Using new VLT/XShooter spectral observations we analyse the physical properties of five z~0.3-0.4 confirmed LyC leakers. Strong resonant MgII 2796,2803 emission lines (I(2796,2803)/I(Hbeta)=10-38 per cent) and non-resonant FeII* 2612,2626 emission lines are observed in spectra of five and three galaxies, respectively. We find high electron densities Ne~400cm-3, significantly higher than in typical low-z, but comparable to those measured in z~2-3 star-forming galaxies. The galaxies have a mean value of logN/O=-1.16, close to the maximum values found for star-forming (SF) galaxies in the metallicity range of 12+logO/H=7.7-8.1. All 11 low-z LyC emitting galaxies found by Izotov et al. (2016, 2018), including the ones considered in the present study, are characterised by high EW(Hbeta)~200-400A, high ionisation parameter (log(U)=-2.5 to -1.7), high average ionising photon production efficiency xi= 10^{25.54} Hz erg-1 and hard ionising radiation. On the BPT diagram we find the same offset of our leakers from low-$z$ main-sequence SFGs as that for local analogues of LBGs and extreme SF galaxies at z~2-3. We confirm the effectiveness of the HeI emission lines diagnostics proposed by Izotov et al. (2017) in searching for LyC leaker candidates and find that their intensity ratios correspond to those in a median with low neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)=10^{17}-5x10^{17} cm-2 that permit leakage of LyC radiation, likely due to their density-bounded HII regions.

We describe the execution and data reduction of the European Southern Observatory Large Programme Quasars and their absorption lines: a legacy survey of the high-redshift universe with VLT/XSHOOTER (hereafter `XQ-100). XQ-100 has produced and made pu blicly available an homogeneous and high-quality sample of echelle spectra of 100 QSOs at redshifts z~3.5-4.5 observed with full spectral coverage from 315 to 2500 nm at a resolving power ranging from R~4000 to 7000, depending on wavelength. The median signal-to-noise ratios are 33, 25 and 43, as measured at rest-frame wavelengths 1700, 3000 and 3600 Angstrom, respectively. This paper provides future users of XQ-100 data with the basic statistics of the survey, along with details of target selection, data acquisition and data reduction. The paper accompanies the public release of all data products, including 100 reduced spectra. XQ-100 is the largest spectroscopic survey to date of high-redshift QSOs with simultaneous rest-frame UV/optical coverage, and as such enables a wide range of extragalactic research, from cosmology and galaxy evolution to AGN astrophysics.

We have recently discovered five Lyman continuum leaking galaxies at z~0.3, selected for their compactness, intense star-formation, and high [OIII]/[OII] ratio (Izotov et al. 2016ab). Here we derive their ionizing photon production efficiency, a fund amental quantity for inferring the number of photons available to reionize the Universe, for the first time for galaxies with confirmed strong Lyman continuum escape (fesc~6-13%). We find an ionizing photon production per unit UV luminosity, which is a factor 2-6 times higher than the canonical value when reported to their observed UV luminosity. After correction for extinction this value is close to the canonical value. The properties of our five Lyman continuum leakers are found to be very similar to those of the confirmed z=3.218 leaker Ion2 from de Barros et al. (2016) and very similar to those of typical star-forming galaxies at z>~6. Our results suggest that UV bright galaxies at high-z such as Lyman break galaxies can be Lyman continuum leakers and that their contribution to cosmic reionization may be underestimated.
We study the morphological and structural properties of the host galaxies associated with 57 optically-selected luminous type 2 AGN at $zsim$0.3-0.4: 16 high-luminosity Seyfert 2 (HLSy2, 8.0$le$log($L_{rm [OIII]}/L_{odot})<$8.3) and 41 obscured quasa rs (QSO2, log($L_{rm [OIII]}/L_{odot})ge$8.3). With this work, the total number of QSO2 at $z<1$ with parametrized galaxies increases from $sim$35 to 76. Our analysis is based on HST WFPC2 and ACS images that we fit with {sc GALFIT}. HLSy2 and QSO2 show a wide diversity of galaxy hosts. The main difference lies in the higher incidence of highly-disturbed systems among QSO2. This is consistent with a scenario in which galaxy interactions are the dominant mechanism triggering nuclear activity at the highest AGN power. There is a strong dependence of galaxy properties with AGN power (assuming $L_ {rm [OIII]}$ is an adequate proxy). The relative contribution of the spheroidal component to the total galaxy light (B/T) increases with $L_ {rm [OIII]}$. While systems dominated by the spheoridal component spread across the total range of $L_ {rm [OIII]}$, most disk-dominated galaxies concentrate at log($L_{rm [OIII]}/L_{odot})<$8.6. This is expected if more powerful AGN are powered by more massive black holes which are hosted by more massive bulges or spheroids. The average galaxy sizes ($langle r_{rm e} rangle$) are 5.0$pm$1.5 kpc for HLSy2 and 3.9$pm$0.6 kpc for HLSy2 and QSO2 respectively. These are significantly smaller than those found for QSO1 and narrow line radio galaxies at similar $z$. We put the results of our work in context of related studies of AGN with quasar-like luminosities.
We present and analyse integral-field observations of six type-II QSOs with z=0.3-0.4, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Two of our sample are found to be surrounded by a nebula of warm ionized gas, with the largest nebula extending across 8 (40 kpc). Some regions of the extended nebulae show kinematics that are consistent with gravitational motion, while other regions show relatively perturbed kinematics: velocity shifts and line widths too large to be readily explained by gravitational motion. We propose that a ~20 kpc x20 kpc outflow is present in one of the galaxies. Possible mechanisms for triggering the outflow are discussed. In this object, we also find evidence for ionization both by shocks and the radiation field of the AGN.

We present spectroscopic observations with VLT/XSHOOTER and Subaru/MOIRCS of a relatively bright Y-band drop-out galaxy in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, first selected by Bunker et al. (2010), McLure et al. (2010) and Bouwens et al. (2010) to be a lik ely z~8-9 galaxy on the basis of its colours in the HST ACS and WFC3 images. This galaxy, HUDF.YD3 (also known as UDFy-38135539) has been targetted for VLT/SINFONI integral field spectroscopy by Lehnert et al. (2010), who published a candidate Lyman-alpha emission line at z=8.55 from this source. In our independent spectroscopy using two different infrared spectrographs (5 hours with VLT/XSHOOTER and 11 hours with Subaru/MOIRCS) we are unable to reproduce this line. We do not detect any emission line at the spectral and spatial location reported in Lehnert et al. (2010), despite the expected signal in our combined MOIRCS & XSHOOTER data being 5-sigma. The line emission also seems to be ruled out by the faintness of this object in recently extremely deep F105W (Y-band) HST/WFC3 imaging from HUDF12; the line would fall within this filter and such a galaxy should have been detected at Y(AB)=28.6mag (~20 sigma) rather than the marginal Y(AB)~30mag observed in the Y-band image, >3 times fainter than would be expected if the emission lie was real. Hence it appears highly unlikely that the reported Lyman-alpha line emission at z>8 is real, meaning that the highest-redshift sources for which Lyman-alpha emission has been seen are at z=6.9-7.2. It is conceivable that Lyman-alpha does not escape galaxies at higher redshifts, where the Gunn-Peterson absorption renders the Universe optically thick to this line. However, deeper spectroscopy on a larger sample of candidate z>7 galaxies will be needed to test this.
