The age of iron meteorites implies that accretion of protoplanets began during the first millions of years of the solar system. Due to the heat generated by 26Al decay, many early protoplanets were fully differentiated with an igneous crust produced during the cooling of a magma ocean and the segregation at depth of a metallic core. The formation and nature of the primordial crust generated during the early stages of melting is poorly understood, due in part to the scarcity of available samples. The newly discovered meteorite Erg Chech 002 (EC 002) originates from one such primitive igneous crust and has an andesite bulk composition. It derives from the partial melting of a noncarbonaceous chondritic reservoir, with no depletion in alkalis relative to the Sun photosphere and at a high degree of melting of around 25 percents. Moreover, EC 002 is, to date, the oldest known piece of an igneous crust with a 26Al-26Mg crystallization age of 4,565.0 million years (My). Partial melting took place at 1,220 C up to several hundred kyr before, implying an accretion of the EC 002 parent body ca. 4,566 My ago. Protoplanets covered by andesitic crusts were probably frequent. However, no asteroid shares the spectral features of EC 002, indicating that almost all of these bodies have disappeared, either because they went on to form the building blocks of larger bodies or planets or were simply destroyed.

Oumuamua was discovered passing through our Solar System on a hyperbolic orbit. It presents an apparent contradiction, with colors similar to those of volatile-rich Solar System bodies but with no visible outgassing or activity during its close appro ach to the Sun. Here we show that this contradiction can be explained by the dynamics of planetesimal ejection by giant planets. We propose that Oumuamua is an extinct fragment of a comet-like planetesimal born in a planet-forming disk that also formed Neptune- to Jupiter-mass giant planets. On its pathway to ejection Oumuamuas parent body underwent a close encounter with a giant planet and was tidally disrupted into small pieces, similar to comet Shoemaker-Levy 9s disruption after passing close to Jupiter. We use dynamical simulations to show that 0.1-1% of cometary planetesimals undergo disruptive encounters prior to ejection. Rocky asteroidal planetesimals are unlikely to disrupt due to their higher densities. After disruption, the bulk of fragments undergo enough close passages to their host stars to lose their surface volatiles and become extinct. Planetesimal fragments such as Oumuamua contain little of the mass in the population of interstellar objects but dominate by number. Our model makes predictions that will be tested in the coming decade by LSST.
The appearance of interstellar objects (ISOs) in the Solar System -- and specifically the arrival of 1I/Oumuamua -- points to a significant number density of free-floating bodies in the solar neighborhood. We review the details of Oumuamuas pre-encou nter galactic orbit, which intersected the Solar System at very nearly its maximum vertical and radial excursion relative to the galactic plane. These kinematic features are strongly emblematic of nearby young stellar associations. We obtain an a-priori order-of-magnitude age estimate for Oumuamua by comparing its orbit to the orbits of 50,899 F-type stars drawn from Gaia DR2; a diffusion model then suggests a $sim$ 35 Myr dynamical age. We compare Oumuamuas orbit with the trajectories of individual nearby moving groups, confirming that its motion is fully consistent with membership in the Carina (CAR) moving group with an age around 30 Myr. We conduct Monte Carlo simulations that trace the orbits of test particles ejected from the stars in the Carina association. The simulations indicate that in order to uniformly populate the $sim10^6$ pc$^3$ volume occupied by CAR members with the inferred number density, $n=0.2,{rm AU}^{-3}$, of ISOs implied by Pan-STARRS detection of Oumuamua, the required ejection mass is $Msim 500$ $M_{rm Jup}$ per known star within the CAR association. This suggests that the Pan-STARRS observation is in significant tension with scenarios that posit Oumuamuas formation and ejection from a protostellar disk.
How simple organic matter appeared on Earth and the processes by which it transformed into more evolved organic compounds, which ultimately led to the emergence of life, is still an open topic. Different scenarios have been proposed, the main one ass umes that simple organic compounds were synthesized, either in the gas phase or on the surfaces of dust grains, during the process of star formation, and were incorporated into larger bodies in the protoplanetary disk. Transformation of these simple organic compounds in more complex forms is still a matter of debate. Recent discoveries point out to catalytic properties of dust grains present in the early stellar envelope, which can nowadays be found in the form of chondrites. The huge infall of chondritic meteorites during the early periods of Earth suggests that the same reactions could have taken place in certain environments of the Earth surface, with conditions more favorable for organic synthesis. This work attempts the synthesis of simple organic molecules, such as hydrocarbons and alcohols, via Fischer-Tropsch Type reactions supported by different chondritic materials under early-Earth conditions, to investigate if organic synthesis can likely occur in this environment and which are the differences in selectivity when using different types of chondrites. Fischer-Tropsch-type reactions are investigated from mixtures of CO and H2 at 1 atm of pressure on the surfaces of different chondritic samples. The different products obtained are analyzed in situ by gas chromatography. Different Fischer-Tropsch reaction products are obtained in quantitative amounts. The formation of alkanes and alkenes being the main processes. Formation of alcohols also takes place in a smaller amount. Other secondary products were obtained in a qualitative way.

(Abridged) We describe Spitzer IRAC and MIPS observations of the populous, 5 Myr-old open cluster NGC 2362. Early/intermediate-type confirmed/candidate cluster members either have photospheric mid-IR emission or weak, optically-thin infrared excess e mission at < 24 microns consistent with debris disks. Few late-type, solar/subsolar-mass stars have primordial disks. The disk population around late-type stars is dominated by disks with inner holes (canonical transition disks) and homologously depleted disks. Both types of disks represent an intermediate stage between primordial disks and debris disks. Thus, we find that multiple paths for the primordial-to-debris disk transition exist. Our results undermine standard arguments in favor of a ~ 0.01 Myr year timescale for the transition based on data from Taurus-Auriga and rule out standard UV photoevaporation scenarios as the primary mechanism to explain the transition. Combining our data with other Spitzer surveys, we investigate the evolution of debris disks around high/intermediate-mass stars and investigate timescales for giant planet formation. If the gas and dust in disks evolve on similar timescales, the formation timescale for gas giant planets surrounding early-type, high/intermediate-mass stars is likely 1--5 Myr. Most solar/subsolar-mass stars detected by Spitzer have SEDs that indicate their disks may be actively leaving the primordial disk phase. Thus, gas giant planet formation may also occur by 5 Myr around solar/subsolar-mass stars as well.

We report the detection of a planetary companion around HIP 13044, a metal-poor red horizontal branch star belonging to a stellar halo stream that results from the disruption of an ancient Milky Way satellite galaxy. The detection is based on radial velocity observations with FEROS at the 2.2-m MPG/ESO telescope. The periodic radial velocity variation of P=16.2 days can be distinguished from the periods of the stellar activity indicators. We computed a minimum planetary mass of 1.25 Jupiter masses and an orbital semimajor axis of 0.116 AU for the planet. This discovery is unique in three aspects: First, it is the first planet detection around a star with a metallicity much lower than few percent of the solar value; second, the planet host star resides in a stellar evolutionary stage that is still unexplored in the exoplanet surveys; third, the planetary system HIP 13044 most likely has an extragalactic origin in a disrupted former satellite of the Milky Way.
