Molybdenum trioxide (MoO$_3$) in-plane anisotropy has increasingly attracted the attention of the scientific community in the last few years. Many of the observed in-plane anisotropic properties stem from the anisotropic refractive index and elastic constants of the material but a comprehensive analysis of these fundamental properties is still lacking. Here we employ Raman and micro-reflectance measurements, using polarized light, to determine the angular dependence of the refractive index of thin MoO$_3$ flakes and we study the directional dependence of the MoO$_3$ Youngs modulus using the buckling metrology method. We found that MoO$_3$ displays one of the largest in-plane anisotropic mechanical properties reported for 2D materials so far.

Boron nitride structures have excellent thermal and chemical stabilities. Based on state-of-art theoretical calculations, we propose a wide gap semiconducting BN crystal with a three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb structure (Hp-BN), which is both mechani cally and thermodynamically stable. Our calculated results show that Hp-BN has a higher bulk modulus and a smaller energy gap as compared to c-BN. Moreover, due to the unique bonding structure, Hp-BN exhibits anisotropic electronic and optical properties. It has great adsorption in the ultraviolet region, but it is highly transparent in the visible and infrared region, suggesting that the Hp-BN crystal could have potential applications in electronic and optical devices.
Orhorhombic $alpha$-MoO$_3$ is a layered oxide with various applications and with excellent potential to be exfoliated as a 2D ultrathin film or monolayer. In this paper, we present a first-principles computational study of its vibrational properties . Our focus is on the zone center modes which can be measured by a combination of infared and Raman spectroscopy. The polarization dependent spectra are simulated. Calculations are also performed for a monolayer form in which double layers of Mo$_2$O$_6$ which are weakly van der Waals bonded in the $alpha$-structure are isolated. Shift in phonon frequencies are analyzed.
Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) films of layered metal-chalcogenides have attractive optoelectronic properties. However, photonic applications of thin films may be limited owing to weak light absorption and surface effects leading to reduced quantum yield . Integration of 2D films in optical microcavities will permit these limitations to be overcome owing to modified light coupling with the films. Here we present tunable microcavities with embedded monolayer MoS2 or few monolayer GaSe films. We observe significant modification of spectral and temporal properties of photoluminescence (PL): PL is emitted in spectrally narrow and wavelength-tunable cavity modes with quality factors up to 7400; PL life-time shortening by a factor of 10 is achieved, a consequence of Purcell enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate. This work has potential to pave the way to microcavity-enhanced light-emitting devices based on layered 2D materials and their heterostructures, and also opens possibilities for cavity QED in a new material system of van der Waals crystals.

Optical and electronic properties of two dimensional few layers graphitic silicon carbide (GSiC), in particular monolayer and bilayer, are investigated by density functional theory and found different from that of graphene and silicene. Monolayer GSi C has direct bandgap while few layers exhibit indirect bandgap. The bandgap of monolayer GSiC can be tuned by an in-plane strain. Properties of bilayer GSiC are extremely sensitive to the interlayer distance. These predictions promise that monolayer GSiC could be a remarkable candidate for novel type of light-emitting diodes utilizing its unique optical properties distinct from graphene, silicene and few layers GSiC.
Anisotropic materials, with orientation-dependent properties, have attracted more and more attention due to their compelling tunable and flexible performance in electronic and optomechanical devices. So far, two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus show s the largest known anisotropic behavior, which is highly desired for synaptic and neuromorphic devices, multifunctional directional memories, and even polarization-sensitive photodetector, whereas it is unstable at ambient conditions. Recently, 2D few-layered As2S3 with superior chemical stability was successfully exfoliated in experiments. However, the electronic and mechanical properties of monolayer and bilayer As2S3 is still lacking. Here, we report the large anisotropic electronic and mechanical properties of As2S3 systems through first-principles calculations and general angle-dependent Hookes law. Monolayer and bilayer As2S3 exhibit anisotropic factors of Youngs modulus of 3.15 and 3.32, respectively, which are larger than the black phosphorous with experimentally confirmed and an anisotropic factor of 2. This study provides an effective route to flexible orientation-dependent nanoelectronics, nanomechanics, and offers implications in promoting related experimental investigations.
