Local Hamiltonians arise naturally in physical systems. Despite its seemingly `simple local structure, exotic features such as nonlocal correlations and topological orders exhibit in eigenstates of these systems. Previous studies for recovering local Hamiltonians from measurements on an eigenstate $|psirangle$ require information of nonlocal correlation functions. In this work, we develop an algorithm to determine local Hamiltonians from only local measurements on $|psirangle$, by reformulating the task as an unconstrained optimization problem of certain target function of Hamiltonian parameters, with only polynomial number of parameters in terms of system size. We also develop a machine learning-based-method to solve the first-order gradient used in the algorithm. Our method is tested numerically for randomly generated local Hamiltonians and returns promising reconstruction in the desired accuracy. Our result shed light on the fundamental question on how a single eigenstate can encode the full system Hamiltonian, indicating a somewhat surprising answer that only local measurements are enough without additional assumptions, for generic cases.

We show how multi-level BCS Hamiltonians of finite systems in the strong pairing interaction regime can be accurately approximated using multi-dimensional shifted harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians. In the Shifted Harmonic Approximation (SHA), discrete quantum state variables are approximated as continuous ones and algebraic Hamiltonians are replaced by differential operators. Using the SHA, the results of the BCS theory, such as the gap equations, can be easily derived without the BCS approximation. In addition, the SHA preserves the symmetries associated with the BCS Hamiltonians. Lastly, for all interaction strengths, the SHA can be used to identify the most important basis states -- allowing accurate computation of low-lying eigenstates by diagonalizing BCS Hamiltonians in small subspaces of what may otherwise be vastly larger Hilbert spaces.
Out-of-time-ordered correlation functions (OTOCs) play a crucial role in the study of thermalization, entanglement, and quantum chaos, as they quantify the scrambling of quantum information due to complex interactions. As a consequence of their out-o f-time-ordered nature, OTOCs are difficult to measure experimentally. In this Letter we propose an OTOC measurement protocol that does not rely on the reversal of time evolution and is easy to implement in a range of experimental settings. We demonstrate application of our protocol by the characterization of quantum chaos in a periodically driven spin.
Two sources of geometric information are encoded in the galaxy power spectrum: the sound horizon at recombination and the horizon at matter-radiation equality. Analyzing the BOSS DR12 galaxy power spectra using perturbation theory with $Omega_m$ prio rs from Pantheon supernovae but no priors on $Omega_b$, we obtain constraints on $H_0$ from the second scale, finding $H_0 = 65.1^{+3.0}_{-5.4},mathrm{km},mathrm{s}^{-1}mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$; this differs from the best-fit of SH0ES at 95% confidence. Similar results are obtained if $Omega_m$ is constrained from uncalibrated BAO: $H_0 = 65.6^{+3.4}_{-5.5},mathrm{km},mathrm{s}^{-1}mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. Adding the analogous lensing results from Baxter & Sherwin 2020, the posterior shifts to $70.6^{+3.7}_{-5.0},mathrm{km},mathrm{s}^{-1}mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. Using mock data, Fisher analyses, and scale-cuts, we demonstrate that our constraints do not receive significant information from the sound horizon scale. Since many models resolve the $H_0$ controversy by adding new physics to alter the sound horizon, our measurements are a consistency test for standard cosmology before recombination. A simple forecast indicates that such constraints could reach $sigma_{H_0} simeq 1.6,mathrm{km},mathrm{s}^{-1}mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ in the era of Euclid.

Considering stationary states of continuous-variable systems undergoing an open dynamics, we unveil the connection between properties and symmetries of the latter and the dynamical parameters. In particular, we explore the relation between the Lyapun ov equation for dynamical systems and the steady-state solutions of a time-independent Lindblad master equation for bosonic modes. Exploiting bona-fide relations that characterize some genuine quantum properties (entanglement, classicality, and steerability), we obtain conditions on the dynamical parameters for which the system is driven to a steady-state possessing such properties. We also develop a method to capture the symmetries of a steady state based on symmetries of the Lyapunov equation. All the results and examples can be useful for steady-state engineering process.
We show that genuine multiparty quantum correlations can exist on its own, without a supporting background of genuine multiparty classical correlations, even in macroscopic systems. Such possibilities can have important implications in the physics of quantum information and phase transitions.
