In the series R2PdSi3, Nd2PdSi3 is an anomalous compound in the sense that it exhibits ferromagnetic order unlike other members in this family. The magnetic ordering temperature is also unusually high compared to the expected value for a Nd-based system, assuming 4f localization. Here, we have studied the electronic structure of single crystalline Nd2PdSi3 employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio band structure calculations. Theoretical results obtained for the effective electron correlation strength of 6 eV corroborate well with the experimental valence band spectra. While there is significant Pd 4d-Nd 4f hybridization, the states near the Fermi level are found to be dominated by hybridized Nd 4f-Si 3p states. Nd 3d core level spectrum exhibits multiple features manifesting strong final state effects due to electron correlation, charge transfer and collective excitations. These results serve as one of the rare demonstrations of hybridization of Nd 4$f$ states with the conduction electrons possibly responsible for the exoticity of this compound.

We report a comprehensive investigation of Ln2NiIrO6 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd) using thermodynamic and transport properties, neutron powder diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the role of A-site cations on the magnetic interactions in this family of hybrid 3d-5d-4f compositions. Magnetic structure determination using neutron diffraction reveals antiferromagnetism for La2NiIrO6, a collinear ferrimagnetic Ni/Ir state that is driven to long range antiferromagnetism upon the onset of Nd ordering in Nd2NiIrO6, and a non-collinear ferrimagnetic Ni/Ir sublattice interpenetrated by a ferromagnetic Pr lattice for Pr2NiIrO6. For Pr2NiIrO6 heat capacity results reveal the presence of two independent magnetic sublattices and transport resistivity indicates insulating behavior and a conduction pathway that is thermally mediated. First principles DFT calculation elucidates the existence of the two independent magnetic sublattices within Pr2NiIrO6 and offers insight into the behavior in La2NiIrO6 and Nd2NiIrO6. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is consistent with spin-orbit coupling splitting the t2g manifold of octahedral Ir4+ into a Jeff = 1/2 and Jeff = 3/2 state for all members of the series considered.
Surface of quantum materials often exhibits significantly different behavior than the bulk due to changed topologies and symmetry protections. The outstanding problem is to find out if the exoticity of a material is linked to the changed topology at the surface or it is a bulk property. Hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) is a significantly bulk sensitive technique (escape depth of valence electrons is about 40 AA for 6 keV photon energy) and the probing depth can be tuned by changing the electron emission angle. Therefore, HAXPES is often used to reveal the surface-bulk differences in a material. Here, we show that the delineation of surface-bulk differences in the valence band spectral functions using this method is highly non-trivial due to the complexity arising from linear dichroic effect in addition to the change in surface sensitivity. We show that core level spectra can be used to reveal the surface-bulk differences in the electronic structure. The Ca 2p spectra exhibit evidence of significant hybridization with the conduction electrons revealing their importance in the electronic properties of the system as also found for the charge reservoir layers in cuprate superconductors. The Fe 2p core level spectra as a function of bulk sensitivity and temperature reveals an unusual scenario; while the surface electronic structure corroborates well with the observed phase transitions of the system, the bulk spectra exhibit signature of additional structural phases providing a rare evidence of structural anomaly to be a bulk property.
Momentum-transfer (q) dependent non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements were made at the N4,5 edges for several rare earth compounds. With increasing q, giant dipole resonances diminish, to be replaced by strong multiplet lines at lower energy transfer. These multiplets result from two different orders of multipole scattering and are distinct for systems with simple 4f^0 and 4f^1 initial states. A many-body theoretical treatment of the multiplets agrees well with the experimental data on ionic La and Ce phosphate reference compounds. Comparing measurements on CeO2 and CeRh3 to the theory and the phosphates indicates sensitivity to hybridization as observed by a broadening of 4f^0-related multiplet features. We expect such strong, nondipole features to be generic for NIXS from f-electron systems.

We present a theoretical study of the effect of electron-electron interactions and Sr doping on the electronic structure of infinite-layer (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ using the density functional+dynamical mean-field theory approach. In particular, we explore the impact of epitaxial compressive strain that experience (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ films on the electronic properties, magnetic correlations, and exchange couplings. Our results reveal the crucial importance of orbital-dependent correlation effects in the Ni $3d$ shell of Sr-doped NdNiO$_2$. Upon doping with Sr, it undergoes a Lifshitz transition which is accompanied by a reconstruction of magnetic correlations: For Sr $x<0.2$ (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ adopts the Neel $(111)$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, while for $x>0.2$ the $C$-type $(110)$ AFM sets in the unstrained (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$, with a highly frustrated region at $x simeq 0.2$, all within DFT+DMFT at $T=290$ K. Our results for the Neel AFM at Sr $x=0$ suggest that AFM NdNiO$_2$ appears at the verge of a Mott-Hubbard transition, providing a plausible explanation for the experimentally observed weakly insulating behavior of NdNiO$_2$ for Sr $x<0.1$. We observe that the Lifshitz transition makes a change of the band structure character from electron- to hole-like with Sr $x$, in agreement with recent experiments. Our results for magnetic couplings demonstrate an unanticipated frustration of the Ni $3d$ magnetic moments, which suppresses magnetic order near Sr $x=0.2$. We find that the effect of frustration is maximal for Sr doping $x simeq 0.1-0.2$ that nearly corresponds to the experimentally observed doping value. We conclude that the in-plane strain adjusts a bandwidth of the Ni $x^2-y^2$ band, i.e., controls the effect of electron correlations in the Ni $x^2-y^2$ orbitals. The electronic properties of (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ reveal an anomalous sensitivity upon a change of the crystal structure parameters.
We investigated the dispersion of nuclear spin waves in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ by using neutron spin-echo spectroscopy at millikelvin temperatures. Our results show unambiguously the existence of dispersion of nuclear spin waves in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ at T = 30 mK. A fit of the dispersion data with the spin wave dispersion formula gave the Suhl-Nakamura interaction range to be of the order of 10 {AA}.
