Nonclassical correlations provide a resource for many applications in quantum technology as well as providing strong evidence that a system is indeed operating in the quantum regime. Optomechanical systems can be arranged to generate quantum entanglement between the mechanics and a mode of travelling light. Here we propose automated optimisation of the production of quantum correlations in such a system, beyond what can be achieved through analytical methods, by applying Bayesian optimisation to the control parameters. Two-mode optomechanical squeezing experiment is simulated using a detailed theoretical model of the system, while the Bayesian optimisation process modifies the controllable parameters in order to maximise the non-classical two-mode squeezing and its detection, independently of the inner workings of the model. The Bayesian optimisation treats the simulations or the experiments as a black box. This we refer to as emph{theory-blind} optimisation, and the optimisation process is designed to be unaware of whether it is working with a simulation or the actual experimental setup. We find that in the experimentally relevant thermal regimes, the ability to vary and optimise a broad array of control parameters provides access to large values of two-mode squeezing that would otherwise be difficult or intractable to discover. In particular we observe that modulation of the driving frequency around the resonant sideband, when added to the set of control parameters, produces strong nonclassical correlations greater on average than the maximum achieved by optimising over the remaining parameters. We also find that using our optimisation approach raises the upper limit to the thermal regime in which squeezing can be achieved. This extends the range of experimental setups in which non-classical correlations could be generated beyond the region of high quantum cooperativity.

We solve the optimal quantum limit of probing a classical force exactly by a damped oscillator initially prepared in the factorized squeezed state. The memory effects of the thermal bath on the oscillator evolution are investigated. We show that the optimal force sensitivity obtained by the quantum estimation theory approaches to zero for the non-Markovian bath, whereas approaches to a finite non-zero value for the Markovian bath as the energy of the damped oscillator goes to infinity.
We explore non-classical correlations in n-cycle setting. In particular, we focus on correlations manifested by Kochen-Specker-Klyachko box (KS box), scenarios involving n-cycle non-contextuality inequalities and Popescu-Rohlrich boxes (PR box). We p rovide the criteria for optimal classical simulation of a KS box of arbitrary n dimension. The non-contextuality inequalities are analysed for n-cycle setting, and the condition for the quantum violation for odd as well as even n-cycle is discussed. We offer a simple extension of even cycle non-contextuality inequalities to the continuous variable case. Furthermore, we simulate a generalized PR box using KS box and provide some interesting insights. Towards the end, we discuss a few possible interesting open problems for future research.
We describe the construction and characterisation of a nano-oscillator formed by a Paul trap. The frequency and temperature stability of the nano-oscillator was measured over several days allowing us to identify the major sources of trap and environm ental fluctuations. We measure an overall frequency stability of 2 ppm/hr and a temperature stability of more than 5 hours via the Allan deviation. Importantly, we find that the charge on the nanoscillator is stable over a timescale of at least two weeks and that the mass of the oscillator, can be measured with a 3 % uncertainty. This allows us to distinguish between the trapping of a single nanosphere and a nano-dumbbell formed by a cluster of two nanospheres.
The ability to generate light in a pure quantum state is essential for advances in optical quantum technologies. However, obtaining quantum states with control in the photon-number has remained elusive. Optical light fields with zero and one photon c an be produced by single atoms, but so far it has been limited to generating incoherent mixtures, or coherent superpositions with a very small one-photon term. Here, we report on the on-demand generation of quantum superpositions of zero, one, and even two photons, via pulsed coherent control of a single artificial atom. Driving the system up to full atomic inversion leads to the generation of quantum superpositions of vacuum and one photon, with their relative populations controlled by the driving laser intensity. A stronger driving of the system, with $2pi$-pulses, results in a coherent superposition of vacuum, one and two photons, with the two-photon term exceeding the one-photon component, a state allowing phase super-resolving interferometry. Our results open new paths for optical quantum technologies with access to the photon-number degree-of-freedom.
Quantum discord quantifies non-classical correlations in a quantum system including those not captured by entanglement. Thus, only states with zero discord exhibit strictly classical correlations. We prove that these states are negligible in the whol e Hilbert space: typically a state picked out at random has positive discord; and, given a state with zero discord, a generic arbitrarily small perturbation drives it to a positive-discord state. These results hold for any Hilbert-space dimension, and have direct implications on quantum computation and on the foundations of the theory of open systems. In addition, we provide a simple necessary criterion for zero quantum discord. Finally, we show that, for almost all positive-discord states, an arbitrary Markovian evolution cannot lead to a sudden, permanent vanishing of discord.
