Deuterium fractionation processes in the interstellar medium (ISM) have been shown to be highly efficient in the family of nitrogen hydrides. To date, observations were limited to ammonia (NH$_2$D, NHD$_2$, ND$_3$) and imidogen radical (ND) isotopologues. We want to explore the high frequency windows offered by the emph{Herschel Space Observatory} to search for deuterated forms of amidogen radical NH$_2$ and to compare the observations against the predictions of our comprehensive gas-grain chemical model. Making use of the new molecular spectroscopy data recently obtained at high frequencies for NHD and ND$_2$, both isotopologues have been searched for in the spectral survey towards the class 0 IRAS 16293-2422, a source in which NH$_3$, NH and their deuterated variants have been previously detected. We used the observations carried out with HIFI (Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared) in the framework of the key program Chemical Herschel surveys of star forming regions (CHESS). We report the first detection of interstellar NHD and ND$_2$. Both species are observed in absorption against the continuum of the protostar. From the analysis of their hyperfine structure, accurate excitation temperature and column density values have been determined. The latter were combined with the column density of the parent species NH$_2$ to derive the deuterium fractionation in amidogen. The amidogen D/H ratio measured in the low-mass protostar IRAS 16293-2422 is comparable to the one derived for the related species imidogen and much higher than that observed for ammonia. Additional observations of these species will give more insights into the mechanism of ammonia formation and deuteration in the ISM. We finally indicate the current possibilities to further explore these species at submillimeter wavelengths.

Although ammonia is an abundant molecule commonly observed towards the dense interstellar medium, it has not yet been established whether its main formation route is from gas-phase ion-molecule reactions or grain-surface hydrogen additions on adsorbe d nitrogen atoms. Deuterium fractionation can be used as a tool to constrain formation mechanisms. High abundances of deuterated molecules are routinely observed in the dense interstellar medium, with the ratio between deuterated molecules and the main isotopologue enhanced by several orders of magnitude with respect to the elemental D/H ratio. In the case of ammonia, the detection of its triply deuterated isotopologue hints at high abundances of the deuterated intermediate nitrogen radicals, ND, NHD and ND$_2$. So far however, only ND has been detected in the interstellar medium. In this paper, to constrain the formation of ammonia, we aim at determining the NHD/NH$_2$ and ND$_2$/NHD abundance ratios, and compare them with the predictions of both pure gas-phase and grain-surface chemical models. We searched for the fundamental rotational transitions of NHD and ND$_2$ towards the class 0 protostar IRAS16293-2422, towards which NH, NH$_2$ and ND had been previously detected. Both NHD and ND$_2$ are detected in absorption towards the source. The relative abundance ratios NH$_2$ : NHD : ND$_2$ are close to 8 : 4 : 1. These ratios can be reproduced by our gas-phase chemical model within a factor of two-three. Statistical ratios as expected from grain-surface chemistry are also consistent with our data. Further investigations of the ortho-to-para ratio in ND$_2$ , both theoretical and observational, could bring new constraints to better understand nitrogen hydride chemistry.
In recent years, a plethora of high spectral resolution observations of sub-mm and FIR transitions of methylidene (CH), have demonstrated this radical to be a valuable proxy for H2, that can be used for characterising molecular gas within the interst ellar medium (ISM) on a Galactic scale, including the CO-dark component. Here we report the discovery of the 13CH isotopologue in the ISM using the upGREAT receiver on board SOFIA. We have detected the three hyperfine structure components of the 2THz frequency transition from its ground-state toward four high-mass star-forming regions and determine 13CH column densities. The ubiquity of molecules containing carbon in the ISM has turned the determination of the ratio between the abundances of carbons two stable isotopes, 12C/13C, into a cornerstone for Galactic chemical evolution studies. Whilst displaying a rising gradient with Galactocentric distance, this ratio, when measured using observations of different molecules (CO, H2CO, and others) shows systematic variations depending on the tracer used. These observed inconsistencies may arise from optical depth effects, chemical fractionation or isotope-selective photo-dissociation. Formed from C+ either via UV-driven or turbulence-driven chemistry, CH reflects the fractionation of C+, and does not show any significant fractionation effects unlike other molecules previously used to determine the 12C/13C isotopic ratio which make it an ideal tracer for the 12C/13C ratio throughout the Galaxy. Therefore, by comparing the derived column densities of 13CH with previously obtained SOFIA data of the corresponding transitions of the main isotopologue 12CH, we derive 12C/13C isotopic ratios toward Sgr B2(M), G34.26+0.15, W49(N) and W51E. Adding our values derived from 12/13CH to previous calculations of the Galactic isotopic gradient we derive a revised value of 12C/13C = 5.85(0.50)R_GC + 15.03(3.40).
