We investigate the ground states of spin models defined on networks that we imprint (e.g. non-complex random networks like Erdos-Renyi or complex networks like Watts-Strogatz, and Barabasi-Albert), and their response to decohering processes which we model with network attacks. We quantify the complexity of these ground states, and their response to the attacks, by calculating distributions of network measures of an emergent network whose link weights are the pairwise mutual information between spins. We focus on attacks which projectively measure spins. We find that the emergent networks in the ground state do not satisfy the usual criteria for complexity, and their average properties are captured well by a single dimensionless parameter in the Hamiltonian. While the response of classical networks to attacks is well-studied, where classical complex networks are known to be more robust to random attacks than random networks, we find counterintuitive results for our quantum networks. We find that the ground states for Hamiltonians defined on different classes of imprinted networks respond similarly to all our attacks, and the attacks rescale the average properties of the emergent network by a constant factor. Mean field theory explains these results for relatively dense networks, but we also find the simple rescaling behavior away from the regime of validity of mean field theory. Our calculations indicate that complex spin networks are not more robust to projective measurement attacks, and presumably also other quantum attacks, than non-complex spin networks, in contrast to the classical case. Understanding the response of the spin networks to decoherence and attacks will have applications in understanding the physics of open quantum systems, and in designing robust complex quantum systems, possibly even a robust quantum Internet in the long run, that is maximally resistant to decoherence.

The approach to equilibrium is studied for long-range quantum Ising models where the interaction strength decays like r^{-alpha} at large distances r with an exponent $alpha$ not exceeding the lattice dimension. For a large class of observables and i nitial states, the time evolution of expectation values can be calculated. We prove analytically that, at a given instant of time t and for sufficiently large system size N, the expectation value of some observable <A>(t) will practically be unchanged from its initial value <A>(0). This finding implies that, for large enough N, equilibration effectively occurs on a time scale beyond the experimentally accessible one and will not be observed in practice.
We investigate bipartite entanglement in random quantum $XY$ models at equilibrium. Depending on the intrinsic time scales associated with equilibration of the random parameters and measurements associated with observation of the system, we consider two distinct kinds of disorder, namely annealed and quenched disorders. We conduct a comparative study of the effects of disorder on nearest-neighbor entanglement, when the nature of randomness changes from being annealed to quenched. We find that entanglement properties of the annealed and quenched disordered systems are drastically different from each other. This is realized by identifying the regions of parameter space in which the nearest-neighbor state is entangled, and the regions where a disorder-induced enhancement of entanglement $-$ order-from-disorder $-$ is obtained. We also analyze the response of the quantum phase transition point of the ordered system with the infusion of disorder.
We study high frequency response functions, notably the optical conductivity, in the vicinity of quantum critical points (QCPs) by allowing for both detuning from the critical coupling and finite temperature. We consider general dimensions and dynami cal exponents. This leads to a unified understanding of sum rules. In systems with emergent Lorentz invariance, powerful methods from conformal field theory allow us to fix the high frequency response in terms of universal coefficients. We test our predictions analytically in the large-N O(N) model and using the gauge-gravity duality, and numerically via Quantum Monte Carlo simulations on a lattice model hosting the interacting superfluid-insulator QCP. In superfluid phases, interacting Goldstone bosons qualitatively change the high frequency optical conductivity, and the corresponding sum rule.
Geometric quantum speed limits quantify the trade-off between the rate with which quantum states can change and the resources that are expended during the evolution. Counterdiabatic driving is a unique tool from shortcuts to adiabaticity to speed up quantum dynamics while completely suppressing nonequilibrium excitations. We show that the quantum speed limit for counterdiabatically driven systems undergoing quantum phase transitions fully encodes the Kibble-Zurek mechanism by correctly predicting the transition from adiabatic to impulse regimes. Our findings are demonstrated for three scenarios, namely the transverse field Ising, the Landau-Zener, and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models.
It is known that entanglement can be converted to work in quantum composite systems. In this paper we consider a quench protocol for two initially independent reservoirs $A$ and $B$ described by the quantum thermal states. For a free fermion model at low temperatures, the von Neumann entropy of each reservoir increases once the reservoirs are coupled. At the moment of decoupling there is an energy transfer to the system in the amount set by the von Neumann entropy accumulated during joint evolution of $A$ and $B$. This energy transfer appears as work produced by the quench to decouple the reservoirs. Once the reservoirs are disconnected, the information about their mutual correlations $-$ von Neumann entropy $-$ is stored in the energy increment of each reservoir. This result provides a possibility of a direct readout of quantum correlations at low temperature.
