The production of ultra-pure raw material is a crucial step to ensure the required background level in rare event searches. In this work, we establish an innovative technique developed to produce high-purity (99.999%) granular zinc. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the refining procedure by measuring the internal contaminations of the purified zinc with a high-purity germanium detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The total activity of cosmogenic activated nuclides is measured at the level of a few mBq/kg, as well as limits on naturally occurring radionuclides are set to less than mBq/kg. The excellent radiopurity of the zinc sample allows us to search for electron capture with positron emission and neutrinoless double electron capture of $^{64}$Zn, setting the currently most stringent lower limits on their half-lives, $T_{1/2}^{varepsilonbeta^+} > 2.7 times 10^{21}text{yr}$ (90% C.I.), and $T_{1/2}^{0 u2varepsilon}> 2.6 times 10^{21}text{yr}$ (90% C.I.), respectively.

CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project searching for neutrino-less double beta decay. In its first scientific run, CUPID-0 operated 26 ZnSe cryogenic calorimeters coupled to light detectors in the underground Labora tori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we analyzed a ZnSe exposure of 11.34 kg$times$yr to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{70}$Zn and for the neutrino-less positron-emitting electron capture of $^{64}$Zn. We found no evidence for these decays and set 90$%$ credible interval limits of ${rm T}_{1/2}^{0 ubetabeta}(^{70}{rm Zn}) > 1.6 times 10^{21}$ yr and ${rm T}_{1/2}^{0 u EC beta+}(^{64}{rm Zn}) > 1.2 times 10^{22}$ yr, surpassing by almost two orders of magnitude the previous experimental results
The R&D activity performed during the last years proved the potential of ZnSe scintillating bolometers to the search for neutrino-less double beta decay, motivating the realization of the first large-mass experiment based on this technology: CUPID-0. The isotopic enrichment in $^{82}$Se, the Zn$^{82}$Se crystals growth, as well as the light detectors production have been accomplished, and the experiment is now in construction at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). In this paper we present the results obtained testing the first three Zn$^{82}$Se crystals operated as scintillating bolometers, and we prove that their performance in terms of energy resolution, background rejection capability and intrinsic radio-purity complies with the requirements of CUPID-0.
The MAJORANA Collaboration is constructing the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, an ultra-low background, modular, HPGe detector array with a mass of 44.8-kg (29.7 kg enriched >88% in Ge-76) to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in Ge-76. The next genera tion of tonnescale Ge-based neutrinoless double beta decay searches will probe the neutrino mass scale in the inverted-hierarchy region. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is envisioned to demonstrate a path forward to achieve a background rate at or below 1 count/tonne/year in the 4 keV region of interest around the Q-value of 2039 keV. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR follows a modular implementation to be easily scalable to the next generation experiment. First data taken with the DEMONSTRATOR are introduced here.

High purity Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) crystals are produced starting from elemental Zn and Se to be used for the search of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0{ u}DBD) of 82Se. In order to increase the number of emitting nuclides, enriched 82Se is used. Dedicated production lines for the synthesis and conditioning of the Zn82Se powder in order to make it suitable for crystal growth were assembled compliant with radio-purity constraints specific to rare event physics experiments. Besides routine check of impurities concentration, high sensitivity measurements are made for radio-isotope concentrations in raw materials, reactants, consumables, ancillaries and intermediary products used for ZnSe crystals production. Indications are given on the crystals perfection and how it is achieved. Since very expensive isotopically enriched material (82Se) is used, a special attention is given for acquiring the maximum yield in the mass balance of all production stages. Production and certification protocols are presented and resulting ready-to-use Zn82Se crystals are described.

The AMoRE is an experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 100Mo in molybdate crystal scintillators using a cryogenic detection technique. The crystals are equipped with metallic magnetic calorimeter sensors that detect both phonon an d photon signals at temperatures of a few tens of mK. Simultaneous measurements of thermal and scintillation signals produced by particle interactions in the crystals by MMC sensors provide high energy resolution and efficient particle discrimination. AMoRE-Pilot, an R&D phase with six 48deplCa100MoO4 crystals and a total mass of ~1.9 kg in the final configuration, operated at the 700 m deep Yangyang underground laboratory (Y2L). After completion of the AMoRE-Pilot run at the end of 2018, AMoRE-I with a ~6 kg crystal array comprised of thirteen 48deplCa100MoO4 and five Li2100MoO4 crystals is currently being assembled and installed at Y2L. We have secured 110 kg of 100Mo-isotope-enriched MoO3 powder for the production of crystals for the AMoRE-II phase, which will have ~200 kg of molybdate crystals and operate at Yemilab, a new underground laboratory located ~1,100 m deep in the Handeok iron mine that is currently being excavated and with a scheduled completion date of December 2020. AMoRE-II is expected to improve the upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass to cover the entire inverted hierarchy neutrino mass region: 20-50 meV, in the case when no such decays are observed. Results from AMoRE-Pilot and progress of the preparations for AMoRE-I and AMoRE-II are presented.
