Spin is a fundamental yet somewhat enigmatic intrinsic angular-momentum property of quantum particles or fields, which appears within relativistic field theories. The spin density in wave fields is described by the theoretical Belinfante-Rosenfeld construction based on the difference between the canonical and kinetic energy-momentum tensors. These quantities have an abstract mathematical character and are usually considered as non-observable per se. Here we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that the Belinfante-Rosenfeld construction naturally arises in purely classical gravity (water surface) waves. There, the canonical momentum is associated with the generalized Stokes-drift phenomenon, while the spin is generated by subwavelength circular motion of water particles in inhomogeneous wave fields. Thus, we reveal the canonical spin and momentum in water waves and directly observe these fundamental relativistic field-theory properties as microscopic mechanical properties of particles in a classical wave system. Our findings shed light onto the nature of spin and momentum in wave fields, demonstrate the universality of field-theory concepts, and offer a new platform for studies of previously hidden aspects of quantum-relativistic physics.

We show that polarization singularities, generic for any complex vector field but so far mostly studied for electromagnetic fields, appear naturally in inhomogeneous yet monochromatic sound and water-surface (e.g., gravity or capillary) wave fields i n fluids or gases. The vector properties of these waves are described by the velocity or displacement fields characterizing the local oscillatory motion of the medium particles. We consider a number of examples revealing C-points of purely circular polarization and polarization M{o}bius strips (formed by major axes of polarization ellipses) around the C-points in sound and gravity wave fields. Our results (i) offer a new readily accessible platform for studies of polarization singularities and topological features of complex vector wavefields and (ii) can play an important role in characterizing vector (e.g., dipole) wave-matter interactions in acoustics and fluid mechanics.
We demonstrate that the acoustic spin of a first-order Bessel beam can be transferred to a subwavelength (prolate) spheroidal particle at the beam axis in a viscous fluid. The induced radiation torque is proportional to the acoustic spin, which scale s with the beam energy density. The analysis of the particle rotational dynamics in a Stokes flow regime reveals that its angular velocity varies linearly with the acoustic spin. Asymptotic expressions of the radiation torque and angular velocity are obtained for a quasispherical and infinitely thin particle. Excellent agreement is found between the theoretical results of radiation torque and finite element simulations. The induced particle spin is predicted and analyzed using the typical parameter values of the acoustical vortex tweezer and levitation devices. We discuss how the beam energy density and fluid viscosity can be assessed by measuring the induced spin of the particle.

When a $(1+1)$-dimensional nonlinear PDE in real function $eta(x,t)$ admits localized traveling solutions we can consider $L$ to be the average width of the envelope, $A$ the average value of the amplitude of the envelope, and $V$ the group velocity of such a solution. The replacement rule (RR or nonlinear dispersion relation) procedure is able to provide a simple qualitative relation between these three parameters, without actually solve the equation. Examples are provided from KdV, C-H and BBM equations, but the procedure appears to be almost universally valid for such $(1+1)$-dimensional nonlinear PDE and their localized traveling solutions cite{3}.

It is suggested that the propagation of the action potential is accompanied by an axoplasmic pressure pulse propagating in the axoplasm along the axon length. The pressure pulse stretch-modulates voltage-gated Na (Nav) channels embedded in the axon m embrane, causing their accelerated activation and inactivation and increasing peak channel conductance. As a result, the action potential propagates due to mechano-electrical activation of Nav channels by straggling ionic currents and the axoplasmic pressure pulse. The velocity of such propagation is higher than in the classical purely electrical Nav activation mechanism, and it may be close to the velocity of propagation of pressure pulses in the axoplasm. Extracellular Ca ions influxing during the voltage spike, or Ca ions released from intracellular stores, may trigger a mechanism that generates and augments the pressure pulse, thus opposing its viscous decay. The model can potentially explain a number of phenomena that are not contained within the purely electrical Hodgkin-Huxley-type framework: the Meyer-Overton rule for the effectiveness of anesthetics, as well as various mechanical, optical and thermodynamic phenomena accompanying the action potential. It is shown that the velocity of propagation of axoplasmic pressure pulses is close to the measured velocity of the nerve impulse, both in absolute magnitude and in dependence on axon diameter, degree of myelination and temperature.

A decomposition of the angular momentum of the classical electromagnetic field into orbital and spin components that is manifestly gauge invariant and general has been obtained. This is done by decomposing the electric field into its longitudinal and transverse parts by means of the Helmholtz theorem. The orbital and spin components of the angular momentum of any specified electromagnetic field can be found from this prescription.
