Recent researches on panoptic segmentation resort to a single end-to-end network to combine the tasks of instance segmentation and semantic segmentation. However, prior models only unified the two related tasks at the architectural level via a multi-branch scheme or revealed the underlying correlation between them by unidirectional feature fusion, which disregards the explicit semantic and co-occurrence relations among objects and background. Inspired by the fact that context information is critical to recognize and localize the objects, and inclusive object details are significant to parse the background scene, we thus investigate on explicitly modeling the correlations between object and background to achieve a holistic understanding of an image in the panoptic segmentation task. We introduce a Bidirectional Graph Reasoning Network (BGRNet), which incorporates graph structure into the conventional panoptic segmentation network to mine the intra-modular and intermodular relations within and between foreground things and background stuff classes. In particular, BGRNet first constructs image-specific graphs in both instance and semantic segmentation branches that enable flexible reasoning at the proposal level and class level, respectively. To establish the correlations between separate branches and fully leverage the complementary relations between things and stuff, we propose a Bidirectional Graph Connection Module to diffuse information across branches in a learnable fashion. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our BGRNet that achieves the new state-of-the-art performance on challenging COCO and ADE20K panoptic segmentation benchmarks.

Panoptic segmentation aims to perform instance segmentation for foreground instances and semantic segmentation for background stuff simultaneously. The typical top-down pipeline concentrates on two key issues: 1) how to effectively model the intrinsi c interaction between semantic segmentation and instance segmentation, and 2) how to properly handle occlusion for panoptic segmentation. Intuitively, the complementarity between semantic segmentation and instance segmentation can be leveraged to improve the performance. Besides, we notice that using detection/mask scores is insufficient for resolving the occlusion problem. Motivated by these observations, we propose a novel deep panoptic segmentation scheme based on a bidirectional learning pipeline. Moreover, we introduce a plug-and-play occlusion handling algorithm to deal with the occlusion between different object instances. The experimental results on COCO panoptic benchmark validate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Codes will be released soon at https://github.com/Mooonside/BANet.
Panoptic segmentation is posed as a new popular test-bed for the state-of-the-art holistic scene understanding methods with the requirement of simultaneously segmenting both foreground things and background stuff. The state-of-the-art panoptic segmen tation network exhibits high structural complexity in different network components, i.e. backbone, proposal-based foreground branch, segmentation-based background branch, and feature fusion module across branches, which heavily relies on expert knowledge and tedious trials. In this work, we propose an efficient, cooperative and highly automated framework to simultaneously search for all main components including backbone, segmentation branches, and feature fusion module in a unified panoptic segmentation pipeline based on the prevailing one-shot Network Architecture Search (NAS) paradigm. Notably, we extend the common single-task NAS into the multi-component scenario by taking the advantage of the newly proposed intra-modular search space and problem-oriented inter-modular search space, which helps us to obtain an optimal network architecture that not only performs well in both instance segmentation and semantic segmentation tasks but also be aware of the reciprocal relations between foreground things and background stuff classes. To relieve the vast computation burden incurred by applying NAS to complicated network architectures, we present a novel path-priority greedy search policy to find a robust, transferrable architecture with significantly reduced searching overhead. Our searched architecture, namely Auto-Panoptic, achieves the new state-of-the-art on the challenging COCO and ADE20K benchmarks. Moreover, extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of path-priority policy and transferability of Auto-Panoptic across different datasets. In this paper, we propose a spectral-spatial graph reasoning network (SSGRN) for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. Concretely, this network contains two parts that separately named spatial graph reasoning subnetwork (SAGRN) and spectral graph reasoning subnetwork (SEGRN) to capture the spatial and spectral graph contexts, respectively. Different from the previous approaches implementing superpixel segmentation on the original image or attempting to obtain the category features under the guide of label image, we perform the superpixel segmentation on intermediate features of the network to adaptively produce the homogeneous regions to get the effective descriptors. Then, we adopt a similar idea in spectral part that reasonably aggregating the channels to generate spectral descriptors for spectral graph contexts capturing. All graph reasoning procedures in SAGRN and SEGRN are achieved through graph convolution. To guarantee the global perception ability of the proposed methods, all adjacent matrices in graph reasoning are obtained with the help of non-local self-attention mechanism. At last, by combining the extracted spatial and spectral graph contexts, we obtain the SSGRN to achieve a high accuracy classification. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments on three public HSI benchmarks demonstrate the competitiveness of the proposed methods compared with other state-of-the-art approaches.

Panoptic segmentation as an integrated task of both static environmental understanding and dynamic object identification, has recently begun to receive broad research interest. In this paper, we propose a new computationally efficient LiDAR based pan optic segmentation framework, called GP-S3Net. GP-S3Net is a proposal-free approach in which no object proposals are needed to identify the objects in contrast to conventional two-stage panoptic systems, where a detection network is incorporated for capturing instance information. Our new design consists of a novel instance-level network to process the semantic results by constructing a graph convolutional network to identify objects (foreground), which later on are fused with the background classes. Through the fine-grained clusters of the foreground objects from the semantic segmentation backbone, over-segmentation priors are generated and subsequently processed by 3D sparse convolution to embed each cluster. Each cluster is treated as a node in the graph and its corresponding embedding is used as its node feature. Then a GCNN predicts whether edges exist between each cluster pair. We utilize the instance label to generate ground truth edge labels for each constructed graph in order to supervise the learning. Extensive experiments demonstrate that GP-S3Net outperforms the current state-of-the-art approaches, by a significant margin across available datasets such as, nuScenes and SemanticPOSS, ranking first on the competitive public SemanticKITTI leaderboard upon publication.
Recently, there has been a panoptic segmentation task combining semantic and instance segmentation, in which the goal is to classify each pixel with the corresponding instance ID. In this work, we propose a solution to tackle the panoptic segmentatio n task. The overall structure combines the bottom-up method and the top-down method. Therefore, not only can there be better performance, but also the execution speed can be maintained. The network mainly pays attention to the quality of the mask. In the previous work, we can see that the uneven contour of the object is more likely to appear, resulting in low-quality prediction. Accordingly, we propose enhancement features and corresponding loss functions for the silhouette of objects and backgrounds to improve the mask. Meanwhile, we use the new proposed confidence score to solve the occlusion problem and make the network tend to use higher quality masks as prediction results. To verify our research, we used the COCO dataset and CityScapes dataset to do experiments and obtained competitive results with fast inference time.