Theories of a pre-RNA world suggest that glycolonitrile (HOCH$_2$CN) is a key species in the process of ribonucleotide assembly, which is considered as a molecular precursor of nucleic acids. In this Letter, we report the first detection of this pre- biotic molecule in the interstellar medium (ISM) by using ALMA data obtained at frequencies between 86.5$,$GHz and 266.5$,$GHz toward the Solar-type protostar IRAS16293-2422 B. A total of 15 unblended transitions of HOCH$_2$CN were identified. Our analysis indicates the presence of a cold (T$rm _{ex}$=24$pm$8$,$K) and a warm (T$rm _{ex}$=158$pm$38$,$K) component meaning that this molecule is present in both the inner hot corino and the outer cold envelope of IRAS16293 B. The relative abundance with respect to H$_2$ is (6.5$pm$0.6)$times$10$^{-11}$ and $geq$(6$pm$2)$times$10$^{-10}$ for the warm and cold components respectively. Our chemical modelling seems to underproduce the observed abundance for both the warm and cold component under various values of the cosmic-ray ionisation rate ($zeta$). Key gas phase routes for the formation of this molecule might be missing in our chemical network.

Emission of fullerenes in their infrared vibrational bands has been detected in space near hot stars. The proposed attribution of the diffuse interstellar bands at 9577 and 9632 AA to electronic transitions of the buckminsterfullerene cation (i.e. C$ _{60}^+$ ) was recently supported by new laboratory data, confirming the presence of this species in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). In this letter, we present the detection, also in the diffuse ISM, of the 17.4 and 18.9 $mu$m emission bands commonly attributed to vibrational bands of neutral C$_{60}$. According to classical models that compute the charge state of large molecules in space, C$_{60}$ is expected to be mostly neutral in the diffuse ISM. This is in agreement with the abundances of diffuse C$_{60}$ we derive here from observations.
We report the first detection of C$_2$ $A^1Pi_u$--$X^1Sigma_g^+$ (0,0) and CN $A^2Pi_u$--$X^2Sigma^+$ (0,0) absorption bands in the interstellar medium. The detection was made using the near-infrared (0.91--1.35 $mu$m) high-resolution ($R=20,000$ and 68,000) spectra of Cygnus OB2 No.,12 collected with the WINERED spectrograph mounted on the 1.3 m Araki telescope. The $A$--$X$ (1,0) bands of C$_2$ and CN were detected simultaneously. These near-infrared bands have larger oscillator strengths, compared with the $A$--$X$ (2,0) bands of C$_2$ and CN in the optical. In the spectrum of the C$_2$ (0,0) band with $R=68,000$, three velocity components in the line of sight could be resolved and the lines were detected up to high rotational levels ($Jsim20$). By analyzing the rotational distribution of C$_2$, we could estimate the kinetic temperature and gas density of the clouds with high accuracy. Furthermore, we marginally detected weak lines of $^{12}$C$^{13}$C for the first time in the interstellar medium. Assuming that the rotational distribution and the oscillator strengths of the relevant transitions of $^{12}$C$_2$ and $^{12}$C$^{13}$C are the same, the carbon isotope ratio was estimated to be $^{12}text{C}/^{13}text{C}=50$--100, which is consistent with the ratio in the local interstellar medium. We also calculated the oscillator strength ratio of the C$_2$ (0,0) and (1,0) bands from the observed band strengths. Unfortunately, our result could not discern theoretical and experimental results because of the uncertainties. High-resolution data to resolve the velocity components will be necessary for both bands in order to put stronger constraints on the oscillator strength ratios.
