We prove the existence of a periodic traveling wave of extreme form of the Whitham equation that has a convex profile between consecutive stagnation points, at which it is known to feature a cusp of exactly $C^{1/2}$ regularity. The convexity of Whithams highest cusped wave had been conjectured by Ehrnstrom and Wahlen.

We study the critical points of the renormalized volume for acylindrical geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds that include rank-1 cusps, and show that the renormalized volume is locally convex around these critical points. We give a modified d efinition of the renormalized volume that is additive under gluing, and study some local properties.

We consider the two-dimensional quasilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities. We introduce a new class of null forms and prove uniform boundedness of the highest order norm of the solution for all time. This class of null forms include se veral prototypical strong null conditions as special cases. To handle the critical decay near the light cone we inflate the nonlinearity through a new normal form type transformation which is based on a deep cancelation between the tangential and normal derivatives with respect to the light cone. Our proof does not employ the Lorentz boost and can be generalized to systems with multiple speeds.

This paper is concerned with the detailed behaviour of roll-waves undergoing a low-frequency perturbation. We rst derive the so-called Whithams averaged modulation equations and relate the well-posedness of this set of equations to the spectral stabi lity problem in the small Floquet-number limit. We then fully validate such a system and in particular, we are able to construct solutions to the shallow water equations in the neighbourhood of modulated roll-waves proles that exist for asymptotically large time.
The Neumann--Poincare operator defined on a smooth surface has a sequence of eigenvalues converging to zero, and the single layer potentials of the corresponding eigenfunctions, called plasmons, decay to zero, i.e., are localized on the surface, as t he index of the sequence $j$ tends to infinity. We investigate quantitatively the surface localization of the plasmons in three dimensions. The results are threefold. We first prove that on smooth bounded domains of general shape the sequence of plasmons converges to zero off the boundary surface almost surely at the rate of $j^{-1/2}$. We then prove that if the domain is strictly convex, then the convergence rate becomes $j^{-infty}$, namely, it is faster than $j^{-N}$ for any integer $N$. As a consequence, we prove that cloaking by anomalous localized resonance does not occur on three-dimensional strictly convex smooth domains. We then look into the surface localization of the plasmons on the Clifford torus by numerical computations. The Clifford torus is taken as an example of non-convex surfaces. The computational results show that the torus exhibits the spectral property completely different from strictly convex domains. In particular, they suggest that there is a subsequence of plasmons on the torus which has much slower decay than other entries of the sequence.
We obtain approximate convexity principles for solutions to some classes of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations in convex domains involving approximately concave nonlinearities. Furthermore, we provide some applications to some meaningful special cases.
