In this paper, we introduce a definition of phase response for a class of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) linear time-invariant (LTI) systems whose frequency responses are (semi-)sectorial at all frequencies. The newly defined phase concept subsumes the well-known notions of positive real systems and negative imaginary systems. We formulate a small phase theorem for feedback stability, which complements the celebrated small gain theorem. The small phase theorem lays the foundation of a phase theory of MIMO systems. We also discuss time-domain interpretations of phase-bounded systems via both energy signal analysis and power signal analysis. In addition, a sectored real lemma is derived for the computation of MIMO phases, which serves as a natural counterpart of the bounded real lemma.

The identification of structured state-space model has been intensively studied for a long time but still has not been adequately addressed. The main challenge is that the involved estimation problem is a non-convex (or bilinear) optimization problem . This paper is devoted to developing an identification method which aims to find the global optimal solution under mild computational burden. Key to the developed identification algorithm is to transform a bilinear estimation to a rank constrained optimization problem and further a difference of convex programming (DCP) problem. The initial condition for the DCP problem is obtained by solving its convex part of the optimization problem which happens to be a nuclear norm regularized optimization problem. Since the nuclear norm regularized optimization is the closest convex form of the low-rank constrained estimation problem, the obtained initial condition is always of high quality which provides the DCP problem a good starting point. The DCP problem is then solved by the sequential convex programming method. Finally, numerical examples are included to show the effectiveness of the developed identification algorithm.

This paper presents a computationally efficient solution for constraint management of multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) systems. The solution, referred to as the Decoupled Reference Governor (DRG), maintains the highly-attractive computational feat ures of Scalar Reference Governors (SRG) while having performance comparable to Vector Reference Governors (VRG). DRG is based on decoupling the input-output dynamics of the system, followed by the deployment of a bank of SRGs for each decoupled channel. We present two formulations of DRG: DRG-tf, which is based on system decoupling using transfer functions, and DRG-ss, which is built on state feedback decoupling. A detailed set-theoretic analysis of DRG, which highlights its main characteristics, is presented. We also show a quantitative comparison between DRG and the VRG to illustrate the computational advantages of DRG. The robustness of this approach to disturbances and uncertainties is also investigated.
The large-scale integration of converter-interfaced resources in electrical power systems raises new stability threats which call for a new theoretic framework for modelling and analysis. Here we present the theory of power-communication isomorphism to solve this grand challenge. It is revealed that an intrinsic communication mechanism governs the synchronisation of all apparatus in power systems based on which a unified representation for heterogeneous apparatus and behaviours is established. We develop the mathematics to model the dynamic interaction within a power-communication isomorphic system which yield a simple stability criterion for complex systems that can be intuitively interpreted and thus conveniently applied in practice.
Designing a static state-feedback controller subject to structural constraint achieving asymptotic stability is a relevant problem with many applications, including network decentralized control, coordinated control, and sparse feedback design. Lever aging on the Projection Lemma, this work presents a new solution to a class of state-feedback control problems, in which the controller is constrained to belong to a given linear space. We show through extensive discussion and numerical examples that our approach leads to several advantages with respect to existing methods: first, it is computationally efficient; second, it is less conservative than previous methods, since it relaxes the requirement of restricting the Lyapunov matrix to a block-diagonal form.

In linear systems theory its a well known fact that a regulator given by the cascade of an oscillatory dynamics, driven by some regulated variables, and of a stabiliser stabilising the cascade of the plant and of the oscillators has the ability of bl ocking on the steady state of the regulated variables any harmonics matched with the ones of the oscillators. This is the well-celebrated internal model principle. In this paper we are interested to follow the same design route for a controlled plant that is a nonlinear and periodic system with period T : we add a bunch of linear oscillators, embedding n o harmonics that are multiple of 2$pi$/T , driven by a regulated variable of the nonlinear system, we look for a stabiliser for the nonlinear cascade of the plant and the oscillators, and we study the asymptotic properties of the resulting closedloop regulated variable. In this framework the contributions of the paper are multiple: for specific class of minimum-phase systems we present a systematic way of designing a stabiliser, which is uniform with respect to n o , by using a mix of high-gain and forwarding techniques; we prove that the resulting closed-loop system has a periodic steady state with period T with a domain of attraction not shrinking with n o ; similarly to the linear case, we also show that the spectrum of the steady state closed-loop regulated variable does not contain the n harmonics embedded in the bunch of oscillators and that the L 2 norm of the regulated variable is a monotonically decreasing function of n o. The results are robust, namely the asymptotic properties on the regulated variable hold also in presence of any uncertainties in the controlled plant not destroying closed-loop stability.
