The discovery of multiple coexisting magnetic phases in a crystallographically homogeneous compound Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$ has stimulated an ongoing research activity. In recent years the main focus has been on the zero field state properties, where exceedingly long time scales have been established. In this study we report a detailed investigation of static and dynamic properties of Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$ across the magnetic field induced transition around 3.5 T. This region has so far been practically neglected while we argue that in some aspects it represents a simpler version of the transition across the $B = 0$ state. Investigating the frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility we reveal that on the high field side ($B > 3.5$ T) the response corresponds to a relatively narrow distribution of magnetic clusters. The distribution appears very weakly dependent on magnetic field, with an associated energy barrier of around 200 K. Below 3.5 T a second contribution arises, with much smaller characteristic frequencies and a strong temperature and magnetic field dependence. We discuss these findings in the context of intra-chain and inter-chain clustering of magnetic moments.

Using powder neutron diffraction we have discovered an unusual magnetic order-order transition in the Ising spin chain compound Ca3Co2O6. On lowering the temperature an antiferromagnetic phase with propagation vector k=(0.5,-0.5,1) emerges from a hig her temperature spin density wave structure with k=(0, 0, 1.01). This transition occurs over an unprecedented time-scale of several hours and is never complete.
The metal-insulator transition (MIT) of BaVS3 is suppressed under pressure and above the critical pressure of p~2GPa the metallic phase is stabilized. We present the results of detailed magnetoresistivity measurements carried out at pressures near th e critical value, in magnetic fields up to B=12T. We found that slightly below the critical pressure the structural tetramerization -- which drives the MIT -- is combined with the onset of magnetic correlations. If the zero-field transition temperature is suppressed to a sufficiently low value (T_MI<15K), the system can be driven into the metallic state by application of magnetic field. The main effect is not the reduction of T_MI with increasing B, but rather the broadening of the transition due to the applied magnetic field. We tentatively ascribe this phenomenon to the influence on the magnetic structure coupled to the bond-order of the tetramers.

We derive, by means of an extended Gutzwiller wavefunction and within the Gutzwiller approximation, the phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model. We find that generically, namely in the absence of nesting, the model displays an $f$-electron Mott loca lization accompanied by a discontinuous change of the conduction electron Fermi surface as well as by magnetism. When the non interacting Fermi surface is close to nesting, the Mott localization disentangles from the onset of magnetism. First the paramagnetic heavy fermion metal turns continuously into an itinerant magnet - the Fermi surface evolves smoothly across the transition - and afterwards Mott localization intervenes with a discontinuous rearrangement of the Fermi surface. We find that the $f$-electron localization remains even if magnetism is prevented, and is still accompanied by a sharp transfer of spectral weigth at the Fermi energy within the Brillouin zone. We further show that the Mott localization can be also induced by an external magnetic field, in which case it occurs concomitantly with a metamagnetic transition.
We study vanadium spinels $A$V$_2$O$_4$ ($A$ = Cd, Mg) in pulsed magnetic fields up to 65 T. A jump in magnetization at $mu_0 H approx$ 40 T is observed in the single-crystal MgV$_2$O$_4$, indicating a field induced quantum phase transition between t wo distinct magnetic orders. In the multiferroic CdV$_2$O$_4$, the field-induced transition is accompanied by a suppression of the electric polarization. By modeling the magnetic properties in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling characteristic of vanadium spinels, we show that both features of the field-induced transition can be successfully explained by including the effects of the local trigonal crystal field.
We utilize near-infrared pump and mid-infrared probe spectroscopy to investigate the ultrafast electronic response of pressurized VO$_2$. Distinct pump-probe signals and a pumping threshold behavior are observed even in the pressure-induced metallic state showing a noticeable amount of localized electronic states. Our results are consistent with a scenario of a bandwidth-controlled Mott-Hubbard transition.
