We present a critical overview comparing theoretical predictions and measurements of Van der Waals dispersion forces in media on the basis of the respective Hamaker constants. To quantify the agreement, we complement the reported experimental errors with those for the theoretical predictions, which are due to uncertainties in the underlying spectroscopic data. Our main finding is that the theoretical errors are often larger than their experimental counterparts. Within these uncertainties, the comparison confirms the standard Lifshitz theory based on the Abraham electromagnetic stress tensor against the recently suggested alternative account on the basis of the Maxwell stress tensor.

A version of the Greens functions theory of the Van der Waals forces which can be conveniently used in the presence of spatial dispersion is presented. The theory is based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and is valid for interacting bodies, se parated by vacuum. Objections against theories acounting for the spatial dispersion are discussed.
The nonlocal correlation energy in the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004); Phys. Rev. B 76, 125112 (2007); Phys. Rev. B 89, 035412 (2014)] can be interpreted in terms of a coupling of zero-point energ ies of characteristic modes of semilocal exchange-correlation (xc) holes. These xc holes reflect the internal functional in the framework of the vdW-DF method [Phys. Rev. B 82, 081101(2010)]. We explore the internal xc hole components, showing that they share properties with those of the generalized-gradient approximation. We use these results to illustrate the nonlocality in the vdW-DF description and analyze the vdW-DF formulation of nonlocal correlation.
We present an approach for modeling nanoscale wetting and dewetting of liquid surfaces that exploits recently developed, sophisticated techniques for computing van der Waals (vdW) or (more generally) Casimir forces in arbitrary geometries. We solve t he variational formulation of the Young--Laplace equation to predict the equilibrium shapes of fluid--vacuum interfaces near solid gratings and show that the non-additivity of vdW interactions can have a significant impact on the shape and wetting properties of the liquid surface, leading to very different surface profiles and wetting transitions compared to predictions based on commonly employed additive approximations, such as Hamaker or Derjaguin approximations.
Atomically-thin layers of two-dimensional materials can be assembled in vertical stacks held together by relatively weak van der Waals forces, allowing for coupling between monolayer crystals with incommensurate lattices and arbitrary mutual rotation . A profound consequence of using these degrees of freedom is the emergence of an overarching periodicity in the local atomic registry of the constituent crystal structures, known as a moire superlattice. Its presence in graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) structures led to the observation of electronic minibands, whereas its effect enhanced by interlayer resonant conditions in twisted graphene bilayers culminated in the observation of the superconductor-insulator transition at magic twist angles. Here, we demonstrate that, in semiconducting heterostructures built of incommensurate MoSe2 and WS2 monolayers, excitonic bands can hybridise, resulting in the resonant enhancement of the moire superlattice effects. MoSe2 and WS2 are specifically chosen for the near degeneracy of their conduction band edges to promote the hybridisation of intra- and interlayer excitons, which manifests itself through a pronounced exciton energy shift as a periodic function of the interlayer rotation angle. This occurs as hybridised excitons (hX) are formed by holes residing in MoSe2 bound to a twist-dependent superposition of electron states in the adjacent monolayers. For heterostructures with almost aligned pairs of monolayer crystals, resonant mixing of the electron states leads to pronounced effects of the heterostructures geometrical moire pattern on the hX dispersion and optical spectrum. Our findings underpin novel strategies for band-structure engineering in semiconductor devices based on van der Waals heterostructures.
We report on the direct measurement in real space of the effect of the van der Waals forces between individual Rydberg atoms on their external degrees of freedom. Clusters of Rydberg atoms with inter-particle distances of around 5 {mu}m are created b y first generating a small number of seed excitations in a magneto-optical trap, followed by off-resonant excitation that leads to a chain of facilitated excitation events. After a variable expansion time the Rydberg atoms are field ionized, and from the arrival time distributions the size of the Rydberg cluster after expansion is calculated. Our experimental results agree well with a numerical simulation of the van der Waals explosion.
