In this paper we show that graphene surface plasmons can be excited when an electromagnetic wave packet impinges on a single metal slit covered with graphene. The excitation of the plasmons localized over the slit is revealed by characteristic peaks in the absorption spectrum. It is shown that the position of the peaks can be tuned either by the graphene doping level or by the dielectric function of the material filling the slit. The whole system forms the basis for a plasmonic sensor when the slit is filled with an analyte.

We study the effect of two metallic slabs on the collective dynamics of electrons in graphene positioned between the two slabs. We show that if the slabs are perfect conductors the plasmons of graphene display a linear dispersion relation. The veloci ty of these acoustic plasmons crucially depends on the distance between the two metal gates and the graphene sheet. In the case of generic slabs, the dispersion relation of graphene plasmons is much more complicated but we find that acoustic plasmons can still be obtained under specific conditions.
We theoretically demonstrate that dc electron flow across the junction of two-dimensional electron systems leads to excitation of edge magnetoplasmons. The threshold current for such plasmon excitation does not depend on contact effects and approache s zero for ballistic electron systems, which makes a strong distinction from the well-known Dyakonov-Shur and Cerenkov-type instabilities. We estimate the competing plasmon energy gain from dc current and loss due to electron scattering. We show that plasmon self excitation is feasible in GaAs-based heterostructures at $Tlesssim 200$ K and magnetic fields $B lesssim 10$ T.

We analytically and numerically clarify the physical origin and the behaviour of the Norton-wave scattered by a narrow slit, at optical frequencies. This apparently surface field, which comes in addition to the surface plasmon polariton and classical cylindrical lightwaves, features its own scattering lobe associated to oscillating induced currents extending within both horizontal metal parts forming the slit. Theory is given taking into account the finite size of the aperture.
In this article we perform the quantization of graphene plasmons using both a macroscopic approach based on the classical average electromagnetic energy and a quantum hydrodynamic model, in which graphene charge carriers are modeled as a charged flui d. Both models allow to take into account the dispersion of graphenes optical response, with the hydrodynamic model also allowing for the inclusion of non-local effects. Using both methods, the electromagnetic field mode-functions, and the respective frequencies, are determined for two different graphene structures. we show how to quantize graphene plasmons, considering that graphene is a dispersive medium, and taking into account both local and nonlocal descriptions. It is found that the dispersion of graphenes optical response leads to a non-trivial normalization condition for the mode-functions. The obtained mode-functions are then used to calculate the decay of an emitter, represented by a dipole, via the excitation of graphene surface plasmon-polaritons. The obtained results are compared with the total spontaneous decay rate of the emitter and a near perfect match is found in the relevant spectral range. It is found that non-local effects in graphenes conductivity, become relevant for the emission rate for small Fermi energies and small distances between the dipole and the graphene sheet.
We propose a scheme to directionally couple light into graphene plasmons by placing a graphene sheet on a magneto-optical substrate. When a magnetic field is applied parallel to the surface, the graphene plasmon dispersion relation becomes asymmetric in the forward and backward directions. It is possible to achieve unidirectional excitation of graphene plasmons with normally incident illumination by applying a grating to the substrate. The directionality can be actively controlled by electrically gating the graphene, or by varying the magnetic bias. This scheme may have applications in graphene-based opto-electronics and sensing.
