Investigation of elementary excitations has advanced our understanding of many-body physics governing most physical properties of matter. Recently spin-orbit excitons have drawn much attention, whose condensates near phase transitions exhibit Higgs mode oscillations, a long-sought physical phenomenon [Nat. Phys. {bf 13}, 633 (2017)]. These critical transition points resulting from competing spin-orbit coupling (SOC), local crystalline symmetry and exchange interactions, are not obvious in Iridium based materials, where SOC prevails in general. Here, we present results of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering on a spin-orbital liquid Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$ and three other 6H-hexagonal perovskite iridates which show magnetism, contrary to non-magnetic singlet ground state expected due to strong SOC. Our results show that substantial hopping between closely placed Ir$^{5+}$ ions within Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimers in these 6H-iridates, modifies spin-orbit coupled states and reduces spin-orbit excitation energies. Here, we are forced to use at least a two-site model, to match the excitation spectrum going in line with the strong intra-dimer hopping. Apart from SOC, low energy physics of iridates is thus critically dependent on hopping, and may not be ignored even for systems having moderate hopping, where the excitation spectra can be explained using an atomic model. SOC which is generally found to be 0.4-0.5~eV in iridates, is scaled in effect down to $sim$0.26~eV for the 6H-systems, sustaining the hope to achieve quantum criticality by tuning Ir-Ir separation.

We report the successful synthesis of single-crystals of the layered iridate, (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_{x}$)$_2$IrO$_3$, $0leq x leq 0.9$, and a thorough study of its structural, magnetic, thermal and transport properties. The new compound allows a controlled interpolation between Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$, while maintaing the novel quantum magnetism of the honeycomb Ir$^{4+}$ planes. The measured phase diagram demonstrates a dramatic suppression of the Neel temperature, $T_N$, at intermediate $x$ suggesting that the magnetic order in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$ are distinct, and that at $xapprox 0.7$, the compound is close to a magnetically disordered phase that has been sought after in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$. By analyzing our magnetic data with a simple theoretical model we also show that the trigonal splitting, on the Ir$^{4+}$ ions changes sign from Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$, and the honeycomb iridates are in the strong spin-orbit coupling regime, controlled by $jeff=1/2$ moments.
We report on an angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) study of bulk electron-doped perovskite iridate, (Sr1-xLax)3Ir2O7. Fermi surface pockets are observed with a total electron count in keeping with that expected from La substitution. Depending on th e energy and polarization of the incident photons, these pockets show up in the form of disconnected Fermi arcs, reminiscent of those reported recently in surface electron-doped Sr2IrO4. Our observed spectral variation is consistent with the coexistence of an electronic supermodulation with structural distortion in the system.
X-ray scattering by multiferroic LuFe2O4 is reported. Below 320 K, superstructure reflections indicate an incommensurate charge order with propagation close to (1/3,1/3,3/2). The corresponding charge configuration, also found by electronic structure calculations as most stable, contains polar Fe/O double-layers with antiferroelectric stacking. Diffuse scattering at 360 K, with (1/3,1/3,0) propagation, indicates ferroelectric short-range correlations between neighboring double-layers. The temperature dependence of the incommensuration indicates that charge order and magnetism are coupled.

We report on the tuning of magnetic interactions in superlattices composed of single and bilayer SrIrO$_3$ inter-spaced with SrTiO$_3$. Magnetic scattering shows predominately $c$-axis antiferromagnetic orientation of the magnetic moments for the bil ayer justifying these systems as viable artificial analogues of the bulk Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates. Magnon gaps are observed in both superlattices, with the magnitude of the gap in the bilayer being reduced to nearly half that in its bulk structural analogue, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We assign this to modifications in the anisotropic exchange driven by bending of the $c$-axis Ir-O-Ir bond and subsequent local environment changes, as detected by x-ray diffraction and modeled using spin wave theory. These findings explain how even subtle structural modulations driven by heterostructuring in iridates are leveraged by spin orbit coupling to drive large changes in the magnetic interactions.
Quantum magnets with significant bond-directional Ising interactions, so-called Kitaev materials, have attracted tremendous attention recently in the search for exotic spin liquid states. Here we present a comprehensive set of measurements that enabl es us to investigate the crystal structures, Ir$^{4+}$ single ion properties, and magnetic ground states of the double perovskite iridates La$_2B$IrO$_6$ ($B$ $=$ Mg, Zn) and $A_2$CeIrO$_6$ ($A$ $=$ Ba, Sr) with a large nearest neighbor distance $>$ 5 Angstroms between Ir$^{4+}$ ions. Our neutron powder diffraction data on Ba$_2$CeIrO$_6$ can be refined in the cubic space group Fm$bar{3}$m, while the other three systems are characterized by weak monoclinic structural distortions. Despite the variance in the non-cubic crystal field experienced by the Ir$^{4+}$ ions in these materials, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering are consistent with $J_{rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 moments in all cases. Furthermore, neutron scattering and resonant magnetic x-ray scattering show that these systems host A-type antiferromagnetic order. These electronic and magnetic ground states are consistent with expectations for face-centered-cubic magnets with significant antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange, which indicates that spacing magnetic ions far apart may be a promising design principle for uncovering additional Kitaev materials.
