This document describes the technical design concept of a compact high intensity, multi-GeV photon source. Capable of producing 10^12 equivalent photons per second this novel device will provide unprecedented access to physics processes with very small scattering probabilities such as hard exclusive reactions on the nucleon. When combined with dynamic nuclear polarized targets, its deployment will result in a large gain in polarized experiment figure-of-merit compared to all previous measurements. Compared to a traditional bremsstrahlung photon source the proposed concept presents several advantages, most significantly in providing a full intensity in a small spot at the target and in taking advantage of the narrow angular spread associated with high energy bremsstrahlung compare to the wide angular distribution of the secondary radiation to minimize the operational prompt and activation radiation dose rates.

A wide range of nucleon and nuclear structure experiments in Jefferson Labs Hall A require precise, continuous measurements of the polarization of the electron beam. In our Compton polarimeter, electrons are scattered off photons in a Fabry-Perot cav ity; by measuring an asymmetry in the integrated signal of the scattered photons detected in a GSO crystal, we can make non-invasive, continuous measurements of the beam polarization. Our goal is to achieve 1% statistical error within two hours of running. We discuss the design and commissioning of an upgrade to this apparatus, and report preliminary results for experiments conducted at beam energies from 3.5 to 5.9 GeV and photon rates from 5 to 100 kHz.
The photon arm of the Compton polarimeter in Hall A of Jefferson Lab has been upgraded to allow for electron beam polarization measurements with better than 1% accuracy. The data acquisition system (DAQ) now includes an integrating mode, which elimin ates several systematic uncertainties inherent in the original counting-DAQ setup. The photon calorimeter has been replaced with a Ce-doped GSO crystal, which has a bright output and fast response, and works well for measurements using the new integrating method at electron beam energies from 1 to 6 GeV.
Mu2e at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --> e- N with a sensitivity approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current worlds best limits for this process. The experiments sensitivity offers discovery potential over a wide array of new physics models and probes mass scales well beyond the reach of the LHC. We describe herein the conceptual design of the proposed Mu2e experiment. This document was created in partial fulfillment of the requirements necessary to obtain DOE CD-1 approval, which was granted July 11, 2012.

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector. It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants in Guangdong, C hina. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running, the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy at a confidence level of 3-4$sigma$, and determine neutrino oscillation parameters $sin^2theta_{12}$, $Delta m^2_{21}$, and $|Delta m^2_{ee}|$ to an accuracy of better than 1%. The JUNO detector can be also used to study terrestrial and extra-terrestrial neutrinos and new physics beyond the Standard Model. The central detector contains 20,000 tons liquid scintillator with an acrylic sphere of 35 m in diameter. $sim$17,000 508-mm diameter PMTs with high quantum efficiency provide $sim$75% optical coverage. The current choice of the liquid scintillator is: linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as the solvent, plus PPO as the scintillation fluor and a wavelength-shifter (Bis-MSB). The number of detected photoelectrons per MeV is larger than 1,100 and the energy resolution is expected to be 3% at 1 MeV. The calibration system is designed to deploy multiple sources to cover the entire energy range of reactor antineutrinos, and to achieve a full-volume position coverage inside the detector. The veto system is used for muon detection, muon induced background study and reduction. It consists of a Water Cherenkov detector and a Top Tracker system. The readout system, the detector control system and the offline system insure efficient and stable data acquisition and processing.

The Kaon Production Target (KPT) is an important component of the proposed K-Long facility which will be operated in JLab Hall~D, targeting strange baryon and meson spectroscopy. In this note we present a conceptual design for the Be-target assembly for the planned K-Long beam line, which will be used along with the GlueX spectrometer in its standard configuration for the proposed experiments. The high quality 12-GeV CEBAF electron beam enables production of a K$_L$ flux at the GlueX target on the order of $1times 10^4 K_L/sec$, which exceeds the K$_L$ flux previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. An intense K$_L$ beam would open a new window of opportunity not only to locate missing resonances in the strange hadron spectrum, but also to establish their properties by studying different decay channels systematically. The most important and radiation damaging background in K$_L$ production is due to neutrons. The Monte Carlo simulations for the proposed conceptual design of KPT show that the resulting neutron and gamma flux lead to a prompt radiation dose rate for the KLF experiment that is below the JLab Radiation Control Department radiation dose rate limits in the experimental hall and at the site boundary, and will not substantially affect the performance of the spectrometer.
