We uncover a local order parameter for measurement-induced phase transitions: the average entropy of a single reference qubit initially entangled with the system. Using this order parameter, we identify scalable probes of measurement-induced criticality (MIC) that are immediately applicable to advanced quantum computing platforms. We test our proposal on a 1+1 dimensional stabilizer circuit model that can be classically simulated in polynomial time. We introduce the concept of a decoding light cone to establish the local and efficiently measurable nature of this probe. We also estimate bulk and surface critical exponents for the transition. Developing scalable probes of MIC in more general models may be a useful application of noisy-intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices, as well as point to more efficient realizations of fault-tolerant quantum computation.

We propose entanglement negativity as a fine-grained probe of measurement-induced criticality. We motivate this proposal in stabilizer states, where for two disjoint subregions, comparing their mutual negativity and their mutual information leads to a precise distinction between bipartite and multipartite entanglement. In a measurement-only stabilizer circuit that maps exactly to two-dimensional critical percolation, we show that the mutual information and the mutual negativity are governed by boundary conformal fields of different scaling dimensions at long distances. We then consider a class of hybrid circuit models obtained by perturbing the measurement-only circuit with unitary gates of progressive levels of complexity. While other critical exponents vary appreciably for different choices of unitary gate ensembles at their respective critical points, the mutual negativity has scaling dimension 3 across remarkably many of the hybrid circuits, which is notably different from that in percolation. We contrast our results with limiting cases where a geometrical minimal-cut picture is available.
A wave function exposed to measurements undergoes pure state dynamics, with deterministic unitary and probabilistic measurement induced state updates, defining a quantum trajectory. For many-particle systems, the competition of these different elemen ts of dynamics can give rise to a scenario similar to quantum phase transitions. To access it despite the randomness of single quantum trajectories, we construct an $n$-replica Keldysh field theory for the ensemble average of the $n$-th moment of the trajectory projector. A key finding is that this field theory decouples into one set of degrees of freedom that heats up indefinitely, while $n-1$ others can be cast into the form of pure state evolutions generated by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. This decoupling is exact for free theories, and useful for interacting ones. In particular, we study locally measured Dirac fermions in $(1+1)$ dimensions, which can be bosonized to a monitored interacting Luttinger liquid at long wavelengths. For this model, the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian corresponds to a quantum Sine-Gordon model with complex coefficients. A renormalization group analysis reveals a gapless critical phase with logarithmic entanglement entropy growth, and a gapped area law phase, separated by a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The physical picture emerging here is a pinning of the trajectory wave function into eigenstates of the measurement operators upon increasing the monitoring rate.
We numerically investigate the structure of many-body wave functions of 1D random quantum circuits with local measurements employing the participation entropies. The leading term in system size dependence of participation entropies indicates a multif ractal scaling of the wave-functions at any non-zero measurement rate. The sub-leading term contains universal information about measurement--induced phase transitions and plays the role of an order parameter, being non-zero in the error-correcting phase and vanishing in the quantum Zeno phase. We provide an analytical interpretation of this behavior expressing the participation entropy in terms of partition functions of classical statistical models in 2D.
We consider a dynamic protocol for quantum many-body systems, which enables to study the interplay between unitary Hamiltonian driving and random local projective measurements. While the unitary dynamics tends to increase entanglement, local measurem ents tend to disentangle, thus favoring decoherence. Close to a quantum transition where the system develops critical correlations with diverging length scales, the competition of the two drivings is analyzed within a dynamic scaling framework, allowing us to identify a regime (dynamic scaling limit) where the two mechanisms develop a nontrivial interplay. We perform a numerical analysis of this protocol in a measurement-driven Ising chain, which supports the scaling laws we put forward. The local measurement process generally tends to suppress quantum correlations, even in the dynamic scaling limit. The power law of the decay of the quantum correlations turns out to be enhanced at the quantum transition.

The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) driven by $d$ incommensurate frequencies realizes the universality class of $d$-dimensional disordered metals. For $d>3$, the system exhibits an Anderson metal-insulator transition which has been observed within the fra mework of an atom optics realization. However, the absence of genuine randomness in the QKR reflects in critical phenomena beyond those of the Anderson universality class. Specifically, the system shows strong sensitivity to the algebraic properties of its effective Planck constant $tilde h equiv 4pi /q$. For integer $q$, the system may be in a globally integrable state, in a `super-metallic configuration characterized by diverging response coefficients, Anderson localized, metallic, or exhibit transitions between these phases. We present numerical data for different $q$-values and effective dimensionalities, with the focus being on parameter configurations which may be accessible to experimental investigations.
