The quasi two-dimensional Mott insulator $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is proximate to the sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). In a layer of $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ on graphene the dominant Kitaev exchange is further enhanced by strain. Recently, quantum oscillation (QO) measurements of such $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ / graphene heterostructures showed an anomalous temperature dependence beyond the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) description. Here, we develop a theory of anomalous QO in an effective Kitaev-Kondo lattice model in which the itinerant electrons of the graphene layer interact with the correlated magnetic layer via spin interactions. At low temperatures a heavy Fermi liquid emerges such that the neutral Majorana fermion excitations of the Kitaev QSL acquire charge by hybridising with the graphene Dirac band. Using ab-initio calculations to determine the parameters of our low energy model we provide a microscopic theory of anomalous QOs with a non-LK temperature dependence consistent with our measurements. We show how remnants of fractionalized spin excitations can give rise to characteristic signatures in QO experiments.

We study the influence of spin on the quantum interference of interacting electrons in a single-channel disordered quantum wire within the framework of the Luttinger liquid (LL) model. The nature of the electron interference in a spinful LL is partic ularly nontrivial because the elementary bosonic excitations that carry charge and spin propagate with different velocities. We extend the functional bosonization approach to treat the fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom in a disordered spinful LL on an equal footing. We analyze the effect of spin-charge separation at finite temperature both on the spectral properties of single-particle fermionic excitations and on the conductivity of a disordered quantum wire. We demonstrate that the notion of weak localization, related to the interference of multiple-scattered electron waves and their decoherence due to electron-electron scattering, remains applicable to the spin-charge separated system. The relevant dephasing length, governed by the interplay of electron-electron interaction and spin-charge separation, is found to be parametrically shorter than in a spinless LL. We calculate both the quantum (weak localization) and classical (memory effect) corrections to the conductivity of a disordered spinful LL. The classical correction is shown to dominate in the limit of high temperature.
We report the observation of a quantum anomalous Hall effect in twisted bilayer graphene showing Hall resistance quantized to within .1% of the von Klitzing constant $h/e^2$ at zero magnetic field. The effect is driven by intrinsic strong correlations , which polarize the electron system into a single spin and valley resolved moire miniband with Chern number $C=1$. In contrast to extrinsic, magnetically doped systems, the measured transport energy gap $Delta/k_Bapprox 27$~K is larger than the Curie temperature for magnetic ordering $T_Capprox 9$~K, and Hall quantization persists to temperatures of several Kelvin. Remarkably, we find that electrical currents as small as 1~nA can be used to controllably switch the magnetic order between states of opposite polarization, forming an electrically rewritable magnetic memory.
Quantum matter provides an effective vacuum out of which arise emergent particles not corresponding to any experimentally detected elementary particle. Topological quantum materials in particular have become a focus of intense research in part becaus e of the remarkable possibility to realize Majorana fermions, with their potential for new, decoherence-free quantum computing architectures. In this paper we undertake a study on high-quality single crystal of $alpha-RuCl_3$ which has been identified as a material realizing a proximate Kitaev state, a topological quantum state with magnetic Majorana fermions. Four-dimensional tomographic reconstruction of dynamical correlations measured using neutrons is uniquely powerful for probing such magnetic states. We discover unusual signals, including an unprecedented column of scattering over a large energy interval around the Brillouin zone center which is remarkably stable with temperature. This is straightforwardly accounted for in terms of the Majorana excitations present in Kitaevs topological quantum spin liquid. Other, more delicate, features in the scattering can be transparently associated with perturbations to an ideal model. This opens a window on emergent magnetic Majorana fermions in correlated materials.
Quantum spin liquids are long-range entangled states of matter with emergent gauge fields and fractionalized excitations. While candidate materials, such as the Kitaev honeycomb ruthenate $alpha$-RuCl$_3$, show magnetic order at low temperatures $T$, here we demonstrate numerically a dynamical crossover from magnon-like behavior at low $T$ and frequencies $omega$ to long-lived fractionalized fermionic quasiparticles at higher $T$ and $omega$. This crossover is akin to the presence of spinon continua in quasi-1D spin chains. It is further shown to go hand in hand with persistent typicality down to very low $T$. This aspect, which has also been observed in the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet, is a signature of proximate spin liquidity and emergent gauge degrees of freedom more generally, and can be the basis for the numerical study of many finite-$T$ properties of putative spin liquids.

We provide the first evidence for coherence and Rabi oscillations of spin-solitons pinned by the local breaking of translational symmetry in isotropic Heisenberg chains (simple antiferromagnetic-N{e}el or spin-Peierls).We show that these correlated s pin systems made of hundreds of coupled spin bear an overall spin S=1/2 and can be manipulated as a single spin. This is clearly contrary to all known spin-qubits which are paramagnetic centres, highly diluted to prevent decoherence. These results offer an alternative approach for spin-qubits paving the way for the implementation of a new type of quantum computer.
