In this article we are interested in morphisms without slope for mixed Hodge modules. We first show the commutativity of iterated nearby cycles and vanishing cycles applied to a mixed Hodge module in the case of a morphism without slope. Then we define the notion strictly without slope for a mixed Hodge module and we show the preservation of this condition under the direct image by a proper morphism. As an application we prove the compatibility of the Hodge filtration and Kashiwara-Malgrange filtrations for some pure Hodge modules with support an hypersurface with quasi-ordinary singularities.

We show that the cobordism class of a polarization of Hodge module defines a natural transformation from the Grothendieck group of Hodge modules to the cobordism group of self-dual bounded complexes with real coefficients and constructible cohomology sheaves in a compatible way with pushforward by proper morphisms. This implies a new proof of the well-definedness of the natural transformation from the Grothendieck group of varieties over a given variety to the above cobordism group (with real coefficients). As a corollary, we get a slight extension of a conjecture of Brasselet, Schurmann and Yokura, showing that in the $bf Q$-homologically isolated singularity case, the homology $L$-class which is the specialization of the Hirzebruch class coincides with the intersection complex $L$-class defined by Goresky, MacPherson, and others if and only if the sum of the reduced Euler-Hodge signatures of the stalks of the shifted intersection complex vanishes. Here Hodge signature uses a polarization of Hodge structure, and it does not seem easy to define it by a purely topological method.
We calculate the E-polynomials of certain twisted GL(n,C)-character varieties M_n of Riemann surfaces by counting points over finite fields using the character table of the finite group of Lie-type GL(n,F_q) and a theorem proved in the appendix by N. Katz. We deduce from this calculation several geometric results, for example, the value of the topological Euler characteristic of the associated PGL(n,C)-character variety. The calculation also leads to several conjectures about the cohomology of M_n: an explicit conjecture for its mixed Hodge polynomial; a conjectured curious Hard Lefschetz theorem and a conjecture relating the pure part to absolutely indecomposable representations of a certain quiver. We prove these conjectures for n = 2.

For a smooth projective variety $X$ of dimension $2n-1$, Zhao defined topological Abel-Jacobi map, which sends vanishing cycles on a smooth hyperplane section $Y$ of $X$ to the middle dimensional primitive intermediate Jacobian of $X$. When the vanis hing cycles are algebraic, it agrees with Griffiths Abel-Jacobi map. On the other hand, Schnell defined a topological Abel-Jacobi map using the $mathbb R$-splitting property of the mixed Hodge structure on $H^{2n-1}(Xsetminus Y)$. We show that the two definitions coincide, which answers a question of Schnell.

Hodge classes on the moduli space of admissible covers with monodromy group G are associated to irreducible representations of G. We evaluate all linear Hodge integrals over moduli spaces of admissible covers with abelian monodromy in terms of multip lication in an associated wreath group algebra. In case G is cyclic and the representation is faithful, the evaluation is in terms of double Hurwitz numbers. In case G is trivial, the formula specializes to the well-known result of Ekedahl-Lando-Shapiro-Vainshtein for linear Hodge integrals over the moduli space of curves in terms of single Hurwitz numbers.

We show the conjecture in characteristic $p>0$ if $n=p$ assuming in addition that $X$ is ordinary (in the sense of Bloch-Kato).
