We investigate the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the optical response of materials. In particular, we study the effects of the commutator between the spin-orbit coupling part of the potential and the position operator on the optical matrix elements. Using a formalism that separates a fullyrelativistic Kleinman-Bylander pseudopotential into the scalar-relativistic and spin-orbit-coupling parts, we calculate the contribution of the commutator arising from spin-orbit coupling to the squared optical matrix elements of isolated atoms, monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, and topological insulators. In the case of isolated atoms from H ($Z = 1$) to Bi ($Z = 83$), the contribution of spin-orbit coupling to the squared matrix elements can be as large as 14 %. On the other hand, in the cases of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides and topological insulators, we find that this contribution is less than 1 % and that it is sufficient to calculate the optical matrix elements and subsequent physical quantities without considering the commutator arising from spin-orbit coupling.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is essential in understanding the properties of 5d transition metal compounds, whose SOC value is large and almost comparable to other key parameters. Over the past few years, there have been numerous studies on the SOC-driv en effects of the electronic bands, magnetism, and spin-orbit entanglement for those materials with a large SOC. However, it is less studied and remains an unsolved problem in how the SOC affects the lattice dynamics. We, therefore, measured the phonon spectra of 5d pyrochlore Cd2Os2O7 over the full Brillouin zone to address the question by using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). Our main finding is a visible mode-dependence in the phonon spectra, measured across the metal-insulator transition at 227 K. We examined the SOC strength dependence of the lattice dynamics and its spin-phonon (SP) coupling, with first-principle calculations. Our experimental data taken at 100 K are in good agreement with the theoretical results obtained with the optimized U = 2.0 eV with SOC. By scaling the SOC strength and the U value in the DFT calculations, we demonstrate that SOC is more relevant than U to explaining the observed mode-dependent phonon energy shifts with temperature. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the phonon energy can be effectively described by scaling SOC. Our work provides clear evidence of SOC producing a non-negligible and essential effect on the lattice dynamics of Cd2Os2O7 and its SP coupling.
For the 3d ferromagnets iron, cobalt and nickel we compute the spin-dependent inelastic electronic lifetimes due to carrier-carrier Coulomb interaction including spin-orbit coupling. We find that the spin-dependent density-of-states at the Fermi ener gy does not, in general, determine the spin dependence of the lifetimes because of the effective spin-flip transitions allowed by the spin mixing. The majority and minority electron lifetimes computed including spin-orbit coupling for these three 3-d ferromagnets do not differ by more than a factor of 2, and agree with experimental results.

This paper examines the properties of the self-energy operator in lattice-matched semiconductor heterostructures, focusing on nonanalytic behavior at small values of the crystal momentum, which gives rise to long-range Coulomb potentials. A nonlinear response theory is developed for nonlocal spin-dependent perturbing potentials. The ionic pseudopotential of the heterostructure is treated as a perturbation of a bulk reference crystal, and the self-energy is derived to second order in the perturbation. If spin-orbit coupling is neglected outside the atomic cores, the problem can be analyzed as if the perturbation were a local spin scalar, since the nonlocal spin-dependent part of the pseudopotential merely renormalizes the results obtained from a local perturbation. The spin-dependent terms in the self-energy therefore fall into two classes: short-range potentials that are analytic in momentum space, and long-range nonanalytic terms that arise from the screened Coulomb potential multiplied by a spin-dependent vertex function. For an insulator at zero temperature, it is shown that the electronic charge induced by a given perturbation is exactly linearly proportional to the charge of the perturbing potential. These results are used in a subsequent paper to develop a first-principles effective-mass theory with generalized Rashba spin-orbit coupling.

We investigate the superfluidity of attractive Fermi gas in a square optical lattice with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We show that the system displays a variety of new filling-dependent features. At half filling, a quantum phase transition from a semi metal to a superfluid is found for large SOC. Close to half filling where the emerging Dirac cones governs the behaviors of the system, SOC tends to suppress the BCS superfluidity. Conversely, SOC can significantly enhance both the pairing gap and condensate fraction and lead to a new BCS-BEC crossover for small fillings. Moreover, we demonstrate that the superfluid fraction also exhibits many interesting phenomena compared with the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas without lattice.
The electronic band structure of graphene in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and transverse electric field is investigated from first principles using the linearized augmented plane-wave method. The spin-orbit coupling opens a gap at the $K(K)$-p oint of the magnitude of 24 $mu$eV (0.28 K). This intrinsic splitting comes 96% from the usually neglected $d$ and higher orbitals. The electric field induces an additional (extrinsic) Bychkov-Rashba-type splitting of 10 $mu$eV (0.11 K) per V/nm, coming from the $sigma$-$pi$ mixing. A mini-ripple configuration with every other atom is shifted out of the sheet by less than 1% differs little from the intrinsic case.
