We discuss the special holonomy metrics of Gibbons, Lu, Pope and Stelle, which were constructed as nilmanifold bundles over a line by uplifting supersymmetric domain wall solutions of supergravity to 11 dimensions. We show that these are dual to intersecting brane solutions, and considering these leads us to a more general class of special holonomy metrics. Further dualities relate these to non-geometric backgrounds involving intersections of branes and exotic branes. We discuss the possibility of resolving these spaces to give smooth special holonomy manifolds.

This paper shows how to construct anomaly free world sheet actions in string theory with $D$-branes. Our method is to use Deligne cohomology and bundle gerbe theory to define geometric objects which are naturally associated to $D$-branes and connecti ons on them. The holonomy of these connections can be used to cancel global anomalies in the world sheet action.
We study the worldvolume dynamics of BPS domain walls in N=1 SQCD with N_f=N flavors, and exhibit an enhancement of supersymmetry for the reduced moduli space associated with broken flavor symmetries. We provide an explicit construction of the worldv olume superalgebra which corresponds to an N=2 Kahler sigma model in 2+1D deformed by a potential, given by the norm squared of a U(1) Killing vector, resulting from the flavor symmetries broken by unequal quark masses. This framework leads to a worldvolume description of novel two-wall junction configurations, which are 1/4-BPS objects, but nonetheless preserve two supercharges when viewed as kinks on the wall worldvolume.
We study the effect of Scherk-Schwarz deformations on intersecting branes. Non-chiral fermions in any representation of the Chan-Paton gauge group generically acquire a tree-level mass dependent on the compactification radius and the brane wrapping n umbers. This offers an elegant solution to one of the long-standing problems in intersecting-brane-world models where the ubiquitous presence of massless non-chiral fermions is a clear embarrassment for any attempt to describe the Standard Model of Particle Physics.
We construct a class of supersymmetric vacua of type IIB string theory describing systems of three- and seven-branes non-perturbatively completed by brane instantons. The vacua are specified by a set of holomorphic functions defined over a complex pl ane up to non-trivial U-duality monodromies around the brane locations. In the simplest setting, the solutions can be seen as a generalization of F-theory elliptic fibrations, where the torus fiber is replaced by a genus two Riemann surface with periods encoding the information on the axio-dilaton, the warp factor and the NS-NS and R-R fluxes.
We construct a one-parameter set of intersecting D4-brane models, with six stacks, that yield the (non-supersymmetric) standard model plus extra vector-like matter. Twisted tadpoles and gauge anomalies are cancelled, and the model contains all of the Yukawa couplings to the tachyonic Higgs doublets that are needed to generate mass terms for the fermions. A string scale in the range 1-10 TeV and a Higgs mass not much greater than the current bound is obtained for certain values of the parameters, consistently with the observed values of the gauge coupling constants.
