While the performance of mode-locked fiber lasers has been improved significantly, the limited gain bandwidth restricts them to generate ultrashort pulses approaching a few cycles or even shorter. Here we present a novel method to achieve few cycle pulses (~5 cycles) with ultra-broad spectrum (~400 nm). To our best knowledge, this is the shortest pulse width and broadest spectrum directly generated from fiber lasers. It is noteworthy that a dramatic ultrashort pulse evolution can be stabilized in a laser oscillator by the unique nonlinear processes of a self-similar evolution as a nonlinear attractor in the gain fiber and a perfect saturable absorber action of the Mamyshev oscillator.

Lasers based on Cr$^{2+}$-doped II-VI material, often known as the Ti:Sapphire of the mid-infrared, can directly provide few-cycle pulses with super-octave-spanning spectra, and serve as efficient drivers for generating broadband mid-infrared radiati on. It is expected that the wider adoption of this technology benefits from more compact and cost-effective embodiments. Here, we report the first directly diode-pumped, Kerr-lens mode-locked Cr$^{2+}$-doped II-VI oscillator pumped by a single InP diode, providing average powers of over 500 mW and pulse durations of 45 fs - shorter than six optical cycles at 2.4 $mu$m. These correspond to a sixty-fold increase in peak power compared to the previous diode-pumped record, and are at similar levels with respect to more mature fiber-pumped oscillators. The diode-pumped femtosecond oscillator presented here constitutes a key step towards a more accessible alternative to synchrotron-like infrared radiation, and is expected to accelerate research in laser spectroscopy and ultrafast infrared optics.
We demonstrate a fiber source with the best performance from an ultrafast fiber oscillator to date. The ring-cavity Mamyshev oscillator produces 50-nJ and 40-fs pulses. The peak power is an order of magnitude higher than that of previous lasers with similar fiber mode area. This performance is achieved by designing the oscillator to support parabolic pulse formation which enables the management of unprecedented nonlinear phase shifts. Experimental results are limited by available pump power. Numerical simulations reveal key aspects of the pulse evolution, and realistically suggest that (after external compression) peak powers that approach 10 MW are possible from ordinary single-mode fiber. The combination of practical features such as environmental stability, established previously, with the performance described here make the Mamyshev oscillator extremely attractive for applications.

BGGSe is a newly developed nonlinear material that is attractive for ultrabroad frequency mixing and ultrashort pulse generation due to its comparably low dispersion and high damage threshold. In a first experiment, we show that a long crystal length of 2.6 mm yields a pulse energy of 21 pJ at 100 MHz with a spectral bandwidth covering 5.8 to 8.5 microns. The electric field of the carrier-envelope-phase stable pulse is directly measured with electro-optical sampling and reveals a pulse duration of 91 fs, which corresponds to sub-four optical cycles, thus confirming some of the prospects of the material for ultrashort pulse generation and mid-infrared spectroscopy.
We present the first design and analysis of a solid-state Mamyshev oscillator. We utilize the phase-mismatched cascaded quadratic nonlinear process in periodically poled lithium niobite waveguide to generate substantial spectral broadening for Mamysh ev modelocking. The extensive spectral broadening bridges the two narrowband gain media in the two arms of the same cavity, leading to a broadband mode-locking not attainable with either gain medium alone. Two pulses are coupled out of the cavity and each of the output pulses carries a pulse energy of 25.3 nJ at a repetition rate of 100 MHz. The 10-dB bandwidth of 2.1 THz supports a transform limited pulse duration of 322 fs, more than 5 times shorter than what can be achieved with either gain medium alone. Finally, effects of group velocity mismatch, group velocity dispersion, and nonlinear saturation on the performance of Mamyshev mode-locking are numerically discussed in detail.
A compact and robust coherent laser light source that provides spectral coverage from the ultraviolet to infrared is desirable for numerous applications, including heterodyne super resolution imaging[1], broadband infrared microscopy[2], protein stru cture determination[3], and standoff atmospheric trace-gas detection[4]. Addressing these demanding measurement problems, laser frequency combs[5] combine user-defined spectral resolution with sub-femtosecond timing and waveform control to enable new modalities of high-resolution, high-speed, and broadband spectroscopy[6-9]. In this Letter we introduce a scalable source of near-single-cycle, 0.56 MW pulses generated from robust and low-noise erbium fiber (Er:fiber) technology, and we use it to generate a frequency comb that spans six octaves from the ultraviolet (350 nm) to mid-infrared (22500 nm). The high peak power allows us to exploit the second-order nonlinearities in infrared-transparent, nonlinear crystals (LiNbO$_3$, GaSe, and CSP) to provide a robust source of phase-stable infrared ultra-short pulses with simultaneous spectral brightness exceeding that of an infrared synchrotron[10]. Additional cascaded second-order nonlinearities in LiNbO$_3$ lead to comb generation with four octaves of simultaneous coverage (0.350 to 5.6 $mu$m). With a comb-tooth linewidth of 10 kHz at 193 THz, we realize a notable spectral resolving power exceeding 10$^{10}$ across 0.86 PHz of bandwidth. We anticipate that this compact and accessible technology will open new opportunities for multi-band precision spectroscopy, coherent microscopy, ultra-high sensitivity nanoscopy, astronomical spectroscopy, and precision carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable strong field phenomena.
