In this article we exploit Ruelle-type spectral functions and analyze the Verma module over Virasoro algebra, boson-fermion correspondence, the analytic torsion, the Chern-Simons and $eta$ invariants, as well as the generation function associated to dimensions of the Hochschild homology of the crossed product $mathbb{C}[S_n]ltimes mathcal{A}^{otimes n}$ ($mathcal{A}$ is the $q$-Weyl algebra). After analysing the Chern-Simons and $eta$ invariants of Dirac operators by using irreducible $SU(n)$-flat connections on locally symmetric manifolds of non-positive section curvature, we describe the exponential action for the Chern-Simons theory.

We discuss the homological aspects of the connection between quantum string generating function and the formal power series associated to the dimensions of chains and homologies of suitable Lie algebras. Our analysis can be considered as a new straig htforward application of the machinery of modular forms and spectral functions (with values in the congruence subgroup of $SL(2,{mathbb Z})$) to the partition functions of Lagrangian branes, refined vertex and open string partition functions, represented by means of formal power series that encode Lie algebra properties. The common feature in our examples lies in the modular properties of the characters of certain representations of the pertinent affine Lie algebras and in the role of Selberg-type spectral functions of an hyperbolic three-geometry associated with $q$-series in the computation of the string amplitudes.
We revisit the definition of the 6j-symbols from the modular double of U_q(sl(2,R)), referred to as b-6j symbols. Our new results are (i) the identification of particularly natural normalization conditions, and (ii) new integral representations for t his object. This is used to briefly discuss possible applications to quantum hyperbolic geometry, and to the study of certain supersymmetric gauge theories. We show, in particular, that the b-6j symbol has leading semiclassical asymptotics given by the volume of a non-ideal tetrahedron. We furthermore observe a close relation with the problem to quantize natural Darboux coordinates for moduli spaces of flat connections on Riemann surfaces related to the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. Our new integral representations finally indicate a possible interpretation of the b-6j symbols as partition functions of three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories.
We analyse the role of vertex operator algebra and 2d amplitudes from the point of view of the representation theory of infinite dimensional Lie algebras, MacMahon and Ruelle functions. A p-dimensional MacMahon function is the generating function of p-dimensional partitions of integers. These functions can be represented as amplitudes of a two-dimensional c=1 CFT. In this paper we show that p-dimensional MacMahon functions can be rewritten in terms of Ruelle spectral functions, whose spectrum is encoded in the Patterson-Selberg function of three dimensional hyperbolic geometry.

We give an explicit differential equation which is expected to determine the instanton partition function in the presence of the full surface operator in N=2 SU(N) gauge theory. The differential equation arises as a quantization of a certain Hamilton ian system of isomonodromy type discovered by Fuji, Suzuki and Tsuda.
The Picard-Fuchs equation is a powerful mathematical tool which has numerous applications in physics, for it allows to evaluate integrals without resorting to direct integration techniques. We use this equation to calculate both the classical action and the higher-order WKB corrections to it, for the sextic double-well potential and the Lame potential. Our development rests on the fact that the Picard-Fuchs method links an integral to solutions of a differential equation with the energy as a parameter. Employing the same argument we show that each higher-order correction in the WKB series for the quantum action is a combination of the classical action and its derivatives. From this, we obtain a computationally simple method of calculating higher-order quantum-mechanical corrections to the classical action, and demonstrate this by calculating the second-order correction for the sextic and the Lame potential. This paper also serves as a self-consistent guide to the use of the Picard-Fuchs equation.
