Conventional optical coherent receivers capture the full electrical field, including amplitude and phase, of a signal waveform by measuring its interference against a stable continuous-wave local oscillator (LO). In optical coherent communications, powerful digital signal processing (DSP) techniques operating on the full electrical field can effectively undo transmission impairments such as chromatic dispersion (CD), and polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Simpler direct detection techniques do not have access to the full electrical field and therefore lack the ability to compensate for these impairments. We present a full-field measurement technique using only direct detection that does not require any beating with a strong carrier LO. Rather, phase retrieval algorithms based on alternating projections that makes use of dispersive elements are discussed, allowing to recover the optical phase from intensity-only measurements. In this demonstration, the phase retrieval algorithm is a modified Gerchberg Saxton (GS) algorithm that achieves a simulated optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty of less than 4dB compared to theory at a bit-error rate of 2 times 10-2. Based on the proposed phase retrieval scheme, we experimentally demonstrate signal detection and subsequent standard 2x2 multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) equalization of a polarization-multiplexed 30-Gbaud QPSK transmitted over a 520-km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) span.

This letter analyzes the performances of a simple reconstruction method, namely the Projected Back-Projection (PBP), for estimating the direction of a sparse signal from its phase-only (or amplitude-less) complex Gaussian random measurements, i.e., a n extension of one-bit compressive sensing to the complex field. To study the performances of this algorithm, we show that complex Gaussian random matrices respect, with high probability, a variant of the Restricted Isometry Property (RIP) relating to the l1 -norm of the sparse signal measurements to their l2 -norm. This property allows us to upper-bound the reconstruction error of PBP in the presence of phase noise. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to highlight the performance of our approach in this phase-only acquisition model when compared to error achieved by PBP in classical compressive sensing.
We realize mode-multiplexed full-field reconstruction over six spatial and polarization modes after 30-km multimode fiber transmission using intensity-only measurements without any optical carrier or local oscillator at the receiver or transmitter. T he receivers capabilities to cope with modal dispersion and mode dependent loss are experimentally demonstrated.
The convergence of radar sensing and communication applications in the terahertz (THz) band has been envisioned as a promising technology, since it incorporates terabit-per-second (Tbps) data transmission and mm-level radar sensing in a spectrum- and cost-efficient manner, by sharing both the frequency and hardware resources. However, the joint THz radar and communication (JRC) system faces considerable challenges, due to the peculiarities of the THz channel and front ends. To this end, the waveform design for THz-JRC systems with ultra-broad bandwidth is investigated in this paper. Firstly, by considering THz-JRC systems based on the co-existence concept, where both functions operate in a time-domain duplex (TDD) manner, a novel multi-subband quasi-perfect (MS-QP) sequence, composed of multiple Zadoff-Chu (ZC) perfect subsequences on different subbands, is proposed for target sensing, which achieves accurate target ranging and velocity estimation, whilst only requiring cost-efficient low-rate analog-to-digital converters (A/Ds) for sequence detection. Furthermore, the root index of each ZC subsequence of the MS-QP sequence is designed to eliminate the influence of doppler shift on the THz radar sensing. Finally, a data-embedded MS-QP (DE-MS-QP) waveform is constructed through time-domain extension of the MS-QP sequence, generating null frequency points on each subband for data transmission. Unlike the THz-JRC system in TDD manner, the proposed DE-MS-QP waveform enables simultaneous interference-free sensing and communication, whilst inheriting all the merits from MS-QP sequences. Numerical results validate the superiority of the proposed waveforms in terms of sensing performance, hardware cost and flexible resource allocation over their conventional counterparts.
In this article, continuous Galerkin finite elements are applied to perform full waveform inversion (FWI) for seismic velocity model building. A time-domain FWI approach is detailed that uses meshes composed of variably sized triangular elements to d iscretize the domain. To resolve both the forward and adjoint-state equations, and to calculate a mesh-independent gradient associated with the FWI process, a fully-explicit, variable higher-order (up to degree $k=5$ in $2$D and $k=3$ in 3D) mass lumping method is used. By adapting the triangular elements to the expected peak source frequency and properties of the wavefield (e.g., local P-wavespeed) and by leveraging higher-order basis functions, the number of degrees-of-freedom necessary to discretize the domain can be reduced. Results from wave simulations and FWIs in both $2$D and 3D highlight our developments and demonstrate the benefits and challenges with using triangular meshes adapted to the material proprieties. Software developments are implemented an open source code built on top of Firedrake, a high-level Python package for the automated solution of partial differential equations using the finite element method.
A critical task in graph signal processing is to estimate the true signal from noisy observations over a subset of nodes, also known as the reconstruction problem. In this paper, we propose a node-adaptive regularization for graph signal reconstructi on, which surmounts the conventional Tikhonov regularization, giving rise to more degrees of freedom; hence, an improved performance. We formulate the node-adaptive graph signal denoising problem, study its bias-variance trade-off, and identify conditions under which a lower mean squared error and variance can be obtained with respect to Tikhonov regularization. Compared with existing approaches, the node-adaptive regularization enjoys more general priors on the local signal variation, which can be obtained by optimally designing the regularization weights based on Pronys method or semidefinite programming. As these approaches require additional prior knowledge, we also propose a minimax (worst-case) strategy to address instances where this extra information is unavailable. Numerical experiments with synthetic and real data corroborate the proposed regularization strategy for graph signal denoising and interpolation, and show its improved performance compared with competing alternatives.
