Predicate logic is the premier choice for specifying classes of relational structures. Homomorphisms are key to describing correspondences between relational structures. Questions concerning the interdependencies between these two means of characterizing (classes of) structures are of fundamental interest and can be highly non-trivial to answer. We investigate several problems regarding the homomorphism closure (homclosure) of the class of all (finite or arbitrary) models of logical sentences: membership of structures in a sentences homclosure; sentence homclosedness; homclosure characterizability in a logic; normal forms for homclosed sentences in certain logics. For a wide variety of fragments of first- and second-order predicate logic, we clarify these problems computational properties.

Spatial aspects of computation are becoming increasingly relevant in Computer Science, especially in the field of collective adaptive systems and when dealing with systems distributed in physical space. Traditional formal verification techniques are well suited to analyse the temporal evolution of programs; however, properties of space are typically not taken into account explicitly. We present a topology-based approach to formal verification of spatial properties depending upon physical space. We define an appropriate logic, stemming from the tradition of topological interpretations of modal logics, dating back to earlier logicians such as Tarski, where modalities describe neighbourhood. We lift the topological definitions to the more general setting of closure spaces, also encompassing discrete, graph-based structures. We extend the framework with a spatial surrounded operator, a propagation operator and with some collective operators. The latter are interpreted over arbitrary sets of points instead of individual points in space. We define efficient model checking procedures, both for the individual and the collective spatial fragments of the logic and provide a proof-of-concept tool.
We characterise the sentences in Monadic Second-order Logic (MSO) that are over finite structures equivalent to a Datalog program, in terms of an existential pebble game. We also show that for every class C of finite structures that can be expressed in MSO and is closed under homomorphisms, and for all integers l,k, there exists a *canonical* Datalog program Pi of width (l,k), that is, a Datalog program of width (l,k) which is sound for C (i.e., Pi only derives the goal predicate on a finite structure A if A is in C) and with the property that Pi derives the goal predicate whenever *some* Datalog program of width (l,k) which is sound for C derives the goal predicate. The same characterisations also hold for Guarded Second-order Logic (GSO), which properly extends MSO. To prove our results, we show that every class C in GSO whose complement is closed under homomorphisms is a finite union of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) of countably categorical structures.

We survey recent results on the topological complexity of context-free omega-languages which form the second level of the Chomsky hierarchy of languages of infinite words. In particular, we consider the Borel hierarchy and the Wadge hierarchy of non- deterministic or deterministic context-free omega-languages. We study also decision problems, the links with the notions of ambiguity and of degrees of ambiguity, and the special case of omega-powers.

We solve some decision problems for timed automata which were recently raised by S. Tripakis in [ Folk Theorems on the Determinization and Minimization of Timed Automata, in the Proceedings of the International Workshop FORMATS2003, LNCS, Volume 2791 , p. 182-188, 2004 ] and by E. Asarin in [ Challenges in Timed Languages, From Applied Theory to Basic Theory, Bulletin of the EATCS, Volume 83, p. 106-120, 2004 ]. In particular, we show that one cannot decide whether a given timed automaton is determinizable or whether the complement of a timed regular language is timed regular. We show that the problem of the minimization of the number of clocks of a timed automaton is undecidable. It is also undecidable whether the shuffle of two timed regular languages is timed regular. We show that in the case of timed Buchi automata accepting infinite timed words some of these problems are Pi^1_1-hard, hence highly undecidable (located beyond the arithmetical hierarchy).

This is an extended abstract presenting new results on the topological complexity of omega-powers (which are included in a paper Classical and effective descriptive complexities of omega-powers available from arXiv:0708.4176) and reflecting also some open questions which were discussed during the Dagstuhl seminar on Topological and Game-Theoretic Aspects of Infinite Computations 29.06.08 - 04.07.08.
