Weyl semimetals are characterized by unconventional electromagnetic response. We present analytical expressions for all components of the frequency- and wave-vector-dependent charge-spin linear-response tensor of Weyl fermions. The spin-momentum locking of the Weyl Hamiltonian leads to a coupling between charge and longitudinal spin fluctuations, while transverse spin fluctuations remain decoupled from the charge. A real Weyl semimetal with multiple Weyl nodes can show this charge-spin coupling in equilibrium if its crystal symmetry is sufficiently low. All Weyl semimetals are expected to show this coupling if they are driven into a non-equilibrium stationary state with different occupations of Weyl nodes, for example by exploiting the chiral anomaly. Based on the response tensor, we investigate the low-energy collective excitations of interacting Weyl fermions. For a local Hubbard interaction, the charge-spin coupling leads to a dramatic change of the zero-sound dispersion: its velocity becomes independent of the interaction strength and the chemical potential and is given solely by the Fermi velocity. In the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions, the coupling transforms the plasmon modes into spin plasmons. For real Weyl semimetals with multiple Weyl nodes, the collective modes are strongly affected by the presence of parallel static electric and magnetic fields, due to the chiral anomaly. In particular, the zero-sound frequency at fixed momentum and the spin content of the spin plasmons go through cusp singularities as the chemical potential of one of the Weyl cones is tuned through the Weyl node. We discuss possible experiments that could provide smoking-gun evidence for Weyl physics.

The study of charge-density wave (CDW) distortions in Weyl semimetals has recently returned to the forefront, inspired by experimental interest in materials such as (TaSe4)2I. However, the interplay between collective phonon excitations and charge tr ansport in Weyl-CDW systems has not been systematically studied. In this paper, we examine the longitudinal electromagnetic response due to collective modes in a Weyl semimetal gapped by a quasi one-dimensional charge-density wave order, using both continuum and lattice regularized models. We systematically compute the contributions of the collective modes to the linear and nonlinear optical conductivity of our models, both with and without tilting of the Weyl cones. We discover that, unlike in a single-band CDW, the gapless CDW collective mode does not contribute to the conductivity unless the Weyl cones are tilted. Going further, we show that the lowest nontrivial collective mode contribution to charge transport with untilted Weyl cones comes in the third-order conductivity, and is mediated by the gapped amplitude mode. We show that this leads to a sharply peaked third harmonic response at frequencies below the single-particle energy gap. We discuss the implications of our findings for transport experiments in Weyl-CDW systems.
Weyl semimetals exhibit exotic Fermi-arc surface states, which strongly affect their electromagnetic properties. We derive analytical expressions for all components of the composite density-spin response tensor for the surfaces states of a Weyl-semim etal model obtained by closing the band gap in a topological insulating state and introducing a time-reversal-symmetry-breaking term. Based on the results, we discuss the electromagnetic susceptibilities, the current response, and other physical effects arising from the density-spin response. We find a magnetoelectric effect caused solely by the Fermi arcs. We also discuss the effect of electron-electron interactions within the random phase approximation and investigate the dispersion of surface plasmons formed by Fermi-arc states. Our work is useful for understanding the electromagnetic and optical properties of the Fermi arcs.
We investigate collective modes in three dimensional (3D) gapless multi-Weyl semimetals with anisotropic energy band dispersions (i.e., $Esim sqrt{ k_{parallel}^{2J} + k_z^2}$, where $k_{parallel}$ and $k_z$ are wave vectors and $J$ is a positive int eger). For comparison, we also consider the gapless semimetals with the isotropic band dispersions (i.e., $Esim k^J$). We calculate analytically long-wavelength plasma frequencies incorporating interband transitions and chiral properties of carriers. For both the isotropic and anisotropic cases, we find that interband transitions and chirality lead to the depolarization shift of plasma frequencies. For the isotropic parabolic band dispersion (i.e., $N=2$, $Esim k^2$), the long-wavelength plasma frequencies lie outside the single particle excitation regions for all carrier densities, and thus the plasmons do not decay via Landau damping. For the higher-order band dispersions ($N ge 3$) the long-wavelength plasmons experience damping below a critical density. For systems with the anisotropic dispersion the density dependence of the long-wavelength plasma frequency along the direction of non-linear dispersion behaves like that of the isotropic linear band model ($N=1$), while along the direction of linear dispersion it behaves like that of the isotropic non-linear model ($N ge 2$). Plasmons along both directions remain undamped over a broad range of densities due to the chirality induced depolarization shift. Our results provide a comprehensive picture of how band dispersion and chirality affect plasmon behaviors in 3D gapless chiral systems with the arbitrary band dispersion.
Theory of light absorption and circular photocurrent in Weyl semimetals is developed for arbitrary large light intensities with account for both elastic and inelastic relaxation processes of Weyl fermions. The direct optical transition rate is shown to saturate at large intensity, and the saturation behaviour depends on the light polarization and on the ratio of the elastic and inelastic relaxation times. The linear-circular dichroism in absorption is shown to exceed 10~% at intermediate light wave amplitudes and fast energy relaxation. At large intensity $I$, the light absorption coefficient drops as $1/sqrt{I}$, and the circular photogalvanic current increases as $sqrt{I}$.
Spin-orbit (SO) fields in a spin-polarized electron gas are studied by angle-resolved inelastic light scattering on a CdMnTe quantum well. We demonstrate a striking organization and enhancement of SO fields acting on the collective spin excitation (s pin-flip wave). While individual electronic SO fields have a broadly distributed momentum dependence, giving rise to Dyakonov-Perel dephasing, the collective spin dynamics is governed by a single collective SO field which is drastically enhanced due to many-body effects. The enhancement factor is experimentally determined. These results provide a powerful indication that these constructive phenomena are universal to collective spin excitations of conducting systems.
