In this work, an $r$-linearly converging adaptive solver is constructed for parabolic evolution equations in a simultaneous space-time variational formulation. Exploiting the product structure of the space-time cylinder, the family of trial spaces that we consider are given as the spans of wavelets-in-time and (locally refined) finite element spaces-in-space. Numerical results illustrate our theoretical findings.

We introduce a new efficient algorithm for Helmholtz problems in perforated domains with the design of the scheme allowing for possibly large wavenumbers. Our method is based upon the Wavelet-based Edge Multiscale Finite Element Method (WEMsFEM) as p roposed recently in [14]. For a regular coarse mesh with mesh size H, we establish O(H) convergence of this algorithm under the resolution assumption, and with the level parameter being sufficiently large. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated by extensive 2-dimensional numerical tests including those motivated by photonic crystals.
We develop a unified theory for continuous in time finite element discretisations of partial differential equations posed in evolving domains including the consideration of equations posed on evolving surfaces and bulk domains as well coupled surface bulk systems. We use an abstract variational setting with time dependent function spaces and abstract time dependent finite element spaces. Optimal a priori bounds are shown under usual assumptions on perturbations of bilinear forms and approximation properties of the abstract finite element spaces. The abstract theory is applied to evolving finite elements in both flat and curved spaces. Evolving bulk and surface isoparametric finite element spaces defined on evolving triangulations are defined and developed. These spaces are used to define approximations to parabolic equations in general domains for which the abstract theory is shown to apply. Numerical experiments are described which confirm the rates of convergence.
In this paper, we develop an adaptive finite element method for the nonlinear steady-state Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations, where the spatial adaptivity for geometrical singularities and boundary layer effects are mainly considered. As a key contribu tion, the steady-state Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations are studied systematically and rigorous analysis for a residual-based a posteriori error estimate of the nonlinear system is presented. With the help of Schauder fixed point theorem, we show the solution existence and uniqueness of the linearized system derived by taking $G-$derivatives of the nonlinear system, followed by the proof of the relationship between the error of solution and the a posteriori error estimator $eta$. Numerical experiments are given to validate the efficiency of the a posteriori error estimator and demonstrate the expected rate of convergence. In the further tests, adaptive mesh refinements for geometrical singularities and boundary layer effects are successfully observed.
We analyze Galerkin discretizations of a new well-posed mixed space-time variational formulation of parabolic PDEs. For suitable pairs of finite element trial spaces, the resulting Galerkin operators are shown to be uniformly stable. The method is co mpared to two related space-time discretization methods introduced in [IMA J. Numer. Anal., 33(1) (2013), pp. 242-260] by R. Andreev and in [Comput. Methods Appl. Math., 15(4) (2015), pp. 551-566] by O. Steinbach.

Consider the electromagnetic scattering of a time-harmonic plane wave by an open cavity which is embedded in a perfectly electrically conducting infinite ground plane. This paper is concerned with the numerical solutions of the transverse electric an d magnetic polarizations of the open cavity scattering problems. In each polarization, the scattering problem is reduced equivalently into a boundary value problem of the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation in a bounded domain by using the transparent boundary condition (TBC). An a posteriori estimate based adaptive finite element method with the perfectly matched layer (PML) technique is developed to solve the reduced problem. The estimate takes account both of the finite element approximation error and the PML truncation error, where the latter is shown to decay exponentially with respect to the PML medium parameter and the thickness of the PML layer. Numerical experiments are presented and compared with the adaptive finite element TBC method for both polarizations to illustrate the competitive behavior of the proposed method.
