We study the quantum dissipative Duffing oscillator across a range of system sizes and environmental couplings under varying semiclassical approximations. Using spatial (based on Kullback-Leibler distances between phase-space attractors) and temporal (Lyapunov exponent-based) complexity metrics, we isolate the effect of the environment on quantum-classical differences. Moreover, we quantify the system sizes where quantum dynamics cannot be simulated using semiclassical or noise-added classical approximations. Remarkably, we find that a parametrically invariant meta-attractor emerges at a specific length scale and noise-added classical models deviate strongly from quantum dynamics below this scale. Our findings also generalize the previous surprising result that classically regular orbits can have the greatest quantum-classical differences in the semiclassical regime. In particular, we show that the dynamical growth of quantum-classical differences is not determined by the degree of classical chaos.

Periodic forcing of nonlinear oscillators generates a rich and complex variety of behaviors, ranging from regular to chaotic behavior. In this work we seek to control, i.e., either suppress or generate, the chaotic behavior of a classical reference e xample in books or introductory articles, the Duffing oscillator. For this purpose, we propose an elegant strategy consisting of simply adjusting the shape of the time-dependent forcing. The efficiency of the proposed strategy is shown analytically, numerically and experimentally. In addition due to its simplicity and low cost such a work could easily be turned into an excellent teaching tool.
The continuous monitoring of a quantum system strongly influences the emergence of chaotic dynamics near the transition from the quantum regime to the classical regime. Here we present a feedback control scheme that uses adaptive measurement techniqu es to control the degree of chaos in the driven-damped quantum Duffing oscillator. This control relies purely on the measurement backaction on the system, making it a uniquely quantum control, and is only possible due to the sensitivity of chaos to measurement. We quantify the effectiveness of our control by numerically computing the quantum Lyapunov exponent over a wide range of parameters. We demonstrate that adaptive measurement techniques can control the onset of chaos in the system, pushing the quantum-classical boundary further into the quantum regime.
We treat the double well quantum oscillator from the standpoint of the Ehrenfest equation but in a manner different from Pattanayak and Schieve. We show that for short times there can be chaotic motion due to quantum fluctuations, but over sufficiently long times the behaviour is normal.
Quantum spin liquids have been at the forefront of correlated electron research ever since their original proposal in 1973, and the realization that they belong to the broader class of intrinsic topological orders, along with the fractional quantum H all states. According to received wisdom, quantum spin liquids can arise in frustrated magnets with low spin $S$, where strong quantum fluctuations act to destabilize conventional, magnetically ordered states. Here we present a magnet that has a $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid ground state already in the semiclassical, large-$S$ limit. The state has both topological and symmetry related ground state degeneracy, and two types of gaps, a `magnetic flux gap that scales linearly with $S$ and an `electric charge gap that drops exponentially in $S$. The magnet is described by the spin-$S$ version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev honeycomb model, which has been the subject of intense studies in correlated electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling, and in optical lattice realizations with ultracold atoms. The results apply to both integer and half-integer spins.
The interaction among the components of a hybrid quantum system is often neglected when considering the coupling of these components to an environment. However, if the interaction strength is large, this approximation leads to unphysical predictions, as has been shown for cavity-QED and optomechanical systems in the ultrastrong-coupling regime. To deal with these cases, master equations with dissipators retaining the interaction between these components have been derived for the quantum Rabi model and for the standard optomechanical Hamiltonian. In this article, we go beyond these previous derivations and present a general master equation approach for arbitrary hybrid quantum systems interacting with thermal reservoirs. Specifically, our approach can be applied to describe the dynamics of open hybrid systems with harmonic, quasi-harmonic, and anharmonic transitions. We apply our approach to study the influence of temperature on multiphoton vacuum Rabi oscillations in circuit QED. We also analyze the influence of temperature on the conversion of mechanical energy into photon pairs in an optomechanical system, which has been recently described at zero temperature. We compare our results with previous approaches, finding that these sometimes overestimate decoherence rates and understimate excited-state populations.
