Intense X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) can rapidly excite matter, leaving it in inherently unstable states that decay on femtosecond timescales. As the relaxation occurs primarily via Auger emission, excited state observations are constrained by Auger decay. In situ measurement of this process is therefore crucial, yet it has thus far remained elusive at XFELs due to inherent timing and phase jitter, which can be orders of magnitude larger than the timescale of Auger decay. Here, we develop a new approach termed self-referenced attosecond streaking, based upon simultaneous measurements of streaked photo- and Auger electrons. Our technique enables sub-femtosecond resolution in spite of jitter. We exploit this method to make the first XFEL time-domain measurement of the Auger decay lifetime in atomic neon, and, by using a fully quantum-mechanical description, retrieve a lifetime of $2.2^{ + 0.2}_{ - 0.3}$ fs for the KLL decay channel. Importantly, our technique can be generalised to permit the extension of attosecond time-resolved experiments to all current and future FEL facilities.

The superradiant instability of black hole space-times has been used to place limits on ultra-light bosonic particles. We show that these limits are model dependent. While the initial growth of the mode is gravitational and thus model independent, th e ability to place a limit on new particles requires the mode to grow unhindered to a large number density. Non-linear interactions between the particle and other light degrees of freedom that are mediated through higher dimension operators can damp this growth, eliminating the limit. However, these non-linearities may also destroy a cosmic abundance of these light particles, an attractive avenue for their discovery in several experiments. We study the specific example of the QCD axion and show that it is easy to construct models where these non-linearities eliminate limits from superradiance while preserving their cosmic abundance.
The concept of dominant interaction hamiltonians is introduced and applied to classical planar electron-atom scattering. Each trajectory is governed in different time intervals by two variants of a separable approximate hamiltonian. Switching between them results in exchange of energy between the two electrons. A second mechanism condenses the electron-electron interaction to instants in time and leads to an exchange of energy and angular momentum among the two electrons in form of kicks. We calculate the approximate and full classical deflection functions and show that the latter can be interpreted in terms of the switching sequences of the approximate one. Finally, we demonstrate that the quantum results agree better with the approximate classical dynamical results than with the full ones.
Single photon laser enabled Auger decay (spLEAD) has been redicted theoretically [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 083004 (2013)] and here we report its first experimental observation in neon. Using coherent, bichromatic free-electron laser pulses, we have dete cted the process and coherently controlled the angular distribution of the emitted electrons by varying the phase difference between the two laser fields. Since spLEAD is highly sensitive to electron correlation, this is a promising method for probing both correlation and ultrafast hole migration in more complex systems.
The KLM+KLN Auger electron spectrum of rubidium (Z=37) emitted in the electron capture decay of radioactive $^{83}$Sr in a polycrystalline platinum matrix and also $^{85}$Sr in polycrystalline platinum and carbon matrices as well as in an evaporated layer onto a carbon backing was experimentally studied in detail for the first time using a combined electrostatic electron spectrometer. Energies, relative intensities, and natural widths of fifteen basic spectrum components were determined and compared with both theoretical predictions and experimental data for krypton (Z=36). Relative spectrum line energies obtained from the semi-empirical calculations in intermediate coupling scheme were found to agree within 3$sigma$ with the measured values while disagreement with experiment exceeding 3$sigma$ was often observed for values obtained from our multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations. The absolute energy of the dominant spectrum component given by the semi-empirical approach agrees within 1$sigma$ with the measured value. Shifts of + (0.2$pm$0.2) and - (1.9$pm$0.2) eV were measured for the dominant KLM spectrum components between the $^{85}$Sr sources prepared by vacuum evaporation on and implanted into the carbon foil, respectively, relative to $^{85}$Sr implanted into the platinum foil. A value of (713$pm$2) eV was determined for the energy difference of the dominant components of the KLM+KLN Auger electron spectra of rubidium and krypton generated in the polycrystalline platinum matrix. From the detailed analysis of the measured data and available theoretical results, the general conclusion can be drawn that the proper description of the KLM+KLN Auger electron spectrum for Z around 37 should still be based on intermediate coupling of angular momenta taking into account relativistic effects.
Electron backscattering is introduced as mechanism to enhance high-harmonic generation in solid-state like systems with broken translational symmetry. As a paradigmatic example we derive for a finite chain of $N$ atoms the harmonic cut-off through ba ckscattering of electrons in the conduction band from the edges of the chain. We also demonstrate a maximum in the yield of the high harmonics from the conduction band if twice the quiver amplitude of the driven electrons equals the length of the chain. High-harmonic spectra as a function of photon energy are shown to be equivalent if the ratio of chain length to the wavelength of the light is kept constant. Our quantum results are corroborated by a (semi-)classical trajectory model with refined spatial properties required to describe dynamics with trajectories in the presence of broken translational symmetry.
