Understanding the interplay between ordered structures and substrate curvature is an interesting problem with versatile applications, including functionalization of charged supramolecular surfaces and modern microfluidic technologies. In this work, we investigate the two-dimensional packing structures of charged particles confined on a pinched sphere. By continuously pinching the sphere, we observe cleavage of elongated scars into pleats, proliferation of disclinations, and subsequently, emergence of a depletion zone at the negatively curved waist that is completely void of particles. We systematically study the geometrics and energetics of the depletion zone, and reveal its physical origin as a finite size effect, due to the interplay between Coulomb repulsion and concave geometry of pinched sphere. These results further our understanding of crystallography on curved surfaces, and have implications in design and manipulation of charged, deformable interfaces in various applications.

How does pore liquid reconfigure within shear bands in wet granular media? Conventional wisdom predicts that liquid is drawn into dilating granular media. We, however, find a depletion of liquid in shear bands despite increased porosity due to dilata ncy. This apparent paradox is resolved by a microscale model for liquid transport at low liquid contents induced by rupture and reconfiguration of individual liquid bridges. Measured liquid content profiles show macroscopic depletion bands similar to results of numerical simulations. We derive a modified diffusion description for rupture-induced liquid migration.
The influence of quadrupolar interactions on the structure of small clusters is investigated by adding a point quadrupole of variable strength to the Lennard-Jones potential. Competition arises between sheet-like arrangements of the particles, favour ed by the quadrupoles, and compact structures, favoured by the isotropic Lennard-Jones attraction. Putative global potential energy minima are obtained for clusters of up to 25 particles using the basin-hopping algorithm. A number of structural motifs and growth sequences emerge, including star-like structures, tubes, shells and sheets. The results are discussed in the context of colloidal self-assembly.

The interfacial free energy is a central quantity in crystallization from the meta-stable melt. In suspensions of charged colloidal spheres, nucleation and growth kinetics can be accurately measured from optical experiments. In previous work, from th is data effective non-equilibrium values for the interfacial free energy between the emerging bcc-nuclei and the adjacent melt in dependence on the chemical potential difference between melt phase and crystal phase were derived using classical nucleation theory. A strictly linear increase of the interfacial free energy was observed as a function of increased meta-stability. Here, we further analyze this data for five aqueous suspensions of charged spheres and one binary mixture. We utilize a simple extrapolation scheme and interpret our findings in view of Turnbulls empirical rule. Our first estimates for the reduced interfacial free energy, $sigma_{0,bcc}$, between coexisting equilibrium uid and bcc-crystal phases are on the order of a few $k_BT$. Their values are not correlated to any of the electrostatic interaction parameters but rather show a systematic decrease with increasing size polydispersity and a lower value for the mixture as compared to the pure components. At the same time, $sigma_0$ also shows an approximately linear correlation to the entropy of freezing. The equilibrium interfacial free energy of strictly monodisperse charged spheres may therefore be still greater.

Magnetization measurements and time-of-flight neutron powder-diffraction studies on the high-temperature (300--980 K) magnetism and crystal structure (321--1200 K) of a pulverized YCrO$_3$ single crystal have been performed. Temperature-dependent inv erse magnetic susceptibility coincides with a piecewise linear function with five regimes, with which we fit a Curie-Weiss law and calculate the frustration factor $f$. The fit results indicate a formation of magnetic polarons between 300 and 540 K and a very strong magnetic frustration. By including one factor $eta$ that represents the degree of spin interactions into the Brillouin function, we can fit well the applied-magnetic-field dependence of magnetization. No structural phase transition was observed from 321 to 1200 K. The average thermal expansions of lattice configurations (emph{a}, emph{b}, emph{c}, and emph{V}) obey well the Gr$ddot{textrm{u}}$neisen approximations with an anomaly appearing around 900 K, implying an isosymmetric structural phase transition, and display an anisotropic character along the crystallographic emph{a}, emph{b}, and emph{c} axes with the incompressibility $K^a_0 > K^c_0 > K^b_0$. It is interesting to find that at 321 K, the local distortion size $Delta$(O2) $approx$ 1.96$Delta$(O1) $approx$ 4.32$Delta$(Y) $approx$ 293.89$Delta$(Cr). Based on the refined Y-O and Cr-O bond lengths, we deduce the local distortion environments and modes of Y, Cr, O1, and O2 ions. Especially, the Y and O2 ions display obvious atomic displacement and charge subduction, which may shed light on the dielectric property of the YCrO$_3$ compound. Additionally, by comparing Kramers Mn$^{3+}$ with non-Kramers Cr$^{3+}$ ions, it is noted that being a Kramers or non-Kramers ion can strongly affect the local distortion size, whereas, it may not be able to change the detailed distortion mode.
We study by simulation and theory how the addition of insulating spherical particles affects the conductivity of fluids of conducting rods, modeled by spherocylinders. The electrical connections are implemented as tunneling processes, leading to a mo re detailed and realistic description than a discontinuous percolation approach. We find that the spheres enhance the tunneling conductivity for a given concentration of rods and that the enhancement increases with rod concentration into the regime where the conducting network is well established. By reformulating the network of rods using a critical path analysis, we quantify the effect of depletion-induced attraction between the rods due to the spheres. Furthermore, we show that our conductivity data are quantitatively reproduced by an effective medium approximation, which explicitly relates the system tunneling conductance to the structure of the rod-sphere fluid.
