Quantum memories with high efficiency and fidelity are essential for long-distance quantum communication and information processing. Techniques have been developed for quantum memories based on atomic ensembles. The atomic memories relying on the atom-light resonant interaction usually suffer from the limitations of narrow bandwidth. The far-off-resonant Raman process has been considered a potential candidate for use in atomic memories with large bandwidths and high speeds. However, to date, the low memory efficiency remains an unsolved bottleneck. Here, we demonstrate a high-performance atomic Raman memory in Rb87 vapour with the development of an optimal control technique. A memory efficiency of 82.6% for 10-ns optical pulses is achieved and is the highest realized to date in atomic Raman memories. In particular, an unconditional fidelity of up to 98.0%, significantly exceeding the no-cloning limit, is obtained with the tomography reconstruction for a single-photon level coherent input. Our work marks an important advance of atomic Raman memory towards practical applications in quantum information processing.

A number of techniques exist to use an ensemble of atoms as a quantum memory for light. Many of these propose to use backward retrieval as a way to improve the storage and recall efficiency. We report on a demonstration of an off-resonant Raman memor y that uses backward retrieval to achieve an efficiency of $65pm6%$ at a storage time of one pulse duration. The memory has a characteristic decay time of 60 $mu$s, corresponding to a delay-bandwidth product of $160$.

Successful implementation of a fault-tolerant quantum computation on a system of qubits places severe demands on the hardware used to control the many-qubit state. It is known that an accuracy threshold $P_{a}$ exists for any quantum gate that is to be used in such a computation. Specifically, the error probability $P_{e}$ for such a gate must fall below the accuracy threshold: $P_{e} < P_{a}$. Estimates of $P_{a}$ vary widely, though $P_{a}sim 10^{-4}$ has emerged as a challenging target for hardware designers. In this paper we present a theoretical framework based on neighboring optimal control that takes as input a good quantum gate and returns a new gate with better performance. We illustrate this approach by applying it to all gates in a universal set of quantum gates produced using non-adiabatic rapid passage that has appeared in the literature. Performance improvements are substantial, both for ideal and non-ideal controls. Under suitable conditions detailed below, all gate error probabilities fall well below the target threshold of $10^{-4}$.
We propose a new quantum numerical scheme to control the dynamics of a quantum walker in a two dimensional space-time grid. More specifically, we show how, introducing a quantum memory for each of the spatial grid, this result can be achieved simply by acting on the initial state of the whole system, and therefore can be exactly controlled once for all. As example we prove analytically how to encode in the initial state any arbitrary walkers mean trajectory and variance. This brings significantly closer the possibility of implementing dynamically interesting physics models on medium term quantum devices, and introduces a new direction in simulating aspects of quantum field theories (QFTs), notably on curved manifold.

In Ref. [Katz et al., arXiv:2007.08770 (2020)], we present a mechanism and optimal procedures for mapping the quantum state of photons onto an optically inaccessible macroscopic state of noble-gas spins, which functions as a quantum memory. Here we i ntroduce and analyze a detailed model of the memory operation. We derive the equations of motion for storage and retrieval of non-classical light and design optimal control strategies. The detailed model accounts for quantum noise and for thermal atomic motion, including the effects of optical mode structure and imperfect anti-relaxation wall coating. We conclude with proposals of practical experimental configurations of the memory, with lifetimes ranging from seconds to hours.

We present an approach to single-shot high-fidelity preparation of an $n$-qubit state based on neighboring optimal control theory. This represents a new application of the neighboring optimal control formalism which was originally developed to produc e single-shot high-fidelity quantum gates. To illustrate the approach, and to provide a proof-of-principle, we use it to prepare the two qubit Bell state $|beta_{01}rangle = (1/sqrt{2})left[, |01rangle + |10rangle,right]$ with an error probability $epsilonsim 10^{-6}$ ($10^{-5}$) for ideal (non-ideal) control. Using standard methods in the literature, these high-fidelity Bell states can be leveraged to fault-tolerantly prepare the logical state $|overline{beta}_{01}rangle$.
