In this article, we are interested in the analysis and simulation of solutions to an optimal control problem motivated by population dynamics issues. In order to control the spread of mosquito-borne arboviruses, the population replacement technique consists in releasing into the environment mosquitoes infected with the Wolbachia bacterium, which greatly reduces the transmission of the virus to the humans. Spatial releases are then sought in such a way that the infected mosquito population invades the uninfected mosquito population. Assuming very high mosquito fecundity rates, we first introduce an asymptotic model on the proportion of infected mosquitoes and then an optimal control problem to determine the best spatial strategy to achieve these releases. We then analyze this problem, including the optimality of natural candidates and carry out first numerical simulations in one dimension of space to illustrate the relevance of our approach.

Vector control plays a central role in the fight against vector-borne diseases and, in particular, arboviruses. The use of the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia has proven effective in preventing the transmission of some of these viruses between mosq uitoes and humans, making it a promising control tool. The Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT) consists in replacing the wild population by a population carrying the aforementioned bacterium, thereby preventing outbreaks of the associated vector-borne diseases. In this work, we consider a two species model incorporating both Wolbachia infected and wild mosquitoes. Our system can be controlled thanks to a term representing an artificial introduction of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes. Under the assumption that the birth rate of mosquitoes is high, we may reduce the model to a simpler one on the proportion of infected mosquitoes. We investigate minimal cost-time strategies to achieve a population replacement both analytically and numerically for the simplified 1D model and only numerically for the full 2D system
Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of many diseases such as dengue fever, zika or chigungunya. One way to control the spread of these diseases is to use the sterile insect technique (SIT), which consists in a massive release of sterilize d male mosquitoes. This strategy aims at reducing the total population over time, and has the advantage being specific to the targeted species, unlike the use of pesticides. In this article, we study the optimal release strategies in order to maximize the efficiency of this technique. We consider simplified models that describe the dynamics of eggs, males, females and sterile males in order to optimize the release protocol. We determine in a precise way optimal strategies, which allows us to tackle numerically the underlying optimization problem in a very simple way. We also present some numerical simulations to illustrate our results.
We investigate an optimal control problem which arises in the optimization of an amplification technique for misfolded proteins. The improvement of this technique may play a role in the detection of prion diseases. The model consists in a linear syst em of differential equations with a nonlinear control. The appearance of oscillations in the numerical simulations is understood by using the Perron and Floquet eigenvalue theory for nonnegative irreductible matrices. Then to overcome the unsolvability of the optimal control, we relax the problem. In the two dimensional case we solve explicitely the optimal relaxed control problem when the final time is large enough.
We propose a novel Bayesian method to solve the maximization of a time-dependent expensive-to-evaluate stochastic oracle. We are interested in the decision that maximizes the oracle at a finite time horizon, given a limited budget of noisy evaluation s of the oracle that can be performed before the horizon. Our recursive two-step lookahead acquisition function for Bayesian optimization makes nonmyopic decisions at every stage by maximizing the expected utility at the specified time horizon. Specifically, we propose a generalized two-step lookahead framework with a customizable emph{value} function that allows users to define the utility. We illustrate how lookahea
In this paper we consider the so-called procedure of {it Continuous Steiner Symmetrization}, introduced by Brock in cite{bro95,bro00}. It transforms every domain $Omegasubsetsubsetmathbb{R}^d$ into the ball keeping the volume fixed and letting the fi rst eigenvalue and the torsion respectively decrease and increase. While this does not provide, in general, a $gamma$-continuous map $tmapstoOmega_t$, it can be slightly modified so to obtain the $gamma$-continuity for a $gamma$-dense class of domains $Omega$, namely, the class of polyedral sets in $mathbb{R}^d$. This allows to obtain a sharp characterization of the Blaschke-Santalo diagram of torsion and eigenvalue.
