Inactivation of microorganisms on sensitive surfaces by cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is one major application in the field of plasma medicine because it provides a simple and effective way to sterilize heat-sensitive materials. Therefore, one has to know whether plasma treatment affects the treated surfaces, and thus causes long-term surface modifications. In this contribution, the effect of cold atmospheric Surface Micro-Discharge (SMD) plasma on different materials and its sporicidal behavior was investigated. Hence, different material samples (stainless steel, different polymers and glass) were plasma-treated for 16 hours, simulating multiple plasma treatments using an SMD plasma device. Afterwards, the material samples were analyzed using surface analysis methods such as laser microscopy, contact angle measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the device was used to investigate the behavior of Bacillus atrophaeus endospores inoculated on material samples at different treatment times. The interaction results for plasma-treated endospores show, that a log reduction of the spore count between 4.3 and 6.2 can be achieved within 15 min of plasma treatment. Besides, the surface analysis revealed, that there were three different types of reactions the probed materials showed to plasma treatment, ranging from no changes to shifts of the materials free surface energies and oxidation. As a consequence, it should be taken into account that even though cold atmospheric plasma treatment is a non-thermal method to inactivate microorganisms on heatsensitive materials, it still affects surface properties of the treated materials. Therefore, the focus of future work must be a further classification of plasma-caused material modifications.

The use of cold atmospheric plasmas (CAP) to sterilize sensitive surfaces is an interesting new field of applied plasma physics. Motivated by the shortages of face masks and safety clothing at the beginning of the corona pandemic, we conducted studie s on the sterilization of FF3 face masks with CAP and the resulting material effects. Therefore, the bactericidal and sporicidal efficacy of CAP afterglow sterilization of FFP3 mask material was investigated by inoculating fabric samples with test germs Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Bacillus atrophaeus (B. atrophaeus) and subsequent CAP afterglow treatment in a surface-micro-discharge (SMD) plasma device. In addition, a detailed analysis of the changes in long-term plasma treated (15h) mask material and its individual components - ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and polypropylene (PP) - was carried out using surface analysis methods such as laser microscopy, contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as fabric permeability and resistance measurements. The experiments showed that E. coli and B. atrophaeus could both be effectively inactivated by plasma treatment in nitrogen mode (12 kVpp, 5 kHz). For B. atrophaeus inactivation of more than 4-log was achieved after 30 minutes. E. coli population could be reduced by 5-log within one minute of CAP treatment and after five minutes a complete inactivation (> 6-log) was achieved. Material analysis showed that long-term (> 5 h) plasma treatment affects the electrostatic properties of the fabric. From this it can be deduced that the plasma treatment of FFP3 face masks with the CAP afterglow of an SMD device effectively inactivates microorganisms on the fabric. FFP3 masks can be plasma decontaminated and reused multiple times but only to a limited extent, as otherwise the permeability levels no longer meet the DIN EN 149 specifications.

It is well known that oscillations at the electron plasma frequency may appear due to instability of the plasma sheath near a positively biased electrode immersed in plasma. This instability is caused by transit-time effects when electrons, collected by this electrode, pass through the sheath. Such oscillations appear as low-power short spikes due to additional ionization of a neutral gas in the electrode vicinity. Herein we present first results obtained when the additional ionization was eliminated. We succeeded to prolong the oscillations during the whole time a positive bias was applied to the electrode. These oscillations could be obtained at much higher frequency than previously reported (tens of GHz compared to few hundreds of MHz) and power of tens of mW. These results in combination with presented theoretical estimations may be useful, e.g., for plasma diagnostics.
The nonlinear dynamics of energetic particle (EP) driven geodesic acoustic modes (EGAM) in tokamaks is investigated, and compared with the beam-plasma system (BPS). The EGAM is studied with the global gyrokinetic (GK) particle-in-cell code ORB5, trea ting the thermal ions and EP (in this case, fast ions) as GK and neglecting the kinetic effects of the electrons. The wave-particle nonlinearity only is considered in the EGAM nonlinear dynamics. The BPS is studied with a 1D code where the thermal plasma is treated as a linear dielectric, and the EP (in this case, fast electrons) with an n-body hamiltonian formulation. A one-to-one mapping between the EGAM and the BPS is described. The focus is on understanding and predicting the EP redistribution in phase space. We identify here two distint regimes for the mapping: in the low-drive regime, the BPS mapping with the EGAM is found to be complete, and in the high-drive regime, the EGAM dynamics and the BPS dynamics are found to differ. The transition is described with the presence of a non-negligible frequency chirping, which affects the EGAM but not the BPS, above the identified drive threshold. The difference can be resolved by adding an ad-hoc frequency modification to the BPS model. As a main result, the formula for the prediction of the nonlinear width of the velocity redistribution around the resonance velocity is provided.
Here we show that, despite a massive incident flux of energetic species, plasmas can induce transient cooling of a material surface. Using time-resolved optical thermometry in-situ with this plasma excitation, we reveal the novel underlying physics t hat drive this `plasma cooling that is driven by the diverse chemical and energetic species that comprise this fourth state of matter. We show that the photons and massive particles in the plasma impart energy to different chemical species on a surface, leading to local and temporally changing temperatures that lead to both increases and decreases in temperature on the surface of the sample, even though energy is being imparted to the material. This balance comes from the interplay between chemical reactions, momentum transfer, and energy exchange which occur on different time scales over the course of picoseconds to milliseconds. Thus, we show that through energetically exciting a material with a plasma, we can induce cooling, which can lead to revolutionary advances in refrigeration and thermal mitigation with this new process that is not inhibited by the same limitations in the current state-of-the-art systems.
Kinetic simulations and theory demonstrate that whistler waves can excite oblique, short-wavelength fluctuations through secondary drift instabilities if a population of sufficiently cold plasma is present. The excited modes lead to heating of the co ld populations and damping of the primary whistler waves. The instability threshold depends on the density and temperature of the cold population and can be relatively small if the temperature of the cold population is sufficiently low. This mechanism may thus play a significant role in controlling amplitude of whistlers in the regions of the Earths magnetosphere where cold background plasma of sufficient density is present.
