Utilising Onsagers variational formulation, we derive dynamical equations for the relaxation of a fluid membrane tube in the limit of small deformation, allowing for a contrast of solvent viscosity across the membrane and variations in surface tension due to membrane incompressibility. We compute the relaxation rates, recovering known results in the case of purely axis-symmetric perturbations and making new predictions for higher order (azimuthal) $m$-modes. We analyse the long and short wavelength limits of these modes by making use of various asymptotic arguments. We incorporate stochastic terms to our dynamical equations suitable to describe both passive thermal forces and non-equilibrium active forces. We derive expressions for the fluctuation amplitudes, an effective temperature associated with active fluctuations, and the power spectral density for both the thermal and active fluctuations. We discuss an experimental assay that might enable measurement of these fluctuations to infer the properties of the active noise. Finally we discuss our results in the context of active membranes more generally and give an overview of some open questions in the field.

Using numerical simulations, we characterized the behavior of an elastic membrane immersed in an active fluid. Our findings reveal a nontrivial folding and re-expansion of the membrane that is controlled by the interplay of its resistance to bending and the self-propulsion strength of the active components in solution. We show how flexible membranes tend to collapse into multi-folded states, whereas stiff membranes oscillates between an extended configuration and a singly folded state. This study provides a simple example of how to exploit the random motion of active particles to perform mechanical work at the micro-scale.
The dynamics of a spherical chemically-powered synthetic colloidal motor that operates by a self-diffusiophoretic mechanism and has a catalytic domain of arbitrary shape is studied using both continuum theory and particle-based simulations. The motor executes active rotational motion when self-generated concentration gradients and interactions between the chemical species and colloidal motor surface break spherical symmetry. Local variations of chemical reaction rates on the motor catalytic surface with catalytic domain sizes and shapes provide such broken symmetry conditions. A continuum theoretical description of the active rotational motion is given, along with the results of particle-based simulations of the active dynamics. From these results a detailed description of the factors responsible for the active rotational dynamics can be given. Since active rotational motion often plays a significant part in the nature of the collective dynamics of many-motor systems and can be used to control motor motion in targeted cargo transport, our results should find applications beyond those considered here.
We examine the interactions between actively rotating proteins moving in a membrane. Experimental evidence suggests that such rotor proteins, like the ATP synthases of the inner mitochondrial membrane, can arrange themselves into lattices. We show th at crystallization is possible through a combination of hydrodynamic and repulsive interactions between the rotor proteins. In particular, hydrodynamic interactions induce rotational motion of the rotor protein assembly that, in the presence of repulsion, drives the system into a hexagonal lattice. The entire crystal rotates with an angular velocity which increases with motor density and decreases with lattice diameter - larger and sparser arrays rotate at a slower pace. The rotational interactions allow ensembles of proteins to sample configurations and reach an ordered steady state, which are inaccessible to the quenched nonrotational system. Rotational interactions thus act as a sort of temperature that removes disorder, except that actual thermal diffusion leads to expansion and loss of order. In contrast, the rotational interactions are bounded in space. Hence, once an ordered state is reached, it is maintained at all times.
Cell migration in morphogenesis and cancer metastasis typically involves interplay between different cell types. We construct and study a minimal, one-dimensional model comprised of two different motile cells with each cell represented as an active e lastic dimer. The interaction between the two cells via cadherins is modeled as a spring that can rupture beyond a threshold force as it undergoes dynamic loading via the attached motile cells. We obtain a phase diagram consisting of chase-and-run dynamics and clumping dynamics as a function of the stiffness of the interaction spring and the threshold force. We also find that while feedback between cadherins and cell-substrate interaction via integrins accentuates the chase-run behavior, feedback is not necessary for it.
Near field hydrodynamic interactions are essential to determine many important emergent behaviors observed in active suspensions, but have not been successfully modeled so far. In this work we propose an effective model capable of efficiently capturi ng the essence of the near field hydrodynamic interactions, validated numerically by a pedagogic model system consisting of an E. coli and a spherical tracer. The proposed model effectively captures all the details of near field hydrodynamics through only a tensorial coefficient of resistance, which is fundamentally different from, and thus cannot be replaced by, an effective interaction of conservative nature. In a critical test case that studies the scattering angle of the bacterium-tracer pair dynamics, calculations based on the proposed model reveals a region in parameter space where the bacterium is trapped by the spherical tracer, a phenomenon that is regularly observed in experiments but cannot be explained by any existing model.
