 2+ core excitation of 24O.
