The interplay between band topology and magnetic order could generate a variety of time-reversal-breaking gapped topological phases with exotic topological quantization phenomena, such as quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators and axion insulators (AxI). Here by combining analytic models and first-principles calculations, we predict QAH and AxI phases can be realized in thin film of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic van der Waal material Mn$_2$Bi$_2$Te$_5$. The phase transition between QAH and AxI is tuned by the layer magnetization, which would provide a promising platform for chiral superconducting phases. We further present a simple and unified continuum model that captures the magnetic topological features, and is generic for Mn$_2$Bi$_2$Te$_5$ and MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ family materials.

We study disorder induced topological phase transitions in magnetically doped (Bi, Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ thin films, by using large scale transport simulations of the conductance through a disordered region coupled to reservoirs in the quantum spin Hall regi me. Besides the disorder strength, the rich phase diagram also strongly depends on the magnetic exchange field, the Fermi level, and the initial topological state in the undoped and clean limit of the films. In an initially trivial system at non-zero exchange field, varying the disorder strength can induce a sequence of transitions from a normal insulating, to a quantum anomalous Hall, then a spin-Chern insulating, and finally an Anderson insulating state. While for a system with topology initially, a similar sequence, but only starting from the quantum anomalous Hall state, can be induced. Varying the Fermi level we find a similarly rich phase diagram, including transitions from the quantum anomalous Hall to the spin-Chern insulating state via a state that behaves as a mixture of a quantum anomalous Hall and a metallic state, akin to recent experimental reports.
Combinations of non-trivial band topology and long-range magnetic order hold promise for realizations of novel spintronic phenomena, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the topological magnetoelectric effect. Following theoretical advances material candidates are emerging. Yet, a compound with a band-inverted electronic structure and an intrinsic net magnetization remains unrealized. MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is a candidate for the first antiferromagnetic topological insulator and the progenitor of a modular (Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$(MnBi$_2$Te$_4$) series. For $n$ = 1, we confirm a non-stoichiometric composition proximate to MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and establish an antiferromagnetic state below 13 K followed by a state with net magnetization and ferromagnetic-like hysteresis below 5 K. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments and density-functional calculations reveal a topological surface state on the MnBi$_4$Te$_7$(0001) surface, analogous to the non-magnetic parent compound Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Our results render MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ as a band-inverted material with an intrinsic net magnetization and a complex magnetic phase diagram providing a versatile platform for the realization of different topological phases.
Here we report on Landau level spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 34 T performed on a thin film of topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ epitaxially grown on a BaF$_2$ substrate. The observed response is consistent with the picture of a direct-gap se miconductor in which charge carriers closely resemble massive Dirac particles. The fundamental band gap reaches $E_g=(175pm 5)$~meV at low temperatures and it is not located on the trigonal axis, thus displaying either six or twelvefold valley degeneracy. Notably, our magneto-optical data do not indicate any band inversion. This suggests that the fundamental band gap is relatively distant from the $Gamma$ point where profound inversion exists andgives rise to relativistic-like surface states of Bi$_2$Te$_3$.
The unoccupied part of the band structure in the magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is studied by first-principles calculations. We find a second, unoccupied topological surface state with similar electronic structure to the celebrated occ upied topological surface state. This state is energetically located approximate $1.6$ eV above the occupied Dirac surface state around $Gamma$ point, which permit it to be directly observed by the two-photon angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We propose a unified effective model for the occupied and unoccupied surface states. Due to the direct optical coupling between these two surface states, we further propose two optical effects to detect the unoccupied surface state. One is the polar Kerr effect in odd layer from nonvanishing ac Hall conductance $sigma_{xy}(omega)$, and the other is higher-order terahertz-sideband generation in even layer, where the non-vanishining Berry curvature of the unoccupied surface state is directly observed from the giant Faraday rotation of optical emission.
Quantum states of matter combining non-trivial topology and magnetism attract a lot of attention nowadays; the special focus is on magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) featuring quantum anomalous Hall and axion insulator phases. Feasibility of many novel phenomena that emph{intrinsic} magnetic TIs may host depends crucially on our ability to engineer and efficiently tune their electronic and magnetic structures. Here, using angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy along with emph{ab initio} calculations we report on a large family of intrinsic magnetic TIs in the homologous series of the van der Waals compounds (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_m$ with $m=0, ..., 6$. Magnetic, electronic and, consequently, topological properties of these materials depend strongly on the $m$ value and are thus highly tunable. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the neighboring Mn layers strongly weakens on moving from MnBi2Te4 (m=0) to MnBi4Te7 (m=1), changes to ferromagnetic (FM) one in MnBi6Te10 (m=2) and disappears with further increase in m. In this way, the AFM and FM TI states are respectively realized in the $m=0,1$ and $m=2$ cases, while for $m ge 3$ a novel and hitherto-unknown topologically-nontrivial phase arises, in which below the corresponding critical temperature the magnetizations of the non-interacting 2D ferromagnets, formed by the MBT, building blocks, are disordered along the third direction. The variety of intrinsic magnetic TI phases in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_m$ allows efficient engineering of functional van der Waals heterostructures for topological quantum computation, as well as antiferromagnetic and 2D spintronics.
