The computation of flows with large density contrasts is notoriously difficult. To alleviate the difficulty we consider a discretization of the Navier-Stokes equation that advects mass and momentum in a consistent manner. Incompressible flow with capillary forces is modeled and the discretization is performed on a staggered grid of Marker and Cell type. The Volume-of-Fluid method is used to track the interface and a Height-Function method is used to compute surface tension. The advection of the volume fraction is performed using either the Lagrangian-Explicit / CIAM (Calcul dInterface Affine par Morceaux) method or the Weymouth and Yue (WY) Eulerian-Implicit method. The WY method conserves fluid mass to machine accuracy provided incompressibility is satisfied. To improve the stability of these methods momentum fluxes are advected in a manner consistent with the volume-fraction fluxes, that is a discontinuity of the momentum is advected at the same speed as a discontinuity of the density. To find the density on the staggered cells on which the velocity is centered, an auxiliary reconstruction of the density is performed. The method is tested for a droplet without surface tension in uniform flow, for a droplet suddenly accelerated in a carrying gas at rest at very large density ratio without viscosity or surface tension, for the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, for a 3mm-diameter falling raindrop and for an atomizing flow in air-water conditions.

We present a particle method for estimating the curvature of interfaces in volume-of-fluid simulations of multiphase flows. The method is well suited for under-resolved interfaces, and it is shown to be more accurate than the parabolic fitting that i s employed in such cases. The curvature is computed from the equilibrium positions of particles constrained to circular arcs and attracted to the interface. The proposed particle method is combined with the method of height functions at higher resolutions, and it is shown to outperform the current combinations of height functions and parabolic fitting. The algorithm is conceptually simple and straightforward to implement on new and existing software frameworks for multiphase flow simulations thus enhancing their capabilities in challenging flow problems. We evaluate the proposed hybrid method on a number of two- and three-dimensional benchmark flow problems and illustrate its capabilities on simulations of flows involving bubble coalescence and turbulent multiphase flows.
In this paper, we develop a simplified hybrid weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) method combined with the modified ghost fluid method (MGFM) [28] to simulate the compressible two-medium flow problems. The MGFM can turn the two-medium flow pr oblems into two single-medium cases by defining the ghost fluids status in terms of the predicted the interface status, which makes the material interface invisible. For the single medium flow case, we adapt between the linear upwind scheme and the WENO scheme automatically by identifying the regions of the extreme points for the reconstruction polynomial as same as the hybrid WENO scheme [50]. Instead of calculating their exact locations, we only need to know the regions of the extreme points based on the zero point existence theorem, which is simpler for implementation and saves computation time. Meanwhile, it still keeps the robustness and has high efficiency. Extensive numerical results for both one and two dimensional two-medium flow problems are performed to demonstrate the good performances of the proposed method.
The discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) is a new finite volume (FV) scheme for continuum and rarefied flows which combines the benefits of both Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and unified gas kinetic scheme (UGKS). By reconstruction of gas dis tribution function using particle velocity characteristic line, flux contains more detailed information of fluid flow and more concrete physical nature. In this work, a simplified DUGKS is proposed with reconstruction stage on a whole time step instead of half time step in original DUGKS. Using temporal/spatial integral Boltzmann Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) equation, the transformed distribution function with inclusion of collision effect is constructed. The macro and mesoscopic fluxes of the cell on next time step is predicted by reconstruction of transformed distribution function at interfaces along particle velocity characteristic lines. According to the conservation law, the macroscopic variables of the cell on next time step can be updated through its macroscopic flux. Equilibrium distribution function on next time step can also be updated. Gas distribution function is updated by FV scheme through its predicted mesoscopic flux in a time step. Compared with the original DUGKS, the computational process of the proposed method is more concise because of the omission of half time step flux calculation. Numerical time step is only limited by the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition and relatively good stability has been preserved. Several test cases, including the Couette flow, lid-driven cavity flow, laminar flows over a flat plate, a circular cylinder, and an airfoil, as well as micro cavity flow cases are conducted to validate present scheme. The numerical simulation results agree well with the references results.

In this paper, we present a class of finite volume schemes for incompressible flow problems. The unknowns are collocated at the center of the control volumes, and the stability of the schemes is obtained by adding to the mass balance stabilization te rms involving the pressure jumps across the edges of the mesh.
We present a Fourier Continuation-based parallel pseudospectral method for incompressible fluids in cuboid non-periodic domains. The method produces dispersionless and dissipationless derivatives with fast spectral convergence inside the domain, and with very high order convergence at the boundaries. Incompressibility is imposed by solving a Poisson equation for the pressure. Being Fourier-based, the method allows for fast computation of spectral transforms. It is compatible with uniform grids (although refined or nested meshes can also be implemented), which in turn allows for explicit time integration at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers. Using a new parallel code named SPECTER we illustrate the method with two problems: channel flow, and plane Rayleigh-Benard convection under the Boussinesq approximation. In both cases the method yields results compatible with previous studies using other high-order numerical methods, with mild requirements on the time step for stability.
