Radiative and non-radiative electron spin flip probabilities are analysed in both plane wave and focussed laser backgrounds. We provide a simple and physically transparent description of spin dynamics in plane waves, and demonstrate that there exists a kinematic regime in which the usual leading order perturbative hierarchy of QED is reversed, and non-radiative loop effects dominate over radiative tree-level spin-flips. We show that while this loop-dominance becomes suppressed in focussed laser pulses due to a high sensitivity to field geometry, there is nevertheless a regime in which, in principle, loop effects on spin transitions can be discerned.

The interaction of charged particles and photons with intense electromagnetic fields gives rise to multi-photon Compton and Breit-Wheeler processes. These are usually described in the framework of the external field approximation, where the electroma gnetic field is assumed to have infinite energy. However, the multi-photon nature of these processes implies the absorption of a significant number of photons, which scales as the external field amplitude cubed. As a result, the interaction of a highly charged electron bunch with an intense laser pulse can lead to significant depletion of the laser pulse energy, thus rendering the external field approximation invalid. We provide relevant estimates for this depletion and find it to become important in the interaction between fields of amplitude $a_0 sim 10^3$ and electron bunches with charges of the order of 10 nC.
The effects of high-temperature, dense systems, and strong magnetic fields on Quantum Chromodynamics related phenomena are studied in different perspectives: in the high-temperature and densities, the QCD-phase diagram from the Linear Sigma Model poi nt of view is computed. In particular, the CEP location and transition lines for chiral restoration were found. In the intense magnetic fields and high-gluon density, the gluon fusion and gluon splitting channels are proposed as new photon production sources to better explain the experimental data in the so-called photon puzzle. Finally, the thermal and magnetic screening properties for gluons encoded into the polarization tensor were addressed in terms of the Debye mass.
We consider the absorption of probe photons by electrons in the presence of an intense, pulsed, background field. Our analysis reveals an interplay between regularisation and gauge invariance which distinguishes absorption from its crossing-symmetric processes, as well as a physical interpretation of absorption in terms of degenerate processes in the weak field limit. In the strong field limit we develop a locally constant field approximation (LCFA) for absorption which also exhibits new features. We benchmark the LCFA against exact analytical calculations and explore its regime of validity. Pulse shape effects are also investigated, as well as infra-red and collinear limits of the absorption process.

Rapid-advancing intense laser technologies enable the possibility of a direct laser-nucleus coupling. In this paper the effect of intense laser fields on a series of nuclear fission processes, including proton decay, alpha decay, and cluster decay, i s theoretically studied with the help of nuclear double folding potentials. The results show that the half-lives of these decay processes can be modified by non-negligible amounts, for example on the order of 0.01 or 0.1 percents in intense laser fields available in the forthcoming years. In addition to numerical results, an approximate analytical formula is derived to connect the laser-induced modification to the decay half-life and the decay energy.
We describe a new mechanism - radiatively-induced gravitational leptogenesis - for generating the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. We show how quantum loop effects in C and CP violating theories cause matter and antimatter to propagate di fferently in the presence of gravity, and prove this is forbidden in flat space by CPT and translation symmetry. This generates a curvature-dependent chemical potential for leptons, allowing a matter-antimatter asymmetry to be generated in thermal equilibrium in the early Universe. The time-dependent dynamics necessary for leptogenesis is provided by the interaction of the virtual self-energy cloud of the leptons with the expanding curved spacetime background, which violates the strong equivalence principle and allows a distinction between matter and antimatter. We show here how this mechanism is realised in a particular BSM theory, the see-saw model, where the quantum loops involve the heavy sterile neutrinos responsible for light neutrino masses. We demonstrate by explicit computation of the relevant two-loop Feynman diagrams how these radiative corrections display the necessary dependence on the sterile neutrino masses to generate an asymmetry, and show how the induced lepton asymmetry may be sufficiently large to play an important role in determining the baryon-to-photon ratio of the Universe.
